Craig Miller, 52, died of a suspected heart attack while marking out the lines on the Darfield club’s main field on Friday. He was club captain at Darfield and a member of the Ellesmere sub-union’s management board. Over more than 20 years, he held several positions at the club, including president. HORNETS V PANTHERS The second round of the Canterbury rugby league premiership will see rivals, the Halswell Hornets and Hornby Panthers, meet at Branston Park on Saturday. The two sides have met in a number of memorable encounters, including 11 grandfinals, two of which were in 2012 and 2013. Both were decided in golden point extra-time. The game will start at 2.45pm. Beekeeper’s first bid for rally title GOVERNORS BAY’S Chris McLean is about to take on the NZ Rally Championship in the Ford Fiesta he has spent all summer preparing. McLean, 21, and navigator Sarah Brennan, 25, of Christchurch, will take on New Zealand’s best rally drivers starting with the Otago Rally this weekend, followed by five further events during the year. Now a beekeeper, this will be McLean’s rookie year in the NZRC. He will compete for the two-wheel-drive and junior NZRC titles. McLean has so far competed in a handful of South Island events, but has already been noticed as a driver with strong potential. He was recently selected to receive training with Hayden Paddon. While McLean is new to the championship, Brennan has had several years in the NZRC and has won the 2WD title twice, navigating for Christchurch’s Hamish Anderson. “Sarah brings really valuable experience,” said McLean. “She knows what she’s doing calling pace notes, but also how all the procedures work. Having been to these events before means Sarah will be a huge help in my NZRC rookie year.” The 2005 Ford Fiesta McLean now owns has a big history. The car launched the career of 2015 NZRC champion Ben Hunt, who drove it in 2009 as part of a scholarship. The Otago Rally begins on Saturday and finishes on Sunday. The event is expected to be one of the biggest in its history with more than 130 entries. Canterbury women aim to defend inter-centre bowls title on home greens • By Gordon Findlater THE CANTERBURY women’s team will defend their national inter-centre title on home soil. Eight Christchurch bowling clubs will host the three-day competition starting tomorrow. More than 20 provincial teams will descend upon Burnside, Papanui, Fendalton, Centre, Halswell, Belfast, Hornby and Parklands clubs for the tournament. “It’s great to have a national competition held across so many local clubs. The smaller clubs in particular are really excited,” said Mel Mather, Bowls Canterbury development manager. The competition is restricted to players who have less than eight years playing experience. The team of Cait Bassett, Fay Sampson, Alex Wilkinson, Donelda Scott, Kirsten Rowe, Tania Woodham and Vaneesa Tyson will defend the title won by last year’s side (pictured) in Wellington. The Star Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday April 6 2017 37 Warriors line-up unchanged for Eels match AN UNCHANGED 21-man squad has been named for the Warriors encounter with the Parramatta Eels at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday. The Warriors are set to use the same combination which closed out a thrilling battle against the Gold Coast Titans 28-22 to register the second win of their 2017 campaign. Second rower Bodene Thompson has been named in the second row after playing only the first half against the Titans. Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney brought James Gavet off the bench to start last weekend but he has again listed Charlie Gubb as veteran prop Jacob Lillyman’s starting front row partner. The extended bench comprises the same eight players selected last week. Kearney reiterated he was pleased with the manner in which the players performed in the second half against the Titans – especially the forwards – after some concerns in a first half which saw the Warriors fall 12-22 behind. He said the second half provided the kind of template the Warriors had been working on in the preseason and the opening rounds of the competition. With a completion rate of 18 from 21 sets (86 per cent), the Warriors were able to dominate possession and field position in the second half. The Warriors and the Eels come into the match with identical 2-3 win-loss records, the Warriors rebounding from three defeats to win last week while Parramatta has lost its last three to Gold Coast (14-26), Cronulla (6-20) and Canberra (18-30) after beating Manly and St George Illawarra in the opening two rounds.
