Malcolm originally heard about the car from a friend in the United States, where it was advertised for sale. “The American economy had crashed so the owner who was a builder may have been short of funds,” explains Malcolm. After some negotiation, the car was on its way to New Zealand. The Chevelle had been geared up for street racing and only raced once however, it meant that some parts had to be removed before the vehicle was shipped. “The front wheels almost came off the ground and it was drinking fuel. The first time I drove it to Oamaru to show my family I had to fuel up by the time I reached Ashburton with it taking five tanks of petrol, there and back,” explains Malcolm. “You could smell the fuel, it was running so rich.” With the car geared up to deliver as much fuel and power as possible for street racing, some changes were needed. The vehicle was tuned down which improved fuel consumption. On a trip south, the car only needs filling up when Malcolm gets to the south side of Timaru. Malcolm also replaced the suspension and spent a good $25,000 improving the car, with pretty much everything under the hood and floor brand new, resulting in a value that is now considerably more, especially given that few Chevelles come up for sale these days. He says the mechanical side of the Chevelle is very sound. It has plenty of power, having been worked on by mechanics who specialise in American muscle cars with the result that it is a very nice runner, though Malcolm confesses to having been through some tyres. Chevelles had a 396 Chevrolet big block motor, which is in fact a 402 cubic inch Jones Road Auto 7,000cc 7 litre motor put in. It also has a Holley 800carburettor. Malcolm has kept the Chevelle as original as possible with the only aftermark a stereo and Mag wheels alternating between the statutory Mags and Foose Legends, which his children think look cool. “Car enthusiasts who see the 396 plate on the rear diff and cut off valves below the manifold comment on this,” says Malcolm who loves the power and drag capacity of the car. Unfortunately, Malcolm had a life threatening Jet Ski accident five years ago and while he made a remarkable recovery, has had little time to travel far in his Chevelle so it has only done 1,500 kilometres on New Zealand roads and he must now part with it. He says there are some hidden goodies that make the engine really powerful and the car fun to drive, especially the ability to open up the pipes and power off other high performance vehicles. “I stop at service stations and people come up and ask if they can take a photo of the car,” says Malcolm.
