PROMISING swimmer Hannah
Bates is Bahamas-bound – but
she needs the community to
help get her there.
A quiz night will be held to
help the Lincoln resident get to
the 2017 Commonwealth Youth
Games.
Earlier this month Hannah,
16, returned home from the
Australian age group swimming
championships with a gold and
silver medal, qualifying for the
youth games.
Hannah was the only South
Island member of the 23-strong
New Zealand team in Brisbane
and the first ever representative
from the Selwyn Aquatic
Centre.
She is now part of a team of
34 Kiwis aged between 14 to
18 selected to compete in the
Commonwealth Youth Games
by the New Zealand Olympic
Committee.

Darfield
water
judged
the best

IF YOU live in Darfield, you are
drinking the best-tasting water in
New Zealand.
A blind taste test at the New
Zealand Water Industry Operators
Group conference decided the
township has the tastiest water.
It comes after a major upgrade
to the Darfield water supply in
2014 with the installation of two
deep ground bores, a 1000m3
concrete reservoir and a booster
pumping station.
A district council spokeswoman
said the bores source the artesian
water from deep underground
meaning the water is naturally
filtered providing a safe supply.
Mayor Sam Broughton, who
lives in Darfield, said it was nice
to celebrate some good news after
the improvements were made.
He said the two bores provide
an increase in reliability over the
summer and if work needed to
be done on either of the bores the
supply will still be continuous.
“I do enjoy the taste of water. It’s
fresh,” Mr Broughton said.

On page 1 today, Lincoln’s Hannah
Bates is doing just that as she
continues on her promising swimming
path.
In July, she’s off to the Bahamas
for a Commonwealth meet, which
could help springboard her to the
2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Realistically though, she is
looking further ahead to the 2024
Olympics when she will be in her
mid-20s and at the top of her game.
The hard yards are getting up
just after 5am to train for a couple
of hours, off to school and then
when she gets home it’s back into
the pool again.
There’s a quiz night in July and
a givealittle page to help Hannah
achieve her goals.

Parking problem at busy pie shop

issues.

“We understand we have created
this busy business . . . but

owner Loretta Paterson said.
She said a group of district
councillors visited the area
about four years ago to assess
the car parking issue but nothing
eventuated.

Other suggestions included
lowering the speed limit from
70km/h to 50km/h and making
adjacent street, Duke St, oneway
with vehicles exiting via
Vogel St.
This would help stop customers
parking on neighbour’s
lawns on Duke St as well addressing
problems around the
lack of visibility drivers have
exiting the street onto the main
highway due to vehicles parked
outside the business.
Mrs Paterson said the shop
would also like to see Duke St
widened with parallel parking
put on the bakery side, curbing
put in place and 10min parks on
the main road.
The bakery currently has 10
car parks located behind the
building.
But the district council’s chief
executive David Ward said
following an on-site meeting
earlier this month, it was agreed
the community committee
would formally request Duke St
is upgraded.
“That request has not yet been
received, and no decisions on or
commitments on further work
has been made,” he said.
As for lowering the speed
limit, the outcome is unlikely.
A NZTA safety team spokesman
said while it is looking to
improve parking on State Highway
73, the current speed limit
is seen as appropriate.
“However, the transport
agency will investigate installing
larger signs at the entrances of
the township,” he said.
It is estimated by NZTA nearly
1800 vehicles travel through
the township each day.

Arthur’s Pass village is a gem
in the Arthur’s Pass National
Park with a rich history and
stunning scenery. It lies on State
Highway 73, the midland rail
line (both critical links between
Canterbury and the West Coast)
and on the Te Araroa trail running
the length of New Zealand.
The community is tight-knit
and is made up of a small resident
population and numerous
bach-holders, all with a passion
for the special character of the
place.
Its beauty is in its remoteness,
the steep rocky slopes, the bush,
the wildlife, the high rainfall
and the big rivers.
These features, and its proximity
to Christchurch, also make it
attractive with increasing numbers
of trampers, backpackers
and tourists passing through the
area on an annual basis.
A number of these features
also contribute to its vulnerability,
illustrated by large slips
closing the state highway earlier
this year, and fire has also cut off
access recently – along the state
highway and on the midland
line.
Remoteness breeds resourcefulness
and resilience, and the
Arthur’s Pass community has
this in spades – however, this
will be more and more tested as
visitor numbers increase.
We are upgrading our
community centre and have
upgraded the squash court. We
recently lobbied for, and now
have a recycling facility, and
have regular community gatherings.
The community also fulfils a
huge role in pest control, now
managing about 800 predator
(stoats and possums) traps in the
area – much of this voluntary.
More visitors means more

demand on toilets, camping
areas, walking tracks and other
visitor facilities – or even worse
could mean more litter along
the road side, more uncontrolled
toileting, more fires, more road
accidents and more mountain
rescues.
Locals provide a volunteer fire
brigade (emergency response)
dealing with emergencies. They
assist tourists, and clean up the
mess after careless visitors.
Partnership is required to protect
what we have, not just with
agencies such as Department
of Conservation and district
council, but with all our visitors.
Everyone needs to do their
bit and be a safe and tidy Kiwi.

about the new skate park
which will go next to the
Lincoln Event Centre

understand the reluctance of
Lincoln residents to have a
skate park located close to their
homes.
We owned a property close to
the Prebbleton skate park and it
does impact on a property’s sale
ability.
We found numerous potential
purchasers who came through
the open homes expressed concern
about how close the skate
facility was to neighbouring
homes and felt this detracted
from the appeal.
There was increased vehicle
traffic in a previously quiet culde-sac,
we often had cars parking
over our driveway and visitors to
the park would often walk over
our property to get to the park.

wish to cater for the youth
of Selwyn. However, the local
residents’ (ratepayer) concerns
need to be heard and seriously
considered before any future
development is undertaken,
especially within a subdivision.
In spite of the district council’s
assurances, these facilities do
have an impact neighbouring
properties.

Keep it black and white. Do we
want second-tier tourists who
add little and cost New Zealanders
heavily? Simple answer is no.
Do we want high-quality tourists
who add value? Yes.
Ban freedom campers period.
Make people stay in Department
of Conservation camps
or normal camping grounds.
It’s not fair that campground
owners invest and provide a
good service. Why should people
camp essentially where they like?
This country attracts tourists
based on our clean image and
the beauty we have. Keep this up
and no one will want to come to
New Zealand, which will just be
another trashed, filthy country
like so many others.
Tourism, if managed properly
and if we invest heavily into
infrastructure, can work. But
typical of all Governments, and
at the local level too, they are reactive
and lazy, rather than being
proactive and anticipating likely
outcomes before they happen.
Our politicians and councillors
are too self-serving and
interested more in keeping their
jobs than doing the hard yards
necessary to protect what we
have . . . the environment is being
severely compromised all in
the name of money.
As a New Zealander, I’m far
from happy the way we are being
sold out. Like the state of our
waterways, it’s a disgrace. Clean
and green is the biggest con. New
Zealanders will soon wake up, as
will the rest of the world, and see
that New Zealand is a rout.
We invest too much on marketing
how great we are. I only
wish so much effort and money
went into protecting what we
have for future generations.
Sustainability springs to mind.
Lincoln firefighters involved in big house blaze

LINCOLN firefighters were
among those who attended a
major house fire in Kaituna
yesterday.
A paraplegic man was rescued
from the fire by a farm worker.
The blaze consumed the
wooden, 100-year-old-plus property
quickly.
The man’s son, Brent Thomas,
said he was just thankful his
father got out.
Six fire crews from Lincoln,
Akaroa, Little River and
Christchurch battled the blaze.
Little River chief fire officer
David Irving said the fire started
in the roof.

Her weekly training schedule

She said she gets up
at 5.10am on Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday
to train at the
aquatic centre while
also training Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday
evenings.
But for now Hannah (left)
is concentrating on the youth
games, with her weekly training
schedule made up of swimming
at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre
eight to nine times, along with
attending the gym three times
and doing a pilates class.

Darfield water judged the best in NZ

The judging panel made up of
representatives from the WIOG,
chemical company IXOM and
Altitude Brewing decided Darfield
had the best-tasting water
based on how it looks, smells
and tastes.
The improved quality is a large
turn-around in the township’s
water supply.
In 2012, animal effluent in
Darfield’s water supply was
the cause of a gastroenteritis
outbreak affecting more than
110 people.
Darfield Bakery owner Daryl
Collier agreed the water quality
was good since the new bores
were installed but it took the district
council a long time to take
responsibility for the outbreak
in 2012.

Jim Brooker, who was responsible
for installing the first
water well west of the township
on resident Jill Logan’s property
said the news is a big boost for
the area.
“It is a big thing for Darfield,
we need this boost,” he said.
Darfield Garden Centre and
Florist manager Angela Lalor
said there are no complaints
from the plants over the water
quality.

Mr Collier said he has concerns
Darfield is the largest
townships without a sewage
system.
During the annual plan’s
deliberations last week no decision
was made on whether the
district council will go ahead
with the plan.
Mr Broughton said the district
council will look to work with
the community and scientific
data over the next 12 months to
make a decision on the system.

Rate increase
to manage
stormwater

RESIDENTS CAN expect a rate
increase of $85 per property in
areas where the district council
manages stormwater.
The issue was decided at Annual
Plan discussions on Thursday.
Nearly 14,000 properties will
be affected by the decision. They
include 5272 properties in Rolleston,
Lincoln (2035), Prebbleton
(1462) and Darfield (1112).
Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall
said the increase provides a better
way of managing stormwater
across the community.
“There will be winners and losers,
there will be some who will see
their rates go up and some will see
it go down. It will give us a larger
reserve in the future as issues come
along,” Cr Lyall said.
A health hub in Rolleston is also
on the cards along with an extension
for the Selwyn Aquatic Centre
also approved.
Mr Broughton said it was decided
the libraries will not be open
on Sundays after the submissions
were received were not supportive
of the idea.
But the library hours will be
open for longer on weekdays.

Jaz Tuihana Vivian, 22,
grew up in Southbridge
and is now making her
mark in the fashion
world. She talks to
Georgia O’Connor-
Harding
Tell me about your fashion
brand Losers Are Cool (LAC
Crews)?
I have always kind of had the
dream of doing a tomboy clothing
line but I have never really
known enough about it. So I
did a business course last year
and it made me a little bit more
confident about releasing it. A
couple of my friends are in the
fashion industry. I bounced ideas
off them, came up with a name,
put it all together and released it.
There is actually nothing online
that is purely tomboy clothing.
What I wanted to do was take
away that awkward shopping
down the wrong aisle thing and
make it all online so people
don’t have to go into the shop.
What made you realise you
were a tomboy?
I have always been a tomboy
out playing rugby and getting
muddy with the boys. I am not
a girly girl at all. Mum always
tells me about when I was
a kid she would dress me
in a pretty pink dress and
then I would go steal
my brothers’ clothes just
before we were about to
go out. I played rugby
for eight years. I had to
take time off this year
because it was getting
too busy but I am into
staying fit and
healthy. It
makes you feel better at the
end of the day.
Tell me about your
idea to have non-gender
based clothing?
I think these days
in our society you
know everyone is
breaking down the
barriers. And a lot
of things have come
to head that you know
back in the day
would be
scorned upon. I think with everyone
breaking down these barriers
why not me as well. I don’t
understand why there is girl and
boy clothing – it just puts that
line in the middle.
Have you always had a passion
for equality?
Just growing up being a tomboy
you always have your battles.
You have people at school and
stuff saying things to you and
it makes high school really uncomfortable.
I thought if I could
make it easy for people that are
younger, that is me doing my bit.
Was it a mission creating
these clothes?
It was a big mission but like I
said, I had a few friends in the
fashion industry so I bumped
heads with them and thought
what isn’t working about the
clothes now and what I can improve
on. Together we came up
with a few ideas. I made it very
basic so I can add onto it. My
sister Jayde Vivian is an upcoming
model so she was my model
and her friends are interested in
photography. Everything about it
means a lot to me. It hasn’t been
about making money. It is about
making a difference.
How did you get into the business
side of things?
Definitely, I left high school at
year 12. I was never into school
but I knew I had to carry on
doing something so I went to the
New Zealand Institute of Sport
thinking I would be a personal
trainer and then I did a marketing
paper in the curriculum. It
was just what we had to do and
I aced it. My teacher pulled me
aside and said that was the best
marketing paper she had seen.
I was like why don’t I venture
from that and do something with
it rather than sitting in a gym
all day. That is when I got into
business. I was the class clown at
school and it is a better
feeling being successful now having
not actually enjoyed school
at all.
What were your experiences
like at school and how did you
stay true to yourself?
I had a lot of support from
my family. Especially my mum.
We have quite an open relationship.
When I came home from
school she could tell I was upset.
I think that was the best. There
were a few teachers at school I really
related to. I think a mixture
of that and people telling me I
am unique is what pulled me
through. But I definitely got bullied
a lot.

Getting out of school must
have been the best for you?
Absolutely, I was definitely a
misfit. But I wouldn’t encourage
anyone to just drop out of school
- you have definitely got to have a
plan. Mum said as soon as I had a
plan I could sign out.
How did you come up with the
Losers are Cool idea?
It just stemmed from school.
I thought you look around the
classroom and you have your popular
kids, nerdy kids and out-right
losers. The losers end up being the
ones everyone wants to be around
because they are genuinely the
most successful ones.
Do you think people began to
look at you more positively as
you all got older?
Yes definitely, I have people
messaging me now saying: ‘I
know we didn’t get on at school
but what you are doing is awesome.’
You get the support from
those that influenced you to do
this. It makes you feel a lot better.
It all happened for a reason.
What are your other passions?
I work in hospitality as a bar
tender at The Sideline Sports Bar
in Richmond. I do my clothing
line throughout the day. My job
opened my eyes. I have been at the
bar almost four years. I think being
in the hospitality industry and
seeing people from all walks of life
has opened my eyes to equality
issues in society. Everyone should
be themselves and not be put
down.
What do you think of the
Southbridge community?
I love going to my mum’s in
Southbridge. The people there
are genuinely interested in what
everyone is doing. I know you get
the small town stuff but people are
interested in you going far. I like
that aspect of country life. Everyone
is genuinely happy and they
have been supportive to people of
all ages. One of my mum’s friends
bought my own clothing.
During those tough times at
high school how did you overcome
being bullied?
I still get really bad anxiety. You
have just got to remind yourself
you are going in the right direction.
It is hard at high school,
there is the councillor but people
feel intimidated going there
because it seems like they have got
an issue or weak. You have to find
someone to talk to – even if it is
just a teacher you have a comfortable
relationship with. I am a
pretty outgoing person so I didn’t
find it that hard.
Tell me a bit about your sister
Jayde?
At the start of the year she went
to New York Fashion Week. She is
signed with NZ Models & Talent.
They took a group of girls over
there to Australia to do workshops.
She said it was an amazing
experience and opened her eyes
up to the industry. She has left
school end of year 12 as well and
I suppose she is trying to find her
feet. My brother Tyler is in a band
called Idiio. It is short for idiosyncratic
meaning unique. He used
to be in a band in Christchurch
called the Make Believes. I think
we are all pretty creative.
Are there any other plans you
have for the future?
What I really want to do is be
a wedding planner and with my
clothing line I want to make tom
boy wedding apparel. That is my
end goal. I want to do suits but
tailored to fit women better. I
could go into the dresses. I could
make a dress that is more comfortable.
Have you always had an interest
in weddings?
I have always been fascinated
with love I think. It is amazing
and with all this stuff going on
with the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender community. I
think it is important to try and
embrace and make people feel
comfortable when it comes to
their super special day in the life.

Legal Assistance Online
A new concept in legal services has
been created by John Shingleton, with the
establishment of Online Lawyers in June 2016.
“After years of working in a legal system
that seemed clumsy and time-consuming, I
came up with the idea of a digitally based law
practice. My aim was to offer an efficient and
convenient, customer focussed service with a
fast turnaround time,” explains John.
John sought IT advice, on how a secure,

SOARING population
growth in Rolleston
is fuelling the launch
of a new residential
subdivision, Falcon’s
Landing.
The 62ha development
is situated off Lincoln
Rolleston Rd, in a
low-density area on
Branthwaite Drive. It
comprises 600 sections
ranging in size from 450 sq
m-1000 sq m, with prices
starting at $160,000.
Construction is due to
start in September and
the first titles are expected
to be through towards
the end of 2018. This first
release will consist of 120
sections.
The project is the work
of locally owned Gillman
Wheelans, an established
developer that was also
responsible for Levi Park,
in Rolleston.

made for a busy time at
West Melton School.
About 30 year 4 to 8
pupils, also known as the
Eco Warriors, along with a
group of parents travelled
to the school’s planting
site, Kowhai Sanctuary, on
Thompsons Rd.
The purpose was to
monitor last year’s plantings
of natives as part of
the Matariki celebrations
carried out by the school’s
year 3 and 4 team.
Following an examination
by the Eco Warriors,
it was estimated about 90
per cent of the plants had
survived.
The pupils also tracked
the number of birds and
located different types of

Lincoln surprise package
in UC Championship

LINCOLN COMBINED have
been handed just their second
defeat of the season as they fell
to St Andrew’s College 58-18 on
Saturday.
While it could be seen as
a 30-point defeat, it could
also be taken as a remarkable
turnaround when compared
to the result from the same
fixture two years ago, which saw
Lincoln defeated 0-91.
In previous years, Lincoln
have been seen as easy beats.
However, they proved that
wrong with a 15-10 round 1
upset over St Bede’s College,
which have won five of the last
nine championships.
Part of Lincoln’s rise this
season could be put down to
the inclusion of players from
Darfield High School, Akaroa
Area School and Ellesmere
College, hence the name Lincoln
Combined.
For some of the boys that
means a long journey for
training, but new Lincoln coach
Michael Wilson says everyone
has bought into the new culture.

capable of competing with
any championship team and
recently recorded their first win
over St Bede’s in 34 years.

Free Wi-Fi zones
coming!
Speed limit areas changing in
West Melton
The 70km speed zone on State Highway 73 in West Melton
township is being extended to take in some of the towns new
subdivisions.
The NZ Transport Agency which manages the state highway
network is altering the 70km zone so it extends around 250 metres
further east. The extension will enable safety improvements to be
made - the first of these will be the installation of a new pedestrian
refuge island and crossing point opposite the Wilfield subdivision to
the Gainsbourgh subdivision. Further crossings are planned either
side of the Weedons Ross Road intersection on State Highway
73 and flush medians will also be added on the State Highway in
conjunction with the crossing points.
A new walkway was recently developed from the northern end of
the new Wilfield subdivision along State Highway 73 to connect
to West Melton’s central township area and the West Melton
Domain. The crossing points will provide a safer crossing option
for people using these footpaths. The pedestrian improvements
being undertaken have been a collaborative effort between the NZ
Transport Agency, the Council, private land owners and developers
in the area.
Three free Wi-Fi zones will be operating in Selwyn soon, with one of the zones already available
in Darfield.
The new zones will offer free public Wi-Fi access from central facilities in Darfield, Lincoln and Tai
Tapu. The Wi-Fi zones are being provided by the Council through the Spark network and designed
to be used by both locals and visitors. They will allow people to connect to ultra-fast broadband
with usage not time or data limited.
The zone which is already operating is based at Darfield Library and extends approximately 50
metres around the library location. A similar 50 metre free Wi-Fi zone will start operating outside
Lincoln Library in June. A third free Wi-Fi zone is planned to start operating in central Tai Tapu by
the end of the year, with the site yet to be selected.
Malvern and Ellesmere Garden waste days
successful
Over 22 tonnes of green waste and 7 tonnes of scrap metal were collected from Ellesmere and Malvern
residents recently and have now been recycled or composted. The clean-up days were held in April
and were a chance for people to clean up their gardens and backyards by disposing of garden waste
and scrap metal at a local collection point.
The Council’s Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd says the days are a way to offer a low cost waste
disposal option to help reduce the amount of fly tipping and avoid junk building up on properties, while
also supporting local community groups.
Nearly $1,500 was also raised at the two days which will be given to the Malvern Lions and Ellesmere
Heritage Park who staffed the days. The Malvern Lions Club wished to thank the community for taking
part in the day. They plan to donate the funding they received to local sports groups. Groups who
would like to receive funding from the Lions are encouraged to contact them and register their interest.
The Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust will use the funding it received to continue restoration work on the
historic Carroll cottage.
On the roads this week
Construction of a temporary unsealed footpath is planned on the
north side of Birchs Road in Lincoln.
Road widening work is continuing on Jones Road between
Weedons Ross Road and the Lyttelton Port Company until mid-
June. The road will remain open, but may be reduced to one lane at
times with traffic delays expected. Maddisons Road is suggested as
an alternative route at peak times.
Sewer line installation continues on sections of Hamptons, Shands,
and Selwyn Road to the intersection of Springston Rolleston Road.
There may be a reduction down to one lane on these roads with
traffic delays possible.
Christchurch Southern Motorway extension
There will be changes to the traffic setups on both Weedons Ross
Road and Weedons Road over the next couple of weeks. The oneway
system remains on Waterholes Road from Hamptons Road to
833 Waterholes Road running south towards Robinsons Road with
detours in place, with changes to the road alignment to allow for
construction of the bridge. Please be alert to changes in the traffic
management, follow the on-site signage and drive to the conditions.

Southbridge advance to semi-finals

SOUTHBRIDGE have advanced
to the semi-finals of the
Combined Country Cup after
a hard fought 31-25 win over
Waihora on Saturday.
They also got revenge on last
year’s final which Waihora won
31-24 in June.
Southbridge dominated the
opening 40 minutes and went
into the sheds with a 24-8 advantage,
courtesy of two tries from
speedy winger Cameron Sheat.
Southbridge scored again early in
the second half, which extended
the lead to 31-8, before Waihora
launched a spirited comeback.
In the final minutes, Southbridge
found themselves holding
on to a slim lead and down to
14-men.
“The whole team stood up in
the last 15 minutes. We were
camped in our half with a man in
the sin-bin, but the guys showed
great character to hold on,” said
Southbridge coach Mike Rowe.
They now host Lincoln on
Saturday in another all-Ellesmere
clash, in which they will play for
a spot in the grand-final. The
two teams met in the opening
round of the competition when
Southbridge claimed the Murray
Cooper Shield.
“They’ll be a much-improved
team since then. They will have
done their homework and they
have one of the best forward
packs in the competition,” said
Rowe.
Lincoln were the only quarterfinalists
to win on the road when
they defeated Glenmark 19-15.

With thousands of cafés, it is no mean feat to
have your sausage roll voted in the top five in
New Zealand.
Recently, Coast radio station conducted a six
week search to find the country’s best sausage
roll. Hororata Village Bar & Café’s Butchers
Beef Roll received hundreds of votes and after
final judging, carried out by Masterchef winner
Brett McGregor and Coast Radio morning
host Brian Kelly, the beef roll was placed in the
Top 5 in New Zealand.
“The win’s exciting for our Butchers Pie
Brand,” says Jason Kupe who with Jarnia, owns
and operates Hororata Village Bar & Café.
Professionally trained butcher turned pastry
cook, Jason has perfected his skills, baking
the Butchers Pie and Beef Roll on site at their
Hororata café.
Jason knew he had a beauty when he created
the Butchers Beef Roll. This mighty big sausage
roll along with their Butchers Pie, have been
popular with customers since the couple took
over the business, five years ago.
“Our Butchers Beef Roll is made from quality
ingredients and encased in flaky pastry. It has
a touch of curry with cream cheese through
the middle of the meat so it’s moist and really
tasty,” says Jason.
While the bar and café missed out on the
title of best sausage roll, they are delighted in
the great achievement of making the top five
in New Zealand.
“Our customers are
our biggest judges,” adds
Jason.
“We’d like to say a big

A NOCTURNAL spider
commonly seen stealthily
lurking inside on the floor,
wall or ceiling is the whitetailed
spider.
There are two species in
New Zealand, one in the
North Island (Lampona
murina) and one in the
South Island (Lampona
cylindrata), but both originate
from Australia where
they are part of a complex
of 57 species.
The South Island species
(L. cylindrata) is the larger
of the two species ranging
from 12-20mm in length
and was first recorded in
Nelson in 1913.
FEARMONGERING: Studies from the New Zealand
Medical Journal in 2004 found no adverse effects
resulted from patients supposedly bitten by whitetailed
spiders. ​
The spiders have grey
bodies with two or four
pale markings on abdomen
as well as the distinctive
creamy-white tail, giving
the spider its name.
The female has a larger
oval abdomen, while the
male’s abdomen is thinner.
They hunt other spiders
– in particular the grey
house spider, another Australian
species.
White-tails go onto webs
of other spiders where the
feign a struggling insect
and ambush the owner.

However, based on a
New Zealand Medical

In fact none of the
patients actually reported
they observed a whitetailed
spider biting them.
The authors concluded
that “much of the fear that
surrounds these spiders is
unwarranted.”

Dig out your gumboots
TASTY: Rhubarb thrives in rich soil
WHILE THE beginning of
winter can be wet, cold and
miserable, there are still
many important tasks to be
carried out in the garden,
such as harvesting winter
vegetables, completing annual
pruning, planting new
fruit trees and watching
newly-planted strawberries
break into growth.
Winter vegetables should
now start maturing and
will be ready for harvesting
(if they aren’t already).
Results will be that much
more improved where vegetable
gardens have been
raised to avoid waterlogging
over the wet winter
months. Continue distributing
compost around
vegetables to help absorb
excess water from typical
winter downfalls. Vegetables
to harvest include
broccoli, brussels sprouts,
cabbage, carrots, cauliflower,
celery, leeks, lettuce,
parsnips, silverbeet and
spinach. Continue sowing
seeds of broad beans,
onions, peas, radish and
spinach directly into well
prepared and drained soil.
Old crowns of rhubarbs
can be divided and replanted
into permanent positions
around 600mm apart.

so add plenty of compost
when planting
Winter displays of annuals
should now be in full
bloom, including alyssum,
calendulas, lobelia, nemesias,
pansies, poppies,
primulas, snapdragons,
stock and sweet peas. All
these flowering annuals can
also be successfully grown
in containers or large tubs
and brings life to dull parts
of the garden or decks during
winter months.
The best selection of
deciduous fruit trees are
now available in garden
centres and it is a good
time to start planting. June
is the main month for
pruning your existing deciduous
fruit trees such as;
apples, apricots, nectarines,
peaches, pears and plums.
With young trees, it’s
important to develop a
strong structure that will
carry fruiting wood in successive
years. Older trees
may require more detailed
pruning. This involves
pruning out old wood that
is no longer providing fruit
and removing overlapping
laterals or branches and
any diseased wood.
You can also prune
raspberries, boysenberries,
loganberries and
gooseberries now. In very
general terms, remove all
old growth, selecting vigorous
growing wood. With
climbing berry plants,
select the strongest canes
and tie them to a supporting
framework.
In June and July, garden
centres are overflowing
with new season ornamental
trees and shrubs.
Preparation of planting
sites is critical.
In most parts of New
Zealand, the rose flowering
season is finished. If leaf
drop is complete, plants
can now be pruned.
Remove all dead wood
and inward growing
branches. Prune to outward
facing buds and remove
any wood that is narrower
than pencil thick. If any
plants have significant die
back, remove it and burn.
Apply a clean up spray
of copper oxychloride after
pruning.
New seasons roses are
now available at garden
centres. When you purchase
your rose, it may
be bare-rooted or potted.
Bare-rooted plants are
generally cheaper and will
need to be planted as soon
as possible. With potted
varieties, be careful not
to disturb the root system
when you plant them.
Roses can grow in a variety
of soils as long as they
have good drainage, so
add in plenty of compost.
Give your rose a generous
watering to help the roots
settle in and put a generous
layer (about 5cm deep) of
mulch around the base of
the plant.

As we approach
the winter months,
the gardening tasks tend to slow down. Now is a
great time to protect your plants from the cooler
temperatures, so when the single-digit temperatures
arrive, your plants aren’t shocked by the cold. There
are number of things that you can do to protect them,
here are our top tips.
What can I do to protect my garden and plants from the
bitter cold winter months ahead?
Add a 10cm layer of bark mulch or compost to your
gardens. The mulch will help to keep the soil at a
more even temperature, and so the roots don’t suffer
from the frosts. Cover any frost sensitive plants with cloth to protect
them (we’ve already had some good frosts so more are bound to
be on the way!). Make sure you secure them properly, you don’t
want them flying off in the strong winds we get around Canterbury.
Move plants in pots, containers and hanging baskets under some
shelter. If you don’t have a greenhouse or conservatory, the eaves
of the house will be the next best option. Make sure they aren’t
facing the southerly winds, and that the plants are still getting
sunlight!

A Chevrolet
experience
It was the sporty stylish look of the 1961 Chevrolet
Impala coupe that first attracted Anneliese to her car.
She was just twenty at the time.
“My father always had old American cars
so it wasn’t a surprise that I shared the same
passion,” explains Anneliese.
“We spent a lot of time looking for a car,
searching and considering options on eBay
then I saw the 61. It was in the days of dial
up Internet so bidding was slow and it took
some time to work out whether I’d won the
auction or not.”
Some years later, Anneliese still owns and
loves her car though it has been changed
over the years, with her Chevrolet Impala
coupe looking quite different from when it
first arrived in New Zealand.
“It’s been an on-going journey of
restoration,” explains Anneliese.
Over the years, the car has been totally
rebuilt. The engine was rebuilt recently
and in 2015 the interior stripped and
refurbished; taken back to the original
factory specification. This included restoring
the window mechanisms, and replacing all
interior hardware and upholstery.
The 1961 Chevrolet Impala coupe has a
348 cu in, Tri-Power, big block V8 engine
which was rebuilt by Rod Allen from New
Plymouth. The 348 cu in, 280hp was a
factory option in 1961.
In January this year, Anneliese took the
car to Muscle Car Madness in Rangiora
where it was judged one of the Top Ten
Cars. The event was a family affair with
husband, Mark and their daughters also
enjoying the weekend.
When Anneliese and Mark got
married, she drove the bridesmaids
to the church in her coupe then Mark
took over the wheel to drive them
to the reception at Mapua wharf in
Nelson.
Anneliese’s Chevrolet has featured
in the New Zealand Hot Rod magazine
and made the journey to the Beach
Hop in Whangamata several times.
The family enjoys attending car events
and Anneliese gets into the spirit,
dressing in 1960s vintage pin-up
fashion. They all enjoy getting out for
a day in Ms Dxie, as the car is fondly
called.
“The 61 rides differently to a
modern car, which we find enjoyable
to drive and I love the nostalgia it offers,”
adds Anneliese.
The 61 Chevrolet was judged a Top Ten
Car at Muscle Car Madness this year.

The district’s population and tourism
numbers have steadily increased in the last
five years with the result that Selwyn’s roads
are now much busier. This and the onset of
winter are good reasons to take extra care on
the roads while having your vehicle serviced,
before the seriously cold weather is on us
will help ensure it is up to the job ahead.
Driving in wintertime can mean
negotiating damp and at times icy roads,
as well as potentially dangerous conditions
when there is heavy rain, hail, sleet, snow or
fog.
Visibility is improved when windscreen
wiper blades are in good condition so
why not have these checked at one of the
automotive service centres around the
district?
After a dry patch, a residue of oil on the
road when combined with a little rain can
make the roads greasy and it will take longer
to stop when braking. This is made worse if
the tread on your tyres is worn or the brakes
are in poor condition. In fact, tyres that are
not road safe is a key reason for many WOF
rejections while poor tyre pressure also
makes vehicle handling and braking more
difficult.
Car batteries work harder in winter,
something that is worth having checked and
replaced if on the brink, to ensure the car will
start on those cold frosty mornings. Most
automotive centres or battery specialists
are able to test the life of a battery in just a
couple of minutes.
You will also want the heater working
properly, while the air conditioning is
a quick and efficient way to demist the
windows so ask your mechanic to check
these as well.
As antifreeze loses its effectiveness
with time, top this up to prevent the
water in your vehicle’s cooling system
from freezing and rust deteriorating the
radiator and engine.
A check over by your mechanic might
also show up any mechanical issues that
could impact on your vehicle’s reliability
or safety factor. They can carry out a
diagnostic test of your vehicle’s electrical
systems too.
Keep an eye on the due date for your
warrant of fitness over winter as your
insurance may be compromised if it has
expired. You will also avoid a fine by
having this up-to-date as well as your
vehicle registered.
Winter motoring means more driving
in poor light or at night. It will be safer if
your headlights are working and correctly
adjusted. This, along with not following
too close, by observing the two second
rule, will mean you have sufficient time
to stop.
Lastly, ensure a clear road ahead before
overtaking and never pass when there
are double yellow lines or a bend ahead
so you and other motorists are safe on
the roads this winter.

You may be surprised to find out that
dental and gum disease is the most
common health problem in dogs and cats
– with most developing gum disease by
three years of age. Can you imagine how
bad our teeth would get if we don’t brush
our teeth for three or more years!
Routine dental care for cats and dogs
can be easy and will benefit your pet’s oral
and overall health.
Signs of dental disease may include: bad
breath, yellow or brown deposits on the
teeth, loss of appetite, sensitive to touch
around the mouth, bleeding gums, loose
teeth, difficulty chewing or pawing at the
mouth or face.
So, how does dental disease start? Teeth
and gum disease starts when a film of
bacteria coats the tooth known as plaque.
Plaque hardens into tartar which can be
seen as a thick yellow to brown layer on
the teeth. Tartar irritates the gums and also
creates an environment where bacteria
thrive. As the disease gets worse the gums
become tender, red and swollen. The
gums eventually start pulling away from
the teeth creating pockets that trap more
bacteria and bits of food. As the gums
recede, it may bleed and the tooth root
becomes exposed, teeth may also become
loose. Your pet will very likely feel pain
or discomfort when eating. The bacteria
will eventually enter the blood stream and
they can create health problems and affect
vital organs.
What can we do about this?
Pets, like people, require routine dental
care from you and your vet. Regular
checkups with your vet will help monitor
your pet’s dental health, however if
you suspect a problem don’t hesitate to
contact your vet. After a vet check, they
may recommend a dental procedure to
clean your pet’s teeth and to treat any
dental or gum disease. Unlike people
cats and dogs will not sit in a chair and
open their mouths for us to do these
procedures; they will require general
anaesthesia. Anaesthesia also allows for
tooth extractions and pain medications
are used in these circumstances.
Prevention is definitely better than
cure! There are several methods to help
keep your pet’s teeth and gums clean
and healthy. There are a variety of plaque
reducing foods, treats, chews and toys.
Every animal is different, consult your vet
on which combination of preventatives
would suit your pet best.
There is no substitute for regular
brushing, which is why we do it ourselves
to keep our teeth clean. Start early, pets
can start having their teeth brushed at
home, the younger they are the more
likely you’ll succeed. Start slowly and
gently, like all kinds of training. Reinforce
with rewards and praise.
There are specially designed pet
toothbrushes and finger brushes, or use a
baby toothbrush. Use pet toothpaste only
because toothpaste for people is not safe
for your pets to swallow. Begin by rubbing
your pet’s teeth and gums with a soft finger
brush, reward them and praise them when
they are at ease. Then start incorporating
the pet toothpaste and slowly increase the
number of seconds you brush their teeth.
Focusing on their teeth including the
gum line then work up to 30 seconds of
brushing for each side of the mouth at
least a few times a week. This takes time so
just do it gradually but if you should have
any concerns, contact your vet practice
and they will help you with the process.
Bear in mind that some pets just wouldn’t
tolerate brushing and this is where your
vet can recommend other alternatives as
mentioned above.

described as a Celtic/NZ Blues/Folk Band!

accompanists on guitar and bouzouki.

Owning a rental has been popular with
New Zealanders looking to diversify their
investment portfolio. Managing such
rentals has been less favoured and many
investors are opting to engage a specialist
property manager.
When choosing a property manager,
you will want one who ensures the rent
is collected on time and the home and
its grounds looked after. You will also
want one who is conversant with the
law surrounding rental properties and
problems that can arise.
For example, landlords are required by
law to ensure current and operable smoke
alarms are installed (long-life photoelectric
if no alarms previously). They will also
need to insulate their properties by 1st July
2019, and should observe their insurer’s
requirements like advising when a
property is vacant for an extended period
of time.
It is important to keep evidence of bond
payments and lodge these promptly with
Tenancy Services, holding tenancy details
such as tenant names, record of tenancy
and rent payments made. Reasonable
tenant requests should also be responded
to in a timely manner and the property
kept in a suitable condition with necessary
repairs and maintenance carried out.
Having a property manager makes all
these tasks easier and they can also sort
out any repairs or maintenance needed on
the property should you wish a hands-off
approach to renting.

WOOD BURNERS
When used properly, wood burners are a

Pellet fires have come a long way in recent
years and most are now available as
free-standing or inbuilt, offering a wider
variety when it comes to selecting the

There are many benefits to a pellet
burner as they offer all the warmth and
luxury of a flame without the hassle of
cutting, carrying and storing firewood.
Made from sawmill waste, the pellets are
carbon-neutral and burn cleanly.
One of the biggest limitations is the
initial cost, with the price of buying and
installing a pellet burner greater than
that of a conventional wood burner. The
burner also relies on electricity so won’t
work during a power cut.
