The Star Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday May 25 2017 43 Driven Holden Astra brings back the memories FREE WEEKLY MAGAZINE in stands every Friday Best Motorbuys TM OVER 1000 VEHICLES FOR SALE Below is a small selection of our great deals! To advertise in Best Motorbuys, phone Lea Godfrey 021 277 3086 • By Ross Kiddie I SAVED hard for my first ‘real’ car. It was something decent – a 1958 Holden to be exact. Even though it was roughly the same age as me, it provided a whole new world of satisfaction and independence. One of the first long journeys I took in that car was to my father’s Hawkes Bay business, one of many trips I took to Patoka. My father has long since passed away, and the Patoka General Store has recently burnt to the ground, the latter I found out when I drove there last month, ironically, in another Holden. The occasion was the media launch for Holden’s new Astra, and it included a drive deep into the Hawkes Bay hinterland. Even though it was a little sad to see huge changes in that remote settlement, the winding and hilly roads that lead into Patoka and Puketitiri are some of the best to drive on in New Zealand. I can report that the new Astra was at home in tight and twisty corners – and the range of models in the new series means there’s a trendy, European-sourced hatchback for all buyers and budgets. The range starts at $30,990 for a 1.4-litre manual and ends at $38,490 for a 1.6-litre RS-V automatic, the subject of this evaluation. In-between sits a 1.4-litre automatic and two 1.6-litre models in various specifications with manual or automatic transmission options. Interestingly, all new Astra variants have turbocharged engines, the RS-V is rated with 147kW and 300Nm. As a consequence, it is a feisty, vibrant model that encapsulates all of the ingredients we have experienced before in Astra. Astra has been a long-serving model lineup in New Zealand, but it has often flown under the radar, sitting in the shadow of its Koreansourced and Australianassembled Cruze. It’s no secret that Cruze is about to finish its life-cycle, the demise of Holden’s Australian manufacturing operation means HOLDEN ASTRA RS-V: Sporty profile. that Astra has big shoes to fill, and I’m of the belief it is a worthy replacement. So much so that I became quite smitten with the test car. It’s a combination of sporty appeal and all of the functionality you require when you are buying a modern five-door. Not only does it look the cat’s whiskers in terms of style, it has an interior which pampers the occupants and provides a comfortable, involving driving experience. For rear seat occupants there is a vast amount of head, leg and shoulder room. • Price – Holden Astra RS-V, $38,490 • Dimensions – Length, 4386mm; width, 2042mm; height, 1485mm • Configuration – Four-cylinder, frontwheel-drive, 1598cc, 147kW, 300Nm, sixspeed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 7.7.sec • Fuel usage – 6.3l/100km It also comes well equipped with what I believe to be value items for its price. Major features include full leather trim with heated front seats, heated steering wheel, satellite navigation, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control and speed limiter, and a full safety suite earning it a five-star rating. As mentioned, under bonnet sits a four-cylinder, turbo engine which displaces 1598cc. It is a honey in terms of refinement and it is hard to believe that it pumps out two-and-a-half times the power of my old FE which had almost an extra litre in displacement. That aside, manufacturers these days are using turbochargers as a technique, not so much to provide the power that we enjoy as drivers, but also as a mechanism to promote respectable fuel usage figures. Holden rate the 1.6-litre Astra with a 6.3-litre per 100km (45mpg) combined cycle average. That sits well with the trip computer readout during my time with the test car at 7.5l/100km (38mpg). Drive is channelled to the front wheels through a six-speed gearbox. There is a manual sequential function if you so desire to take control over the gearshift process, and sport modes, but left to its own devices there are sensible drive management protocols and gear ratios that allow for economy or performance if you like to feel the surge of turbocharged boost. In terms of acceleration, the Astra RS-V will scamper to 100km/h from a standstill in 7.7sec. On my home patch it cruised the long Canterbury straights quietly and competently, it felt well attached to the ground and has suspension which is compliant, soaking up bumps without being too firm, yet arresting body movement capably when presented with a quick corner. One of the most satisfying aspects about driving the Astra is the information the driver receives from the chassis mechanicals, it sits well balanced on the road and epitomises the European form of construction which mixes a sporty feel along with allroad comfort. As much as I enjoyed the RS-V, I relate strongly to a short drive I had in the manual 1.4-litre during the launch event. I know that manuals are certainly out of favour in the New Zealand new car market, but it is a real gem and is an entry point into a fine range of new product. $17,999 2007 Mini cooper s 6 speed, manual, minilight alloys, sports exhaust, keyless entry.
