Thankfully, Northfield Community Preschool knows the same is not true for Mom and Dad, so it opened its doors Jan. 13, welcoming the community to Saturday Splat, a morning of memorable messiness for tots with minimal mayhem for parents. Heather Burns, the preschool’s director, said the “friendraiser” is the school’s way of welcoming all to learn about the value of exploration, creativity and imagination for young minds. “I hope that what families learn by being here today is that open-ended exploration is how youngsters learn,” she said. “We offer many great tips that can easily be replicated at home, so that parents can continue the learning outside of school.” As families entered the school, the floors were lined with taped-down paper. Barbara Smith, a grandmother from Northfield, said the style of art was clearly modeled after abstract artist Jackson Pollock, coining the room “The Jackson Plumber room”. “We are serious Northfield folks — third generation,” she said. “There is nothing better than watching my own grandkids immerse themselves in the same type of creative freedom that my own kids were allowed to do so in this community when they were children.” As guests followed the painted footprints, they were lead to a room filled with foaming shaving cream, giving tots the chance to engage in sensory play. Pint-sized visitors rolled up their sleeves and dove right into the sweetsmelling cream, blissed out on fun. With shaving cream mashed into their hair, they then rinsed off in a splash table filled with object-infused ice cubes, causing little minds to wonder, “How’d they do that?” With paint on their shirts and shaving cream in their locks, little ones then found a room with loose parts such as dried spaghetti, macaroni, cardboard boxes, ribbon, tape and glue. Teacher Natalie Zawrazky manned the room, explaining the type of learning that was occurring among the mess. “Children need to do it themselves in order for Oscar (top) and Matilda Yocom-Piatt, of Northfield, play with boxes and other loose parts Jan. 13 at Northfield Community Preschool’s Saturday Splat. People often don’t understand that this type of open-ended, unstructured play is learning. It’s amazing the lessons learned with a box of noodles.” Brad Loebbara came with his son, Johnathan, interested in enrolling his son as a future student. “The atmosphere seems fun and low pressure,” Loebbara said. “My son is having a blast just having the opportunity to roam about and create. Everyone here seems really kind and invested in seeing that kids learn, but have fun at the same time.” Winnetka the winnetka current | January 25, 2018 | 13 W i n n e t k a 603 proviDent • Extraordinary newer built (2004) 5BR/4.1BA home for the most discerning buyers. • First floor has large entrance foyer, living with fireplace and bay window, elegant dining room, gourmet kitchen with table eating area all adjacent to beautiful family room with fireplace. • Classic French doors lead to outdoor fireplace & private patio with yard beyond. • The large custom mudroom with walk-in closet off driveway w/ covered porch is ideal. • The second floor has gorgeous master suite with fireplace, lovely bath and phenomenal closets. • Three additional bedrooms and two baths (one en suite) also on 2nd floor plus full laundry room. • Lower level has 5th bedroom and full bath, large rec room, media room (or second family room) and wine cellar. • Better than new with extraordinary finishes, exceptional design all meticulously cared for in the heart of town.
