The Star 39 Driven FREE WEEKLY MAGAZINE in stands every Friday Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday May 11 2017 OVER 1000 VEHICLES FOR SALE Holden on track with cheeky Trax Best Motorbuys TM Below is a small selection of our great deals! To advertise in Best Motorbuys, phone Lea Godfrey 021 277 3086 • By Ross Kiddie IT’S NO secret Holden will cease manufacturing operations in Australia towards the end of this year. While many will lament the passing of the iconic vehicles for which we have come to love down under, the good news is that Holden on both sides of the Tasman has a vision for the future, and slowly but surely that plan is coming to fruition. Effectively, it means all Holden vehicles will be sourced from other global manufacturing sites, as the plan unfolds a lot of our Holden-badged product will come from Europe and the United States and already we are seeing, several models land here from Korea. Notably, Holden have introduced a new Barina and Trax. An evaluation on the Barina will appear in these columns soon, this evaluation focuses on the Trax, a small sport utility vehicle which is based on the Barina platform. When I say SUV, the Trax can’t really be described as a genuine allrounder, it is two-wheeldrive (front) only, but it looks the part with its big 18in wheels and chunky styling cues. The Trax lands here in three specification levels, all have the same 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and share a sixspeed automatic gearbox, that being the only driveline in the new model. The engine is rated with 103kW and 200Nm of power and torque outputs. The beauty of modern turbocharging techniques is to enhance low down engine power without sacrificing fuel economy. Peak power is realised at just 4900rpm and maximum torque is available at 1850rpm, these figures are enviable. Even though overall engine capacity is low at 1364cc, it feels strong from early in the rev band, and punch through the mid-range encourages lively acceleration. The six-speeder is a classy gearbox with smooth, quick shifts and ratios which extract well engine power and levelling out to produce relaxed engine motion at highway speed. HOLDEN TRAX: Developed for down under conditions. Holden claim a 6.7-litre per 100km/h (42mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating, which sat well with my 8l/100km (35mpg) evaluation average. Given that I tend to explore turbo boost just to feel engine urgency, these figures are quite respectable. The boost isn’t overly punchy, but it is still there to be felt and if you give the throttle a bit of encouragement at take-off a standstill to 100km/h time of around 10sec can be expected. • Price – Holden Trax LTZ, $36,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4257mm; width, 1776mm; height, 1674mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, front-wheeldrive, 1364cc, 103kW, 200Nm, six-speed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 10.5sec • Fuel usage – 6.7l/100km At that speed the trip computer lists a 4.8l/100km (58mpg) instantaneous fuel usage figure, which is frugal and reinforces my statement about economy. Not only does the Trax feel sprightly, it also sits tidily on the road. While the suspension is quite simplistic with its front strut, and rear tube beam tying the rear wheel hubs together, the handling sensation is one of competence. Holden has done a lot of development on Korean cars for our market and it certainly shows, the Trax is accurate in a corner and it doesn’t rely on the tyres to maintain grip. On that subject, the 18in Michelin rubber (215/55) has quiet riding properties and affords genuine feedback through the steering wheel. The suspension has spring and damper rates which are set quite soft, if you add in the height of the Trax at (1.67m) gravitational forces would ordinarily work against good suspension control. However, the Trax is balanced and responds capably when presented with a quick corner or two. In an everyday role, it feels light and nimble, it has manoeuvrability which fits well if dropping the kids off to school or tackling the supermarket car park, that will appeal to those who want the vehicle for the role in which it is primarily designed. It is cosy inside, but for four adults it is comfortable and has a relaxed seating position, it would be fine for three children across the rear but two car seats would certainly fill the rear seat widthwise. Behind sits a 356-litre cargo carrying area extending to 785-litres with the rear seats folded flat. The Trax lands here in three variations depending on specification. The entrylevel LS sits at $32,990 which is an economical starting point into an SUV, the mid-range LT is $35,490, while the LTZ as tested has all the bells and whistles at $36,990. Major features include leather trim with heated front seats, MyLink infotainment system, cruise control, electric sunroof, keyless entry and ignition and a full suite of safety kit which earns it a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating. Holden knows it has to provide buyers here with quality product, akin to what we have always related to with the brand. The Trax, and the car it is based on, have carved out a good reputation here for reliability, the newcomer lives up to that reputation.
