48 | January 25, 2018 | The tinley junction Sports 22nd Century Media freelancer earns volunteer award Photographer Geoff Stellfox recognized by Bremen School District 228 Athlete of the Week 10 Questions with Dan Gierhahn Dan Gierhahn is a senior guard on the Andrew boys basketball team. How did you get started playing basketball? From what I can remember, it started about fifth grade, because I actually used to play baseball, and that was kind of my first sport. On the side, I played [basketball] with my friends, and it kind of just took over my love of the game, compared to baseball. 22nd Century Media freelance photographer Geoff Stellfox (left) poses for a photo with Tinley Park High School students Karina O’Harrow (middle) and D’ante Miller Jan. 16 during the Bremen School District 228 Board of Education meeting. Stellfox was the primary photographer for Tinley Park football games in 2017, and he went above and beyond to interact with players, students and coaches positively. For his work, he received a Volunteer Excellence Award Jan. 16. Photo submitted Family owned business built on Trust! I would probably say playing at the United Center as a sophomore, because we were actually supposed to play there this year, but it got canceled. So, I was fortunate enough to play there as a sophomore [on the varsity team]. What are your goals for this season? I want to win conference, because Andrew hasn’t won conference — we’ve only won one conference [title] in the 40-year history of the school, so I think that’d be a big achievement, if we won conference as a team. What do you like the most about basketball? I just like the up-tempo style, and you can kind of be who you want to be on the court. You can kind of show your creativity off, and it’s all you out there. What is the best advice you’ve gotten from a coach? Probably to play my own game, because there’s been times where I’ve been kind of caught in the moment and I try to do too much. But if I play my own game, then it’ll just come to me. Who is your favorite professional athlete? I would say Isaiah Thomas. He’s small, like me, and the things he does in the NBA, it’s pretty remarkable for that size. And he’s 22nd Century Media File Photo kind of been counted out his whole life. If you could travel anywhere, where would you like to go? I would say Australia, because I heard it’s really nice over there, and I’ve kind of seen a lot here in the U.S., and I think it’d be cool to just experience the other side of the world. What is a perfect postgame meal? I’d say steak with a side of green beans and some rice. I’d say Texas Roadhouse is my favorite place. [I’d get] a filet mignon, [done] medium-well. If you could have a celebrity coach your team for a game, who would you choose? I’d say Will Ferrell, because just from his movie “Kicking and Screaming,” I think he’d be hilarious, and he’d have us doing all sorts of goofy stuff. It’d just be really funny. What are your plans for next year? I actually got accepted and I will be attending Iowa State University to study engineering. ... If I have time, I might play some club [basketball], but I think focusing on academics is more important. Interview by Sports Editor Tim Carroll
