Ellesmere students take stand • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ELLESMERE College students have been pledging their support to stand together against bullying. The school took part in the Mental Health Foundation’s nationwide Pink Shirt Day to stop bullying recently. In the week leading up to the event, the year 12 health class decided to set up their own photo booth where students gave their support against bullying and promoted the day. The photo booth complemented the “pink promotes positivity” slogan students had come up with for the day. The school’s social prefects played the film A Girl Like Her to help other students understand bullying. Throughout the day, students wore pink and purchased candyfloss to show their support for spreading positivity and taking a stand against bullying. Administration support teacher Lindsay Cook said the health class wanted students at the school to feel comfortable with themselves regardless of their age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability or cultural background. “I think it goes without saying that we all want to feel safe, valued and respected wherever we go – school, work, home or in the community. This was the aim of Pink Shirt Day,” Mr Cook said. He said Ellesmere College has zero tolerance towards bullying and the event has been helpful in achieving this goal.
