Glenview New Church
School provides options to
serve needs of community
The Glenview New
Church School has been
around since 1894, and has
been serving the needs of
Glenview and surrounding
area families ever since.
Centrally located near the
heart of Glenview, the
Christian-based, private
school sits on a quiet, 26
acre campus boasting wide
open fields and wooded areas,
a pond, school garden,
multiple playgrounds, and
is perfectly suited to provide
an exceptional, beyond-the-classroom-walls
learning experience.
In recent years, with
more parents both working,
GNCS has developed
programs to accommodate
every need. The school
prides itself on providing
an excellent, individualized
education, and has
added more programs for
those wishing to enhance
educational opportunities
or extend school days
to fit a work schedule.
GNCS offers programs
from preschool through
grade 7. Last year, the
school added a Turning-3
preschool class, and continues
to offer full or halfday
preschool options.
Kindergarten is full-day,
a rarity in some communities.
The school also offers
a Kindergarten extension
program to complement
District 34’s half-day Kindergarten
programs. The
school provides a free
shuttle from D34 schools
directly to GNCS.
Students have options
for popular after school
enrichment classes such
as gymnastics, baking, science,
crafts and more. Aftercare
can be arranged to
extend the school day even
further.
While serving the needs
of the community by providing
many options at
reasonable tuition rates,
GNCS also focuses on
serving those needs in a
different way. The school
emphasizes going out into
the larger community and
incorporating charity into
students’ learning experience.
Each year students
go on field trips to food
and clothing donation centers
and other charities. In
the process, students learn
to be well-rounded, caring
individuals who build
on kindness and sharing
of their time and talents to
help those around them.
GNCS strives to prepare
students for life and to
make a difference.
Experience emergent curriculum at Bright Horizons
For more than 30 years, Bright
Horizons® has been partnering
with Chicagoland families to
provide engaging, enriching early
education and preschool programs.
Bright Horizons prides
itself on providing high-quality
early childhood education, focusing
on school readiness by
using top of the line educational
resources. Implementing an approach
to educating the child as
a whole, Bright Horizons offers
an emergent curriculum tailored
to the individual child.
The term “emergent curriculum”
is rooted in the work of noted
early childhood theorists like
Dewey, Piaget, and Vygotsky,
and is defined as a process where
teachers plan activities and projects
based on the specific group
of children they are working
with, taking into account their
skills, needs, and interests. In
an emergent curriculum program,
what happens in side by
side classrooms will look different
because of the varying skills,
interests, and needs of the children
within those classrooms. A
teacher takes into account what
she knows about individuals and
the particular group of children
she teaches and plans accordingly.
A successful emergent curriculum
approach means that
teachers thoughtfully plan the
environment, offering visible
choices, based on the children’s
skills and needs. Teachers conduct
observations to help with
planning, Teachers practicing
emergent curriculum utilize reflective
practice, taking time to
reflect and act on their observations
of children.
Teachers still plan according to
age group objectives and appropriate
content including school
readiness skills such as letter and
number concepts. They also follow
state early childhood standards
where available and may
use a system for tracking children’s
progress such as Teaching
Strategies GOLD.
Project work is often another
component of programs that successfully
practice emergent curriculum.
Projects allow children
to study a topic in more depth
over a period of days or weeks
and can involve a small group or
the whole class. Projects in an
emergent curriculum classroom
often focus on answering children’s
questions such as “Where
does water go when you water
plants?” Teachers take note of
children’s questions and where
appropriate, build project work
to help answer those questions.
Emergent curriculum is a
developmentally appropriate
approach to planning for children’s
learning in early childhood
settings. Through this approach,
teachers gain greater
understanding of each child’s
individual needs, allowing for
thoughtful and individualized
programming.
in action, schedule a visit at
Countryside Montessori School:
A place not only to learn but to grow up
Countryside Montessori
School is unique among
the many independent
schools on the North Shore
and has carved out a niche
market for families who
are looking for an educational
experience that
focuses both on academic
rigor, but also on the development
of social-emotional
learning that is the
foundation necessary for
the development of good
character.
In fact, Countryside’s
faculty can often be heard
saying, “We are committed
to more than great students
– we are committed to exceptional
adults.”
Countryside is able to
achieve this goal by creating
classrooms that emulate
real life, giving its students
the opportunities to
make independent choices,
learn from mistakes and
failures, share the responsibility
of class management
with the teachers, and
be peer mentors, teachers
and mediators. Whether
that means helping a friend
in the toddler class put her
socks on after gym or design
a micro-business to
run in the Middle School.
Parents of CMS have
reported that after their
children have started at
CMS, “They are eager and
excited to learn. They have
developed greater selfconfidence.
School has
become a joy for them! In
addition, much progress
has been made in developing
respect, responsibility,
and resourcefulness in
our children; all qualities
that will serve them well
throughout their lives.”
Countryside is more
than a school for students.
It is also a school for parents
who want to consider
carefully the choices they
are making in their daily
lives that will impact the
development of the children’s
character and be a
part of a community with
a shared vision for how
to accomplish the goal of
raising young adults who
are ready to take their
place in the world when
they are 18 years old.
Countryside just celebrated
its 50th year serving
the North Shore community.
Students can begin
as early as 16 months and
continue all the way
through eighth grade. The
school has a remarkable
dedicated faculty with
very little turnover, many
of whom have been at the
school for more than fifteen
years. The teachers
in the school say that they
always have their minds
on the adults each of their
students will become and
what decisions will best
prepare them for their independent
futures.
CMS holds monthly information
sessions. Families
can sign up on their
website or call the school
for a tour. They also have
an extensive portion of
their website dedicated to
interviews with graduates,
parents of graduates, and
objective data on how the
students perform academically
during their time at
CMS and after they graduate
(see Outcomes in the
menu bar). The next Parent
Information Sessions are
at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Welcome to St. Catherine Laboure school
As each new school year
brings new beginnings, we
have been happy to welcome
many new students in
all grades, PK through 8th,
from throughout Glenview
and surrounding towns. St.
Catherine Laboure school
has been sought out due to
our small, family-focused
atmosphere and rigorous
academic programs.
SCL’s exceptional
teachers continue to develop
our academic program,
which includes full
day preschool and full
day Kindergarten. Spanish
classes have been expanded
to include grades PK
through 8th, our science
lab has been updated with
better resources for a more
hands on science education.
Google Classroom
has been incorporated into
technology classes, and we
continue to work with area
high schools to ensure that
our curriculum prepares
our students for success.
This year again saw the
success of our fourth annual
SCL Golf Outing, held at
the Highland Park Country
Club this past June. More
than $48,000 was raised,
all of which directly supported
the school’s Technology
programs, including
the purchase of new
Chrome Books for the Jr.
High students, and new
laptops for the staff.
Lastly, St. Catherine Laboure
Parish was blessed
to install the first shrine to
honor Our Lady of Fatima.
Cardinal Blasé Cupich celebrated
mass with Pastor
Faither Maina and many
faithful to celebrate this
special shrine. It is the first
and only shrine in all of
North America, and we are
so excited to welcome all
The SCL School community
is grateful for a
wonderful 2017 and we
look forward to more great
things ahead in 2018! We
OLPH School transforms the lives of children
When setting foot on the
campus of Our Lady of
Perpetual Help School in
Glenview, students enter
a place unlike any other
— a vibrant 21st century
Catholic school in an
idyllic 8 building campus
our school an extraordinary
a mission of faith, with
families passionate about
engaged in their learning,
and teachers committed
to their practice as caring
professionals.
In every grade, we foster
the growth and development
of the whole person.
Religious education and its
formation of responsible
young adult Catholics is
the foundation of our parish
school. As an academic
institution, OLPH School
is dedicated to designing
an individualized program
of success for each
child. Careful structuring
of classes allows for every
child to be known and
loved, while providing a
broad range of learning
opportunities in academics,
visual and performing
arts, athletics, service, and
leadership.
Additionally, the OLPH
School distinction involves
parents being active
partners in their child’s education.
We do not simply
enroll a student; we enroll
a family. Recognizing parents
as the primary educators
of children, OLPH
qualities are what make Catholic schools
work. They are what make Catholic
on key elements of Catholic education:
faith development, academic excellence
preschool will relocate to The
Village Presbyterian Church in
downtown Northbrook in July.
The move signifies a homecoming,
as NCNS was previously
based at the corner of Shermer
Road and Church Street from
1955 to 1975.
The location offers NCNS
bright, big classrooms and excellent
facilities perfectly suited
to school’s play-based philosophy.
A beautiful back garden,
soon to be equipped with a new
playground, invites children to
explore outside.
NCNS has a strong reputation
for preparing children for
kindergarten and beyond. Each
preschool class is taught by two
highly-experienced co-teachers
using the Creative Curriculum
model. This flexible curriculum
engages students in theme-based
study units while fostering development
across social/emotional,
physical, cognitive, and
language platforms.
A day’s activities include a
range of dramatic play, creative
art, scientific exploration, storytelling
and literature, and outdoor
play. Students engage in a
mix of small- and large-group
activities. Each week, children
spend dedicated time with the
school’s music specialist. Pre-K
classes also include a focus on
math and science in addition to
daily practice of Handwriting
Without Tears.
Beyond the independent
classes for two-, three-, and fouryear
olds, NCNS offers enrichment
programs. Students are
invited to extend the day with
Lunch Bunch classes ranging
from yoga to Spanish to cooking.
Along with their caregivers,
children ages 18 to 23 months
experience their first taste of preschool
in the popular Parent &
Tot program.
In addition to a commitment
to excellent education, Northbrook
Community Nursery
School is known for its inclusive
atmosphere and deep local
ties. The school hosts several
popular family events each year,
bringing parents and children together.
The return to downtown
Northbrook will grant families
easy access to The Village Green
as well as many local events in
which the school participates,
including Northbrook Farmers
Market, Fourth of July Parade,
and Northbrook Days.
“Northbrook Community
Nursery School is a special
place. Our students learn from
an early age the importance of
being a part of a community,
participating in local events and
service,” Board President Kelly
Parikh said. “Many of our parents
attended the school, and are
now enrolling their own children
here. We look forward to many
years at our new location instilling
a love of learning in all our
little ones.”
Lake Forest Academy seeks to develop global minds
LFA students come from
near and far — from Chicago’s
suburbs and across the United
States, to many different countries
around the globe. No matter
where they call home, students
at the Academy are committed
to excellence, possess a curiosity
about the world, and are excited
to learn in a diverse school community.
This year’s student body
includes students from 16 states
and 40 countries and territories.
Students of color comprise 30%
of our community, and international
students make up 26 percent.
The Academy’s focus on globalism
stretches far beyond the
make-up of the student body. The
school places the utmost importance
on helping its students become
better global citizens. Cultivating
a deeper sense of global
awareness and understanding is
rooted throughout the curriculum.
Whether in the classroom,
on service trips, traveling with a
class, or spending a year abroad,
LFA students are encouraged to
widen their horizons both figuratively
and literally.
Head of School, Dr. John
Strudwick, points out, “LFA is
committed to the education of
character, ethics, and a value
system based in community,
empathy, and support. The term
‘Midwestern Heart’ embodies
cooperation, diligence, and an
authentic approach to life. LFA
is also committed to being a
global educational community
that embraces a diverse group of
students and faculty from around
the world, and, through its curricular
and extra-curricular programs,
encourages the development
of a ‘Global Mind.’
The Stuart Center for Global
Leadership, which opened in the
fall of 2016, offers co-curricular
transformative global programs
that inspire members of the LFA
community to apply classroom
concepts to problems in the real
world. The Academy offers ample
opportunities for students to
travel abroad. This year students
have the opportunity to travel to
Eastern Europe, Greece, Taiwan,
Singapore, Guatemala, Nicaragua
and Tanzania, as part of the
Spring Break trip offerings.
Recent graduate, Erin Snoddy
’17, recalls, “I really enjoyed all
of the opportunities to succeed
and try new things. Because of
the immense diversity at LFA, I
have become a lot more culturally
aware and knowledgeable about
the outside world.”
The Gow School approach allows its
students to thrive with personal experience
The Gow School is a collegeprep
boarding and day school
for students, grades 6-12, with
dyslexia and similar languagebased
learning disabilities. Focusing
on small class sizes, 3-7
students per class, and a low 4:1
student to faculty ratio, The Gow
School offers a multi-sensory
approach to teaching that enables
dyslexic students to thrive.
The Gow community has a sense
of belonging, of equality, and of
connection born on common trials
and shared triumph.
Gow has a start fast, finish
strong mentality and students
typically start to see progress
soon after they step foot in our
classrooms. Progress typically
comes quickly, soon after they
invest themselves in the program.
At the School’s core is a
structured program designed to
help students navigate the academic
day and a daily schedule
designed to keep students busy.
Between a packed class schedule,
after-school sports, study
hall and Saturday classes, there
is little unprogrammed time.
The School is settled on a 120
acre campus which gives our students
plenty of room to learn and
play. Boarding school life does
not always allow lots of free
time, but it has plenty of room
for fun. Students are so involved
– playing sports, going on trips,
and hanging out with each other
– that they get the most out of the
rich residential experience.
In July, the School’s co-ed
summer program is five weeks of
learning and fun for ages 8-16!
The Gow School Summer Program
is for students who have
been experiencing academic difficulties,
or have been diagnosed
with dyslexia or specific learning
disabilities. The Summer Program
runs from the end of June
to early August with morning
academics, afternoon fun and
games and weekend adventures!
The Gow School Summer Program
gives students academic
tools and self-confidence they
can take with them wherever
they go; to the classroom and
beyond.
By combining a structured
program and environment with
flexibility, individualization,
and room for fun, Gow provides
a rich school experience that is
precisely what dyslexic students
need to learn and to enjoy learning.
Christian Heritage Academy gives students
strong foundation for success
Are you looking for a
school where your child
can thrive intellectually,
emotionally, and spiritually?
A place where a love
of learning is cultivated
in the rich foundation of
Christ-centered excellence?
Christian Heritage
Academy (CHA) has been
integrating vibrant faith
with academic excellence
since 1984. Located on
a 15-acre campus at 315
Waukegan Road in Northfield,
CHA has served
thousands of families from
northern Chicagoland for
over 30 years, providing
an exemplary Christian
education to students from
preschool to 12th grade.
CHA earns No. 1 ranking
in Illinois. With ACT,
AP and standardized test
scores among the best
in the area’s school systems,
Christian Heritage
Academy’s programs are
synonymous with academic
excellence. In 2018,
CHA earned the ranking
of #1 Best Christian High
School and #8 Best Private
K-12 School in Illinois
by Niche.com, an
independent agency that
ranks schools based on
rigorous analysis of data
from test scores, college
data, and ratings. Students
from recent graduating
classes have been accepted
into top-tier colleges
and universities including
Northwestern University,
University of Illinois (Chicago),
Wheaton College,
and Baylor University.
Nurturing young men
and women in faith, character,
leadership. In an
increasingly competitive
culture, CHA takes a holistic
approach to educating
the child’s mind, body and
heart. Through mentoring
programs for middle and
high school students and
weekly chapels, students
connect biblical truth to
their daily lives and receive
spiritual support. Innovative
programs, such
as the “Winterim” term in
January, allow students to
enjoy special courses and
programs such as a Leadership
Camp at HoneyRock
through Wheaton College,
serving trips to the Dominican
Republic, or internships
at local hospitals. One
parent stated, “My child
has grown in spiritual maturity
and character, but she
has also taken advantage of
the academically rigorous
honors and AP courses and
has had more club leadership
opportunities than she
would have had at a huge
school. She is thriving in
every way and at the same
time building a strong portfolio
for college.”
“Christian Heritage
Academy is unique among
schools in this region, combining
academic excellence
with a Christian worldview,”
CHA President Hutz
Hertzberg said. “Christian
Heritage Academy partners
with parents to develop future
leaders who will take
their faith into the world
and serve their communities
with excellence.”
Visit Christian Heritage
Academy and discover the
difference a Christ-centered
education can make in your
child’s life. We are now accepting
Woodlands Academy
prepares women for
STEM careers
Young women are losing
ground in the STEM
fields. At the bachelor’s
degree level, between
2004 and 2014, the share
of STEM-related bachelor’s
degrees earned by
women decreased in all
seven discipline areas: engineering;
computer science;
earth, atmospheric
and ocean sciences; physical
sciences; mathematics;
biological and agricultural
sciences; and social sciences
and psychology.
Graduates of girls’
schools, however, are faring
much better than their
peers from coeducational
institutions. Girls’ school
graduates are three times
more likely to consider
majoring in engineering
and six times more likely
“Not only do our graduates
go on to pursue degrees
in the STEM fields,”
says Head of School Meg
The Goddard School offers families
different educational opportunities
For nearly 30 years, The Goddard
School has been a trusted
name among parents and families.
Its classrooms are safe,
nurturing environments for children
6 weeks - 6 years, offering
age-appropriate opportunities to
explore and discover. From infants
to toddlers, preschoolers to
kindergarteners, highly trained
teachers lead each child to reach
developmental milestones, preparing
the children for social and
academic success.
At The Goddard School, the
on-site owners, Andrew and
Mary Fratini, work to make sure
every family enjoys a warm,
positive experience. They strive
to provide the best quality program
for each child year-round,
offering full-time and part-time
schedules with open enrollment.
The F.L.EX.® Learning Program
(Fun Learning Experience)
ensures that they meet high standards
specific to early learning,
development and care.
The F.L.EX.® Learning Program
is grounded in research on
how children learn best: children
experience the deepest, most
genuine learning when they are
having fun. It’s designed to help
build each child’s emotional,
academic, social, creative and
physical skills – including 21st
century skills such as communication,
collaboration, creativity
and critical thinking - to provide
a well-rounded experience and
help each one become schoolready,
career-ready and lifeready.
Twenty-first century skills
also tie in directly with STEAM
learning (science, technology,
engineering, arts and mathematics).
Introducing these subjects
early on helps promote children’s
natural curiosity in them,
increasing the chance that children
will pursue STEAM-related
careers later on in life.
“Supporting STEAM learning
at the preschool level involves
identifying activities children
naturally do for opportunities
to further guide them,” Andrew
Fratini said. “When children
solve puzzles or play with
blocks, they create pathways in
their brains that help with more
advanced STEAM skills later
on.” The preschool and pre-kindergarten
classrooms integrate
this play-based learning philosophy
into their lesson plans.
In the preschool classroom,
children use a variety of interesting,
hands-on learning and reading
materials to make play more
complex and challenging. Their
play also becomes more social
and cooperative as they build
their social skills, make friends
and learn to collaborate.
Children continue their journey
of exploration and discovery
in the pre-kindergarten
classroom. Teachers help them
apply their developing literacy
and math skills through fun, purposeful
learning experiences.
Play-based learning is so effective
that the results of a recent
review by the Children’s
Progress Academic Assessment
(CPAA) show that Goddard
School students score 45 percent
higher on mathematics and literacy
assessments compared to
non-Goddard peers. CPAA is an
early childhood assessment system
that assists teachers in making
informed and individualized
instructional decisions.
St. Norbert School celebrates 100 years of Catholic education
Since 1917, St. Norbert School
has honored its mission of serving
God through Learning, Faith
and Service. Academics are our
focus. Our small class sizes are
ideal
for providing meaningful differentiation
in the classroom.
Teachers help each child reach
his or her full potential. State
of the art technology is used in
every classroom to make lessons
dynamic and provide resources
beyond traditional textbooks.
Our accelerated curriculum assures
St. Norbert students are
well prepared for whatever high
school they choose to attend.
While academics are the focus
of the school, faith is the heart.
Catholic values are integrated
into the school day so our students
aren’t just learning their
faith; they’re living it. In addition
to religion classes, students
participate in Mass together every
week. They prepare for the
sacraments and look forward to
religious celebrations including
the annual Christmas program
and May Crowning.
St. Norbert graduates are well
rounded individuals. The school
provides opportunities outside
the classroom that help our students
grow as much as they do
inside the classroom.
Six competitive athletic teams
ensure our students learn the importance
of teamwork and the
value of good sportsmanship.
Our academic teams consistently
shine in Quiz Bowl, math and
STEM competitions. Ongoing
service projects, like our support
of local food pantries, help our
students to appreciate what they
have and share their gifts and talents
with others.
At St. Norbert School, Think
Ahead isn’t just our tagline. It is
the way we live our mission.
We prepare students to be lifelong
learners, rooted in faith and
committed to service. We prepare
them to be successful; not
just in high school, but in life.
Sacred Heart School students thrive under right guidance
The school mission states:
“Sacred Heart School is a faithbased
community of faculty, parents
and staff dedicated to educating
the hearts and minds of
children from preschool through
eighth grade.” Visitors immediately
recognize key elements of
the school’s mission in action.
From the youngest preschooler
to the most mature eighth-grader,
Sacred Heart Vikings display
a strong sense of community,
personal confidence, and a deep
commitment to service in order
to build a better world for tomorrow.
This year, Sacred Heart
School started a program called
Prayer Families. Eleven Prayer
Families, each led by an eighthgrader
A new Parent and Tot class
This free class is offered to parents
the first and third Wednesdays
of each month, from 9:15-10:15
Why choose a Montessori
School for your
child?
Research has shown
that the best predictor
of future success is
confidence along with
a positive sense of self.
Beginning your child’s
education at a Montessori
school during their
most formative, impressionable
years can set
them firmly on that path.
Fundamental to the
Montessori approach
is that children become
independent by developing
their sense of order,
coordination, and
concentration. In doing
so, they also develop
positive character qualities,
self-discipline, the
ability to think independently,
and a life-long
love of learning.
Why choose Ronald
Knox Montessori
School?
In dedicating ourselves
wholly to Maria Montessori’s
philosophy, Ronald
Knox Montessori
School (RKMS) adheres
to the highest standards
of Montessori education.
RKMS is fully accredited,
meeting or exceeding
standards set forth by
the American Montessori
Society (AMS). We have
55 years of educating
and instilling the love of
learning in children ages
6 months – 6 years and
many of our “graduates”
are now sending their
own children to Ronald
Knox!
The child, making
use of all that he finds
around him, shapes himself
for the future.
— Maria Montessori
RKMS offers children
a warm, welcoming environment,
where they
are encouraged to explore
a world of activities
in mixed age classrooms
under the watchful eyes
of nurturing, competent,
and qualified Montessori-trained
and certified
directresses (teachers).
The beautiful classroom
environments are designed,
built, and maintained
for the children,
following the Montessori
philosophy.
Children are introduced
to la
nguage, math, science,
history, geography, art,
and music in a natural,
intuitive, hands-on manner.
They develop life
skills such as creative
problem solving, grace
and courtesy, respect for
themselves, others, and
the world around them.
The directresses are
dedicated to supporting
and guiding the children
in the beginning of their
path of a life-long love
of learning, leading to
fulfilling their highest
potential. RKMS
children are more than
prepared to enter elementary
schools upon
“graduating.”
Our strong and involved
community of
parents, faculty and
administrators ensures
that RKMS continues its
mission successfully and
maintains its level of excellence.
Ronald Knox Montessori
School offers a
Full Day Kindergarten
program, a Full Day Primary
program (3-4 year
olds), a Lunch program,
an Early Bird and Extended
Care program,
Enrichment programs,
and three different Summer
Camps.
The STEAM lab has been up and
running since January 2017. The lab
integrates technology exploration
with academics in a powerful handson,
minds-on learning environment.
Core subject knowledge is reinforced
through applied learning – engaging
and motivating students while improving
academic performance. The most
exciting addition to the lab is the brand
new 3D printer.
Sacred Heart students thrive under
Gow is a college preparatory boarding and day
school, grades 6-12, for students with dyslexia
and related language-based learning disabilities.
Gow provides the right environment and the right
tools for dyslexic students to rethink the learning
process and reinvent themselves.
By combining a structured program and
environment with flexibility, individualization,
and room for fun, Gow provides a rich school
experience. This is precisely what dyslexic
students need to learn.
