APPROVED OVER 93% SUCCESS RATE From the Archives Remembering Highwood’s military history Submitted by the Highwood Historical Society The USO building in Highwood, previously located by the Highwood Fire Station and Recreation Center on Green Bay Road, was a major site for the troops from Fort Sheridan and Great Lakes to congregate, enjoy the company of local residents and relax outside of their military duties. Food, music and dancing entertained and helped the service members avoid getting homesick. In some cases it also initiated friendships that led to future relationships and even marriage. The Highwood Historical Society celebrated the USO and the homecoming of two such individuals in 1995. This event was initiated by Gladys and Maurice Whitacre, who met at the Highwood USO and wanted to celebrate their 50 years of marriage where they first met. He was a Navy sailor in 1944 and she was a college student. Gladys and Maurice Whitacre shortly after they met in 1944.
