Digital technologies, connected<br />

enterprises are focus of industry forum<br />

Digitally enabled technologies,<br />

approaches, and business processes are<br />

disrupting the way industry, infrastructure,<br />

and municipalities operate and<br />

serve their customers. These are topics of<br />

focus at the 22nd annual ARC Industry<br />

Forum in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 12-15. This<br />

digital transformation impacts every<br />

aspect of business, industry, and infrastructure,<br />

organizers said.<br />

“We’re seeing signs of positive disruption<br />

via digital transformation everywhere<br />

we look,” said Andy Chatha,<br />

president and founder of ARC Advisory<br />

Group. “Today’s smart, connected,<br />

information-driven industrial enterprises<br />

are making better use of their assets<br />

and data to improve business and regulatory<br />

performance. We’re seeing a similar<br />

transformation across infrastructure and<br />

within municipalities.”<br />

Chatha said, “Without robust cybersecurity,<br />

connected enterprises are more<br />

vulnerable to hackers and other cybercriminals.<br />

Also, today’s shortage of the<br />

skilled knowledge workers needed for successful<br />

digital transformation will become<br />

an increasing constraint.” ARC has helped<br />

organize an end user-driven Digital Transformation<br />

Council, which will convene for<br />

the first time at this year’s forum.<br />

Experts are asked to explore these<br />

and related topics. Keynote speakers will<br />

include Kenny Warren, vice president of<br />

engineering at ExxonMobil Research &<br />

<strong>Engineering</strong>, who will speak on the business<br />

goals of the company’s Open Process<br />

Automation initiative; and Jason Handley,<br />

director of smart grid emerging technology<br />

and operations at Duke Energy, who<br />

will speak on new technologies that are<br />

impacting the emerging smart grid.<br />

Advantages of a Mobile App Based<br />

HART Communicator<br />

The HART Communicator has been around for many years, but until recently it has not<br />

been a true “hand held” HART communicator. Existing HART Communicators are large,<br />

power hungry, and expensive. The mobile device App revolution solves those problems.<br />

Now is a good time to see if a mobile App based HART Communicator is right for you.<br />

The paper describes the advantages of a mobile App based HART Communicator over traditional HART Communicators.<br />

For example, a big advantage of a mobile App solution is that you can use the mobile device you already own. Since mobile<br />

hardware is upgraded frequently, you are continuously getting more features and more processing power for very little cost.<br />

The paper also examines key features you should look for when selecting a mobile App based HART Communicator.<br />

For example, a key feature is that it must be “DD based”. This means the mobile App uses the HART Device’s DD binary file<br />

to present device menus, variables, and methods. Unless you have full DD access<br />

to the HART device, you may be stuck in the field without the ability to change<br />

a necessary parameter or perform a calibration on the HART device.<br />
