The best way to heat a home depends on its age and construction. As up to a third of household energy goes on heating, insulating an older home is a starting point. All homes require heating on dull cold days however, insulated double glazed homes hold heat in for longer and those built to the sun capitalise on free energy. Aim for a healthy comfortable temperature with no chill in the air, avoiding over-heating that leads to the need to peel off clothes, and unnecessary electricity expenditure. Electricity, gas, solar, pellet and log fires are all potential heating sources. A log fire is economical if there is a supply of affordable dry wood while heat pumps are the most cost effective while gas fires add ambience. Unflued gas heaters are the most expensive. Underfloor heating feels great. It is more efficient if people spend time at home though it will translate to larger power bills. As it takes time to heat up, it is usually left on which can make the house uncomfortably hot on a sunny day. Centrally heating can also be effective. Pipes or ducts might be used to feed warm air throughout the home or from a log burner. Ceiling fans are also good for circulating warm air within a room. Central or water solar heating utilises the sun’s free energy with the latter more cost effective, however, with new storage batteries coming onto the market, solar power may be a real alternative soon. Portable heaters also have their place, quickly heating a room or eliminating the chill in a bedroom. Fan heaters warm the air but are less effective than column or radiant heaters that warm objects holding heat in a room for longer. Using heaters with a timer also allows temperature control avoiding wasting power and meaning they are safer with children. Central heating or ceiling mounted heat pumps can circulate warm air around the home. Log fires are economical where a supply of affordable dry wood. Gas fires add ambience.
