Jimmy Barnes to spearhead Lincoln rock event

AN AUSTRALIAN rock icon
will set foot onto the Lincoln
Domain for one of the biggest
musical festivals in Selwyn next
year.
The Selwyn Sounds concert
is back with Jimmy Barnes to
headline the rock concert, along
with an iconic line-up of Australasian
groups. It will be held
on March 3.
Barnes will be joined by The
Feelers, Mental as Anything,
Stellar, The Mockers, The Narcs,
The Lady Killers and The Warratahs.
Organiser and Lincoln
resident David Parlane said the
line-up is sensational and he is
excited to have secured a class
act such as Barnes to headline
the show.
“We couldn’t do the same as
what we did this year, we had to
do something a little different
and make it bigger and better . . .
this year has got a little bit more
of a feel for everybody,” he said.
It was estimated more than
7500 packed into Lincoln Domain
for the inaugural concert
in March.

DELAYS IN resealing part of
Durham St is being partly caused
by a financial agreement between
Ōtākaro Ltd and contractor
Downer.
The Government agency said
yesterday Downer will not work
on the road until the ground
temperature rises above
10 deg C, which is unlikely to
happen before spring.
An Ōtākaro spokesman said
there was a risk the seal would
fail if the road was too cold.
If Ōtākaro ordered Downer to
seal the road anyway, in spite of
the cold weather, Ōtākaro would
have to bear the cost if the seal
failed and the road had to be
resurfaced, he said.
Under the current arrangement,
that risk is borne by
Downer.
Durham St is being upgraded
as part of the An Accessible City
project.
Work is still being done on the
footpath, planting and underground
services along Durham
St over winter.
Christchurch Central Business
Association chairman Brendan
Chase said the delay was incredibly
frustrating for business owners
in the area, as the traffic jams
and lost parking there could
drive away customers.
“It needs to be finished expeditiously,”
he said.
Some contractors are still
resealing roads in other parts of
the city, even over winter.
City council planning and delivery
transport manager Lynette
Ellis said each contract was assessed
on a “risk basis” to decide
if the work could go ahead.
If the risk was deemed low,
some work could be undertaken,
she said.
“It’s important to note there
are a number of variables that
impact this decision-making
process. It’s not a case of comparing
individual jobs, because
the specifications are all different,”
she said.
She said the standards were
set by the NZ Transport Agency.
According to an explanation
on the NZTA website, resealing
was best done in summer, when
warm temperature and dry air
helped the new seal stick.
“If we did the work in winter,
the cold ground would mean the
new surface would harden and
crack, plus the stones in the chip
seal could pop out if exposed to
cold weather within four weeks
of application,” it said.
