24 Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday March 23 2017 News Student accommodation facility up for auction NEWLY-opened Canterbury University student accommodation, which was converted from a rest home, is to be sold by its Hamilton owners who have committed to their next project. Kirkwood Avenue Hall accommodating 74 full-time students, opened this year, as a self-catered facility for first year students. The property, from 7-15 Kirkwood Ave was previously St Nicolas Aged Care Facility, operated by Bupa New Zealand. The change from a rest home to university accommodation was contentious, with neighbouring residents concerned it would result in more traffic and noise. They were also worried about the lack of consultation on it, because it was a non-notified resource consent. But the university got the goahead in November 2015 when resource consent was granted. Colliers International Christchurch investment broker Courtney Doig is marketing the property for auction on April 13. The land holding of 5900 sq m is in three titles and the building AUCTION: The Canterbury University accommodation building that was converted from the St Nicolas Aged Care facility is up for sale. itself covers 2630 sq m. Ms Doig said the new hall had helped to address a scarcity of quality student accommodation close to the university. The university had a 12-year lease on the recently-refurbished property with a further right of renewal of nine years. “This is a highly sought after area, right in the heart of residential Ilam/Upper Riccarton. There are a number of savvy buyers looking for student accommodation investments, however, there have been very few conversions of this scale and quality.” Ms Doig said six ownership units just along the road at 12 Kirkwood Ave, also leased by the university, sold in 2015 for $1.4 million. “We think this latest property will be snapped up by someone looking for a significant land holding with a solid tenant covenant that earns annual rent of $320,000 net,” she said. – NZ Herald City outlet for designer CHRISTCHURCH interior design company Frobisher will be the only outlet in the country to sell furniture from an international designer who has worked on celebrity homes.
