Annual debate to discuss<br />
water as a global issue<br />
Always stimulating, the annual Kim Hill<br />
debate at Lincoln University is scheduled for<br />
this Thursday evening. The topic – ‘Water, a<br />
global issue affecting New Zealand’.<br />
This years panelists are Bryan Jenkins,<br />
Ken Hughey, Peter Townsend and Brent<br />
Clothier.<br />
Kim Hill will chair the Thursday evening panel.<br />
Bryan Jenkins<br />
Dr Jenkins is Professor, Strategic Water<br />
Management at the Waterways Centre for<br />
Freshwater Management, a joint centre<br />
of the University of Canterbury and<br />
Lincoln University. The centre provides<br />
undergraduate and postgraduate courses<br />
in water resources<br />
management and coordinates<br />
research<br />
across the universities<br />
in water resource issues.<br />
Prior to this<br />
Dr Jenkins was<br />
chief executive<br />
of Environment<br />
Canterbury for more<br />
than seven years.<br />
He was responsible<br />
for the introduction<br />
of collaborative<br />
governance concepts<br />
to the regional<br />
council including the<br />
development of the<br />
Canterbury Water<br />
Management Strategy.<br />

Canterbury, he was<br />

He has a PhD in environmental planning<br />
from Stanford University, a masters and first<br />
class honours degrees in civil engineering<br />
from Adelaide University and a master of<br />
administration from Monash University.<br />
Ken Hughey<br />
Dr Ken Hughey is Professor of<br />
Environmental Management at Lincoln<br />
University and Chief Science Advisor<br />
for DOC, Wellington. He is on the board<br />
of the Waihora Ellesmere Trust and is<br />
a foundation member of the Hurunui<br />
Waiau Water Zone Committee. Dr Hughey<br />
specialises in state of the environment<br />
reporting, river flow needs for birds,<br />
collaborative approaches to water resource<br />
management and sustainable tourism.<br />
Peter Townsend<br />
Peter Townsend is the chief executive of<br />
the Canterbury Employers' Chamber of<br />
Commerce and has held that position since<br />
1996.<br />

Brent Clothier<br />
Brent Clothier is group leader of Systems<br />
Modelling within Plant & Food Research<br />
and is based in Palmerston North. Mr<br />
Clothier is also an adjunct professor in<br />
the School of Earth & Environment of the<br />
University of Western Australia, an adjunct<br />
professor in the New Zealand Life Cycle<br />
Management Centre of Massey University<br />
and an adjunct professor in the School of<br />
Agriculture & the Environment at Lincoln<br />
University.<br />
Dr Clothier has a BSc (Hons) from<br />
Canterbury University, and a PhD and DSc<br />
from Massey University. He is a Fellow of<br />
the Royal Society of New Zealand, and the<br />
Zealand Soil Science Society and a Fellow<br />
of three foreign science academies: the Soil<br />
Science Society of America, the American<br />
Agronomy Society, and the American<br />
Geophysical Union.<br />
He has published over 280 scientific<br />
papers on water-related topics and is<br />
editor-in-chief of the international journal<br />
Agricultural Water Management.<br />
He has been, or is involved in waterrelated<br />
aid and development projects in the<br />
Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Middle East<br />
and Africa.<br />
