SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday June 20 2017 15 Waihora tip-up champions • By Gordon Findlater WAIHORA HAVE tuned the tides on recent Combined Country champions Southbridge with a 29-24 win just a fortnight after they lost to their rivals. They went down to Southbridge 25-31 in last month’s Combined Country semi-final. Southbridge may have had a case of a championship hangover with Waihora dominating play in the opening 40min to lead 24-7. “We were really impressive to begin the match. They played a few different combinations but I was really happy with how we played,’’ said Waihora coach Joff Moore. The visitors rolled the changes after the break and the momentum turned immediately as Southbridge roared into life to take the game down to the wire. One try to Waihora in the second half was the difference as they hung onto win 29-24. Waihora are well and truly in the play-off race for the Ellesmere title with just one loss to their name through five games. They will hope to record bonus point wins in their next fixtures against West Melton and Rolleston, before hosting local rivals Lincoln. “We have a bye in the final week but that’s not a bad thing after what should be a big game with Lincoln,” said Moore. GRUDGE MATCH: Waihora got one over rivals Southbridge at the weekend, just a fortnight after being defeated by them in the Combined Country final.
