TEXAS MASTER NATURALIST The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, chapter members have enjoyed learning together and sharing their love of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of a state-wide Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in 44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted projects on approximately 195,700 acres of habitat while also developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive trails. The Texas Master Naturalists program is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. For additional information, call 281-633-7033 or email TEXAS MASTER NATURALISTS ANNOUNCE SPRING TRAINING SCHEDULE As a Master Naturalist, you will join a corps of volunteers dedicated to the beneficial management of our natural resources and natural areas. Are you interested in our natural habitat -learning more about native plants and grasses; local geology; natural water systems; native birds, insects and mammals; hummingbirds or butterflies; our overall ecosystem? If so, you can enhance your knowledge of these areas and more by becoming a Certified Texas Master Naturalist. Naturalist students and graduates of this program volunteer for numerous projects around Fort Bend and Waller County including Katy Prairie Conservancy, Brazos Bend State Park, local independent school district educational programs, Fort Bend County Fair, the Prairie Heritage Festival and the Chapter’s signature project, Seabourne Creek Nature Park. You may be involved in anything from trail management to educating students about our natural habitat… you will decide based on what interests you most. The classes are scheduled to begin March 24 th and complete on Saturday, May 26 th and will include four evening classes on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9 PM and eight Saturday classes from 9 AM until 2 PM. Saturday classes are held at nearby parks and preserves to provide additional educational opportunities for new trainees in the field. In addition to attending classes taught by recognized experts in their fields, you will participate in field trips to exciting locations including Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, Sea Center Texas, Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, Brazos Bend State Park and Katy Prairie Conservancy. You will have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge of local geology, range management and ecological diversity. You will also visit local properties to view and discuss different habitats and ecosystems. The total cost for the program is $175 for individuals or $300 per couple who share a training manual. BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy Roof Leaking?
