Sports, academia and nature at West Melton CROSS-country, basketball, trips to Kowhai Sanctuary and celebrating successful teachers has made for a busy time at West Melton School. About 30 year 4 to 8 pupils, also known as the Eco Warriors, along with a group of parents travelled to the school’s planting site, Kowhai Sanctuary, on Thompsons Rd. The purpose was to monitor last year’s plantings of natives as part of the Matariki celebrations carried out by the school’s year 3 and 4 team. Following an examination by the Eco Warriors, it was estimated about 90 per cent of the plants had survived. The pupils also tracked the number of birds and located different types of insects with Enviroschools Canterbury facilitator Matt Stanford and Te Ara Kakariki Kids Discovery Plantout programme coordinator Lou Drage. Meanwhile, the school entered two year 5 and year 6 teams into the Selwyn district basketball primary competition. In their first game, the school teams played each other.
