SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday June 20 2017 13 West Melton pupils hunt down clues in environmental challenge A LETTER hunt to celebrate the importance of trees has been held at West Melton School. The school celebrated Arbor Day recently with a “letter hunt” organised by the school’s year 4 to 8 pupils, known as the Eco- Warriors The hunt required pupils to work out various clues that led CHIEVERS to the location of a team of Eco-Warriors. At each point, the pupils gathered information and a letter about the role of sustainability in the environment. The word that had to be unjumbled from the letter hunt was “sustainable.” Meanwhile, the school’s intermediate pupils won a Canterbury inter-school science and PORTS TWELVE Rolleston School pupils will take on new leadership roles. The pupils went through a rigorous application process which included writing letters about why they should be chosen as leaders. They were then interviewed by principal Andrew Morrall, year 8 team-leader Annette Searle and year 7 teacher Keri Dekkers. Pupils Kimberley Jones, Mia Monteath, Sophie Ryall, Hannah Warman, Summer Ken- USINESSES ACHIEVERS technology competition. The competition, called the EPro8 Challenge, required all partaking pupils to build a robot dog, a mini bridge with traffic lights and a theme park ride. The school’s winning team was made up of pupils Max, Jed, James and Erza, while a girls’ SPORTS nedy, Emma Marshall, Jordan Cherry, Hazel Fairweather, Gideon Welford, Alex Blakie, James Elliott and Aaliyah Miller were chosen for the role. The emerging leaders are planning to bring in a litter-free trophy each week for the “tidiest team” in the school. It is not the only achievement the school has had, with pupils Levente Scott, Giovanni Cherubin, Shaun Neal and Abigail Hotton placing third in the science and technology challenge, EPro8. BUSINESSES NATURE: West Melton School pupils learn about the environment as part of Arbor Day. team, made up of Ella, Phoenix, Maddi and Aidriahna, came second. A team of year 5 and 6 pupils also took part coming forth place. All teams will now take part in the semi-finals later this month. SCHOOL New entrants SCHOOL BIG DAY: West Melton School also has welcomed three new pupils to its school with Ella joining the school’s Totara Community for year four to six, while Tyler and Jayden have joined the school’s Kowhai Community for new entrants.
