She has been particularly active and successful in fostering relationships with sponsors who are a key component of the financial viability of the club. A recent initiative she has promoted is a sponsors’ tournament which is now held annually to reward and recognise sponsors at the club. Marie has also been instrumental in promoting and implementing a tree replantment programme to improve the course and the development of a strategic capital expenditure programme. Narrow defeat for Lincoln • By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN Combined suffered the narrowest of defeats to Shirley Boys’ High School 15-17 and now face a tough run into the school holiday break. They travel north to play Waimea Combined in their next UC Championship match this weekend before hosting Christ’s College the following week in their final match before the break. An unconverted try was the only thing to separate Lincoln and Shirley Boys. Lincoln trailed 0-10 at the halftime break, but didn’t take long to fire up in the second half, scoring their first try just 5min in. First-five Josh Davidson broke the Shirley defensive line with some silky footwork just outside the 22m line before putting through halfback Logan Crofts for their opening try. The effort was converted by centre Brett Gillan to narrow the gap to 7-10. Shirley re-established their 10-point lead shortly after with a converted try. With less than 10min to play, Lincoln found themselves camped on the Shirley 5m line. Replacement prop Cameron Jordan looked to be the hero for his side picking up the ball at the ruck and crashing over the line. However, Gillan was unable to convert the try and found themselves trailing 15-17 with just minutes remaining. Shirley Boys were able to hold their nerve and see out the tightest of victories. PROP: Cameron Jackson scored for Lincoln with less than 10min to play to give them a sniff of victory. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER HEAT PUMP SALE NOW ON!
