The Star Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday April 6 2017 31 Theatre/Arts Pet rats star in curious mystery tale • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding IT IS not uncommon to squirm when you think of rats. Commonly stereotyped for being infested with disease, destroying everything in their path and having long, unnerving hairless tails – Tim Earl was originally wary of the rodents. But that was before he starred in a show where the unsung creatures finally get to have their moment in the spotlight. Beloved pet rats Rata and Tui have been taking turns to star alongside Earl, 23, in his role as an autistic teenager in The Court Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Rata and Tui are alternatively playing the role of Toby, the treasured pet rat of character Christopher Boone, played by Earl. It is not the first time the Rolleston resident has played the role after he first performed with the Auckland Theatre Company last year. After discovering rats are “inquisitive”, “friendly” and even “cute”, Earl was delighted to have the opportunity to work with them for a second time. The rat chosen for the role on the night will appear on the stage in a cage before Earl shows it off to the audience. Unsurprisingly, the rat’s appearances on stage gain mixed reactions from audience members. Owner of the rats, Arina Riley-Biddle, 16, said it is hilarious to watch some audience members hide behind their hands until either Rata or Tui are taken off the stage. After offering her rats for the show, she now has the role of entertaining, feeding and caring for them backstage. Riley-Biddle, of Sydenham, said there has been the odd performance where the rats will get an energetic “awww” from audiences made up of teenagers. The two rats even managed to successfully win over the hearts of some of their more “wary” fellow cast members. “In a bit of time everyone sees they are really friendly and I think everyone loves them,” Earl said. However, the grey rat, Rata, appears to enjoy the spotlight more. “When we used Tui, first-off she wouldn’t come out of the cage. Then, when Earl got her out of the cage, she would kind of jump off him,” Riley- Biddle said. She describes both rats as friendly, curious and smart. “The grey one always escapes the cage and you find her out in the cupboard sniffing around . . . the black one loves to lick people, that is their way of showing their love,” she said. Having always had a love of all kinds of animals, the Christchurch Rudolf Steiner School student is interested in working with police dogs as a career. •The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time will run at The Court Theatre through to April 22.
