Southbridge Primary ditches chocolate for produce bags SOUTHBRIDGE Primary School has changed the way it fundraises for projects in a bid to support the environment. Chocolate bars have been dropped for selling brightly coloured reusable produce bags as a new way of fundraising. Southbridge teacher aid Carrie Jones-Dakers said she is excited about fundraising money in a different way while benefiting the environment. “If we can teach our children to reduce, or even eliminate, plastic usage, then it will help the environment hugely and benefit them and the planet when they are older,” she said. The Rubbish Whisperer has sold more than 13,500 reusable bags across New Zealand and was formed in 2013 by Helen Rupp. Lincoln students show off big brains A LINCOLN High School student has won a of an Otago University medical competition about how the brain works. Year 11 student Alan Li has been selected to travel to Sydney in December to take part in the Australian Brain Bee Challenge after winning the New Zealand equivalent. Alan took out the New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge individual question round against 88 other South Island high school students. Alan and fellow Lincoln student Maria Nieto Mendoza made it into the final seven competitors before he took the top prize.
