Playing on their home turf, Prebbleton came out firing in their 22-17 win over rivals Lincoln. “It was a great day at the club with our sponsors day going on and we knew if we put a good performance on the paddock we’d be a good chance,” said Prebbleton coach Derek Todd. Tries to Richard Ferguson, Todd Henderson and Tim Murgatroyd gave them a 17-0 lead at half-time. Lincoln answered back in the second half with two tries, reducing the gap to five points. The decisive moment in the match took place 15min before full-time when Prebbleton halfback Guy Murgatroyd produced a moment of individual brilliance. Murgatroyd ran around the back of a lineout from 40m out and escaped the Lincoln defence before running in a try which took the score to 22-12. Lincoln went onto score a consolation try which earned them a bonus point on full-time. Prebbleton lock Greg Mitchell was awarded the man of the match award. “He was colossal in the lineout, his defence was sound and his ball carries were damaging. He had an outstanding game,” said Todd. The win was also crucial in the context of the Ellesmere competition. With Lincoln occupying fourth position coming into the game a win was required to keep Prebbleton’s semi-final hopes alive. They face West Melton and Southbridge in their final two games. The team came into the season with three major goals. They achieved the first goal by making the top eight of the combined country competition for the first time since 2008. Next on the list is to qualify for the top four in the Ellesmere competition. The third objective is to win four of their five interclub trophies.
