The Star 21 Viewpoint Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday May 11 2017 Wagner sets her agenda IT’S A very exciting and important few weeks for me as I take over the reins as Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration. I was born and raised in Christchurch. This city is my home and the reason I got into politics – I want to ensure Christchurch is a great place to live for my family, friends and community. The last six years have been tough for us all. Everyone lost something – a family member, a friend, a home, a community, a lifestyle. Many have been injured, physically or emotionally, and we’ve all been stretched, sometimes almost to breaking point. But we’ve also supported one another through the initial disaster, the recovery, the rebuild and now, the regeneration phase. And we need to continue supporting individuals, organisations and communities still working through earthquake issues. Although we still have plenty to do, I want to start my tenure with a reflection on how far Nicky Wagner we’ve actually come. There is so much to acknowledge and celebrate, and I’m very proud to be part of this community and its progress. Right now, Christchurch is a city of real opportunity. I think we all want the same thing – a vibrant, peoplefriendly city where our families can thrive. We want a great education for our kids, we want training and higher learner opportunities, we want jobs we like, we want support services, solid infrastructure and a safe place to relax and enjoy ourselves. And we can do it. I’ll be working hard alongside Mayor Lianne Dalziel, the city council, Regenerate Christchurch, Otakaro, other agencies and community groups and, most importantly, you. By working together we can create something really special. I know there’s still a lot of work to be done. We need to pick up the pace and stay focussed on moving in the right direction. The ultimate test for everything we do needs to be: Is this good for Christchurch? If every decision, plan or project can pass that test, then we’ll be safe in the knowledge that our city will be good for us and for many generations to come. •Nicky Wagner is Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Labour goes back to school ANDREW LITTLE did it. Labour’s education spokesman Chris Hipkins did it. I did it. In fact, most of my Labour colleagues did it. That’s right, we all went back to school for a few hours. No, it wasn’t to learn campaign tactics from the schoolyard as one wag suggested, but to show support for better funding of teacher aides and other school support staff. For a couple of hours, we shadowed teacher aides and got to see first-hand what they do and were reminded of the challenges they face. Teacher aides are the people who work one-on-one in the classroom with children who need extra help. This is not only hugely beneficial to the child receiving the support, but also allows the classroom teacher to work with other children in the class. At the Wigram school I was at, I was blown away by the patience, compassion and professionalism of the staff I had the privilege to shadow. Teacher aides do an amazing job with some of our most vulnerable children and they deserve better recognition. That recognition needs to start with funding. School support staff are paid out of the school operations grant, competing with day-to-day costs like electricity, ICT, and maintenance. But in last year’s Budget, the National Government snuck through a freeze to this very school operations grant. This funding freeze was unprecedented. No Government as far back as 1999 has ever frozen school funding before, and it’s put strained school budgets under more pressure. Schools are having to ask parents with tight family budgets for more, and for some this isn’t possible. Labour has made a clear commitment to fund school support staff through a centralised system, as we presently do for teachers. We’ll ensure support staff are given better training and professional development and have access to a career framework that rewards them for advancing their skills. •Megan Woods is Labour’s Canterbury spokeswoman Vortex Flush NEW LOCATION 13b Parkhouse Rd, CHRISTCHURCH NEW JSD12-6DH 6L Per Min Califont Internal, Battery Operated RRP $399 Now $199 T025 RRP $599 Now $429 T005 RRP $399 Now $289 Large range of Tapware and baths at discounted prices OPEN 7 DayS Mon-Fri 9am - 5.30pm | Sat 9.30am - 4pm | Sun 10am-3pm 0800 MILLEN | www.millen.co.nz | 03 348 8678 FREE installation* SALE We’ll keep you warm this winter.
