At the bachelor’s degree level, between 2004 and 2014, the share of STEM-related bachelor’s degrees earned by women decreased in all seven discipline areas: engineering; computer science; earth, atmospheric and ocean sciences; physical sciences; mathematics; biological and agricultural sciences; and social sciences and psychology. Graduates of girls’ schools, however, are faring much better than their peers from coeducational institutions. Girls’ school graduates are three times more likely to consider majoring in engineering and six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science and technology. “Not only do our graduates go on to pursue degrees in the STEM fields,” says Head of School Meg Steele, “but they go on to become leaders. We are immensely proud that our graduates are blazing trails in traditionally male-dominated fields.” Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart is Lake County’s only singlegender school. LakeForestLeader.com Private School Guide the lake forest leader | January 25, 2018 | 21 School of St. Mary celebrates Catholic Schools Week Please join us for our Open Houses on Sunday, Jan. 28. Information and student-led tours will be available at both the Primary Grade Center (pre-K – 3rd grades), 900 W. Everett Road, and the Upper Grade Center (4th – 8th grades), 185 E. Illinois Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Both campuses are in Lake Forest. The Open Houses, together with student speakers at Sunday Mass, will kick-off Catholic Schools Week, our annual celebration of what makes education at School of St. Mary outstanding. A whole week of activities are planned to showcase what our students are accomplishing and to celebrate the community we have built to educate tomorrow’s citizens and church leaders. The theme of Catholic Schools Week is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” This theme encompasses the core products and values that can be found in Catholic schools across the country. Not only are we teaching students to become future servant leaders, faith-filled disciples and enriched citizens in our communities, educators are growing with them. In Catholic schools, we are all learners, servants and leaders. These shared qualities are what make Catholic schools work. They are what make Catholic schools succeed. The theme also focuses on key elements of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence and dedication to service. These elements set Catholic schools apart from other educational options. They are why families make sacrifices to provide their children with a Catholic education. Please visit the School of St. Mary on Jan. 28 during the Open Houses and see how our students embrace their faith development, excellent education and dedication to service. Please bring your friends and neighbors, particularly those who may be considering Catholic education for their children.
