Thank-you for helping. Play questions our tolerance The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time, adapted by Simon Stephens from the novel by Mark Haddon, directed by Lara Macgregor, at the Court Theatre Reviewed by Barry Southam THIS PRODUCTION has a stellar performance from Tim Earl about a troubled young man who can’t bear being touched. The young man, Christopher, is certainly not your normal person – his take on language is different from yours and mine and he is a whizz at mathematics. The play celebrates Christopher who is most certainly an outsider of the first order. He TROUBLED: Serena Cotton (Julie) and Tim Earl (Christopher) in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. describes himself as “a mathematician with some behavioural problems,” and these come to the fore as he tries to ACCOMPLISHED: Kathleen Burns, Matt Hudson, Serena Cotton, Roy Snow, Steven Ray, and Margaret-Mary Hollins in a scene from the production. discover who has murdered a dog with a pitchfork. In the process he beats himself up and angers his father who just wants him to stay out of other people’s business. Mark Wright as the father was initially too loud in his frustration, but fortunately tones it down quickly. His son is very much the centre of the play. The characters surrounding Christopher are revealed by readings from a book Christopher has written. The The Star device works well and we also get to know Christopher in all his differences. At one point a circular railway track descends onto the stage around which a toy train travels, though the significance of this is not immediately obvious. However, in a later scene Christopher struggles with the London tube, the chaos of which is brilliantly portrayed on the Court’s stage. The play has Christopher on the verge of autism and expects us to examine our own attitudes to people who are not the same as us. We are being required to “walk in someone else’s shoes,” and thus become more accepting of difference, to be more patient and tolerant in our dealings with others. Tim Earl played the part of Christopher in an Auckland production before coming to Christchurch and thus a very well-rounded rendition results. He is backed by an accomplished cast as you would expect from the team at The Court. Well worth seeing. •The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time runs until April 22.
