Some raised money and awareness for various charities, while others participated to achieve personal goals. Event organiser Vanessa Fleming said the numbers were up on last year’s event, especially in the Sport Canterbury 6km event. She said more than 150 teams entered, which ranged from teams of five, to He Waka Tapu’s 1200. The introduction of healthy food options and free fruit at the finish line was a success, she said. “It was a great community event with a great atmosphere. Overall it was another successful event and we’ll be announcing next year’s date soon.” Lincoln’s Ieuan van der Peet was the first to cross the finish line at Ferrymead playing fields in the 14km event, followed by Matt Dryden and Jason Matulick Ella Jarrett, 13, of Heathcote Valley, won the major spot prize of free return flights to a Singapore Airlines destination of her choice. Star Media chief executive Steve McCaughan said it was a great day out, with people taking part from all walks of life. “In 43 years it’s never rained. “We had a great prize pool this year it was good to see so many prizes go at the end of the fun run.’’ Participants may have seen some familiar faces, with former All Black captain Richie McCaw and wife Gemma running in the 14km event.
