Call for dog park based in central city

Groups benefit from
travellers’ generosity

FOURTEEN COMMUNITY groups
and projects have collectively received
more than $25,000 to aid them with their
initiatives.
The money came partly from travellers
coming and going from Christchurch
Airport.
International and domestic travellers, as
well airport visitors, can put money in the
donation box.
Those donations are collected, converted
and put into the fund before the airport
tops it up with a large donation.
Last week’s recipients included CCS Disability
Action, to fund a free community
concert, Canterbury Charity Hospital for a
community garden, Learn Active towards
a vehicle to transport students to education
events, and Watch This Space, which is a
website that helps people locate street art in
the city.
International Track and Field Trust got
funding to buy a mobile pole vault run-up
for athletics meetings.
Canterbury Athletics coach Bill Boyd
said they hoped to use the run-up for athletics
events, such as The Big Shot, which
runs in the central city.
He said the funding would help attract
more people to the sport, which had
become more widely known since pole
vaulter Eliza McCartney won bronze at the
Rio Olympics last year.
“It just means the sport’s able to be
accessible and portable so we can run it
anywhere.”
Other recipients included Neighbourhood
Trust, Quilt Symposium, Phillipstown
Community Hub, Shakti Ethnic
Women’s Support, CoCA, Citizens Advice
Bureau, Home and Family Society and
Oxford Football Club.
Special Children’s Christmas Party,
which the airport has supported through
the fund over the last couple of years, was
also among the recipients.
Airport chief aeronautical and commercial
officer Justin Watson said there was a
record number of applicants for this round.
He said the fund aimed to support
groups and projects that made a tangible
difference in their community. The groups
and projects spoke passionately of the work
they did in their communities, he said.
Applications for funding from the grant
are open twice a year, and groups and projects
can apply for the funds.
