He said the Village’s ratio of revenue to expenditures was “very healthy” at 50 percent Despite expanding health care options for military veterans residing in Chicago’s south suburbs, Commander Jim Hudik of the Tinley Park VFW believes more can be done. Hudik, along with reprensentatives from Honor Flight Chicago, a non-forprofit organization that flies World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington D.C. free of charge, spoke to the League of Women Voters of the Palos Orland area on Jan. 13 at the Palos Heights Library about medical treatment options and honor services available for local vets. Topics of discussion included the Joliet Outpatient Clinic, Oak Lawn CBOC, Orland Park Vet Center and Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, with a primary focus on recent expanded services in Joliet, which Hudik hopes will continue. “We want to expand out there. The Joliet facility is open to veterans who need care, it’s a good option,” Hudik said. “They’ve worked with me on a number of issues. Their staff is very ventative, very caring.” The Joliet Clinic is on the site of the old Silver Cross building, which moved to New Lenox approximately five years ago. Also on site is a 67-unit apartment complex that provides affordable housing to veterans, which Hudik said also serves the homeless veterans population. Hudik said when the Joliet Clinic first opened, the only services offered were basics like blood pressure checks, but has expanded over the past two years to accommodate x-rays, eye doctors, and a full podiatry department. There are also two shuttle buses that transport patients from Joliet to Hines VA Hospital on a daily basis. “Most don’t like to drive to Hines,” Hudik said, adding that the choice between outpatient clinics and the VA hospital depends on where the veterans reside. “I would like to see, as well as the other vets, expansion here (in Joliet).” Honor Flight Chicago A Chicago-based nonfor-profit is actively seeking World War II veterans for an all expenses paid trip which left an excess of $11.9 million transferred into the capital improvement projects fund. Because the Village administered less than $750,000 in federal grants, a separate federal reporting audit was not necessary, Cervini said. Trustee Michael J. Mangin said the report displayed to Washington D.C. to visit several war monuments as part of a day of celebration and honor. Honor Flight Chicago, founded in 2008, has flown over 6,500 veterans, primarily from WWII, but also the Korean War, on over 80 flights departing from Chicago’s Midway Airport where veterans and volunteers arive at 4am when the day begins. From there, veterans and a guardian, who do have to pay for their flights, are treated to displays of honor from local emergency responders, school students, and active armed services personnel wherever they go. The cost to veterans is absolutely free with private and corporate sponsorships and donations covering the expenses. The trip culminates with stops at various Washington D.C. landmarks including the WWII memorial, Korean War memorial, Vietnam Wall memorial, and more. Honor Flight Chicago is currently prioritizing flights for WWII veterans, before Korean War veterans are flown in mass. Special medical requests can often be accomodated.
