Meet our Executive Directors and General Managers... Richard Ball Executive Chairman Once upon a time (not so long ago) a young Mr. Ball sat down for a winefuelled chat with his father. Somehow, after a flurry of ideas, a lot of careful consideration and even the thought of madness crossing both their minds, that chat ended in a long car journey to a derelict farm in the Cotswolds. Yes, you guessed it... Calcot. Needless to say, it was love at first sight. Richard tackled the notion of becoming a country house hotelier head on, undertaking a degree in Hotel Management at Oxford Brookes University before going on to open Calcot Manor; a seven-bedroom hotel, as a family business in 1984. In 1995, when the Stone family acquired Calcot, Richard was retained as the Managing Director. Then tasked with developing the hotel to its current size and turning Calcot into a Collection, Richard became the Executive Chairman in 2012. Cathy Ball Spa Director Cathy’s appetite for hospitality began when she underook a Degree in Hotel Management at Oxford Brookes University, where she accidently fell in with the wrong crowd... Yes, we mean Mr. Richard Ball. Seeing Cathy’s knack for hospitality, when she graduated, Richard jumped at the chance to snap her up, coaxing her into joining the Calcot family in 1988. creative... calm... multitasker... perfectionist... listener... traveller... Cathy became Calcot’s asset, launching a succesful marketing campaign and then, as the hotel grew into a blooming business, heading up the accounts and personnel departments. She’s a master of multi-tasking! thoughtful... driven... charitable... nurturing... bike ninja... caffeind... Recognised within the industry as a bit of a tour de force, Richard has been credited throughout his career, chairing Master Innholders from 2005 to 2007, the Pride of Britain Hotel Consortium from 2000 to 2003 and being awarded the gong for Hotelier of the Year by his peers in 2007. He also chairs the regional board for Hospitality Action, cycling around Europe for the cause, espresso in hand! As Calcot’s expansion got underway, Cathy became involved in the research and development of the soon-to-be Calcot Spa and with a firm idea of what Calcot was striving for, she was consequently appointed Spa General Manager just prior to its opening in 2003. In 2004, after a year at the head of Calcot’s most exciting operation, Cathy became a director of the company. With the acquisition of Barnsley House in 2009, it was a no-brainer that Cathy would take on the successful redesign and re-launch of the Barnsley Spa. With the Collection growing, we’re pretty sure she’s set to do the same in one of the “little sisters” in the near future.
Paul Sadler Director & General Manager of Calcot Paul first dabbled in the industry working part-time as a 'tween, but after catching the bug for hospitality he decided it was the right career path for him. In 1987, Paul took the plunge and joined the Calcot team. As the hotel grew, Paul became very involved in its expansion and in 1999 he was appointed General Manager. In 2003, with the Spa well underway, he became a company director. Michele Mella Director & General Manager of Barnsley House Michele is our continental man. Hailing from Italy, he trained in hospitality European style, working for a while in Germany before he headed across the North Sea to the big smoke of London where he was based in F&B operations at The Dorchester and Claridges. In 1998 he retreated to the countryside, taking the role of Assistant Restaurant Manager at Calcot Manor. approachable... dedicated... ambitious... networker... educator... rugby nut... passionate... energetic... generous... charismatic... continental… kind... Heavily involved in the industry and a respected GM, Paul has been selected to be chairman of various hospitality institutions and committees including St. Julian Scholars, Cirencester College Academy of Hospitality, Tourism Skills Network South West, Cotswolds Finest Hotels and the British Hospitality Association South West. He is also a proud Freeman of London, a Master Innholder and a devout rugby fan. Nicky Farquhar Design Director Nicky has a real talent for making our hotels look and feel fantastic. Sympathetic to each building's personality, she has a real knack for complimenting the interior perfectly, enjoying each project that is sent her way. artistic... inventive... bold... discerning... detailed... curious... Trained at the Inchbald School of Design, Nicky began her career setting up her own business with a partner titled "Newton Designs." Working primarily on private residences within the London area, they traded for eight succesful years. Now we have managed to nab her, the interior design of all four of our hotels is overseen by Nicky and her team. Over the next 11 years, Michele’s role developed, looking after F&B and then becoming assistant manager. During this time he won a scholarship at the Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne and earned the prestigious badge of a St. Julian Scholar, a fantastic achievement. In 2010, with the acquisition of Barnsley House, Michele was appointed as General Manager and overseer of The Village Pub, followed shortly afterwards by his appointment as a company director in 2011. We think it’s fair to say he has sparkled ever since. We also have two non–executives on the board...
