The Star Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday April 20 2017 17 News War brewing over memorial relocation • By Bridget Rutherford A MEMORIAL commemorating Cantabrians who died in World War 1 is embroiled in the Christ Church Cathedral saga – and the central city RSA has had enough. Christchurch Memorial RSA is about to begin discussions with the city council to have the cenotaph moved to Cranmer Square before it deteriorates any further. The Citizens’ War Memorial currently sits on Anglican Diocese land next to the Cathedral, but it is the responsibility of the city council. It has been fenced off since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. RSA president Pete Dawson said they wanted it moved in time for Armistice Day commemorations next year – which will mark a century since World War 1 ended. “If we rely on the Government and the church to get action here, we’ll be waiting forever,” he said. “We’re going to be engaging with the council shortly.” He said Cathedral Square was not suitable to hold the Anzac Day dawn service anymore URGENT: Paul O’Connor is spearheading a project to have the Citizens’ War Memorial moved to Cranmer Square. The diocese is allowed to request the cenotaph be moved, but it would need to get resource consent. A Church Property Trust spokesman said it would respect any decision agreed by the city council and other stakeholders about the cenotaph’s future. Paul O’Connor, who is helping with the moving project, said the cenotaph was “in the shadow of that shambles of a Cathedral.” “It’s the wider Canterbury memorial to all of those who lost their lives and we’re treating it poorly.” City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said there was no budget to move the cenotaph, and it had no plans to do so at this stage. •Watch the video at www.star.kiwi CONTINENTAL RENNSPORT | RENNSPORT BMW E3O | 2K CUP SOUTH ISLAND | OSCA RX7 SOUTH ISLAND | PRE 65 | MINI 7 | NZ6 | SHELLSPORT | SS CUP
