Ellesmere win back PHOTOS: KAREN CASEY • By Gordon Findlater ELLESMERE HAVE reclaimed the Southbridge Shield after defeating North Canterbury 35-20 in Kaiapoi. North Canterbury made the brighter start and Ellesmere found themselves trailing 6-17 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half. In what proved the most influential stage of the game, Ellesmere put the bit between their teeth and scored two late tries through Jale Masi and Tim Murgatroyd to take an 18-17 advantage at the break. “The boys were able to recognise what was happening and made a couple of changes which enabled us to turn things around,” said Ellesmere coach Alex Robertson. Ellesmere showed their dominance in the second 40 with both Keiran Meikle and Mark Maitland crossing the line, while North Canterbury were held try less. “Trust was the biggest thing that helped us win the game. The players trusted and kept faith in the systems they put in place,” said Robertson. The team celebrated the victory where their day had begun, returning to the Golden Mile Tavern in Templeton where they held a team breakfast before the trip. The Ellesmere players will now turn their attention to the club competition with one round remaining before the play-offs. The top four have already been decided but there is plenty to play for with home advantage in the play-offs on the line. Competition leader Waihora have a bye, which will give Southbridge the chance to secure the top qualifier spot if they can defeat fourth placed Prebbleton. Third placed Darfield will look to secure a home semi-final with a bonus point win when they head to Rolleston. Results Seniors – Southbridge Shield Ellesmere 35, North Canterbury 20.
