Lucky escape as photos of flood surface

A MAN has had a lucky escape 

after he narrowly got out of his 

car before it was washed down 

the raging Selwyn River. 

Images have surfaced of the car 

swamped in water after a man, 

new to the area, attempted to 

drive across the Glendore Stream, 

off Riversleigh Rd, Whitecliffs, 

during the recent torrential 

downpours. 

Senior Constable Andy Grant 

said the car was swept about 

50m downstream to opposite the 

Whitecliffs township. 

Police were made aware of the 

incident about three hours later, 

after a farmer noticed the car and 

had concerns someone may have 

been trapped. 

Senior Constable Grant said 

the driver managed to walk away 

from the car before it was washed 

downstream. 

He said the big message is if 

there is a heavy downpour, stay 

out of rivers and fords. 

“If you approach a ford in 

heavy rain stop, go slowly, get 

out and do an assessment of how 

much water is in the ford before 

you decide to driver through it,” 

he said. 

The car has since been pulled 

out of the Selwyn River by the 

Whitecliffs farmer using a tractor.

Residents fire up over 

pet cremation noise

A HUM from furnaces 

operating at a pet crematorium 

up to six hours a day is upsetting 

residents living nearby. 

A public meeting between 

concerned residents, the district 

council and Environment Canterbury 

will be on Monday over 

the operation of Fond Farewells 

Pet Cremation Service in Lincoln. 

A meeting was first held in 

June over concerns with about 30 

residents showing up. 

It comes after a non-notified 

decision was made by the district 

council for Gribbles Veterinary 

Pathology Ltd to redevelop its 

site based at Marion Pl in 2015. 

The district council’s environmental 

services manager Tim 

Harris said the resource consent 

was granted without consultation 

because it found adverse 

effects on neighbours were “less 

than minor.” 

But resident Bob Tomkins, 

who lives in Armil Pl behind the 

pet cremation said the burners 

operate at such a low frequency 

even grade five earmuffs cannot 

mute the sound. 

He said all affected residents 

should have been informed of 

the development and had the 

right to object.

A SOLUTION possibly to the 

chronic traffic congestion that the 

Halswell Junction Rd and Springs 

Rd roundabout causes. 

If you don’t get away to work 

early, getting through the roundabout 

and onto the Southern 

Motorway means a 15min or so 

backlog to Prebbleton. 

This has been happening for a 

long time now and will get worse 

as the motorway extension work 

kicks up another gear. 

So the powers that be will 

install a traffic signal (see page 3) 

at the roundabout to combat the 

2km of traffic that backs up on 

weekdays. 

Once you get to the roundabout 

it’s a game of dodgems getting 

across and around into the motorway 

flow. 

That can be exciting, or fearful, 

depending on what kind of person 

you are behind the wheel.

once they are at the roundabout,” 

Ms Wright said. 

Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall 

said he was delighted that the 

intersection will be improved. 

“I’m pleased for our 

community that the transport 

agency is pro-actively providing 

a solution to what has become 

a frustrating intersection on 

our local roading network. 

This change will make a real 

difference to commuters.” 

The project it set to cost 

around $150,000. 

TAI TAPU TOILET SIGNS 

The need for a new sign to direct 

people to the public toilets in Tai 

Tapu is still yet to be addressed. 

The district council told Selwyn 

Times in July a new sign directing 

people to the toilets would 

be installed at the intersection of 

Rhodes Rd and Old Tai Tapu Rd 

this month. The district council’s 

roading manager Mark Chamberlain 

said the sign would be 

installed by Thursday. 

XMAS IN THE PARK RETURN 

Darfield’s Country Christmas 

in the Park may return but on a 

smaller scale. It’s been two years 

since Darfield last had a Country 

Christmas in the Park. While 

interest has been put forward to 

help run the event, it is likely to 

be smaller and called Picnic in the 

Park. Malvern Community Board 

chairwoman Jenny Gallagher said 

she had discussed holding the 

event with the Darfield Township 

Committee. It comes after she 

received an email from a resident 

saying they would like to run 

Christmas in the Park this year. 

The community board discussed 

taking the event forward at its 

meeting last night.

Young people love having a say, 

and we well and truly proved this 

at the first ever ‘“What do 

YOUth think” events drawing 

huge crowds. 

These were run by the Selwyn 

Youth Council, a group of 11 

young people from around the 

district. 

The events took place at Ellesmere 

College and Darfield High 

School earlier this month. 

It was through this accessible 

platform we collated the voices 

and opinions of passionate young 

people. 

A focus for the youth council 

this year has been youth well-being, 

with the theme of this event 

based around public transport in 

Selwyn. 

This is something we believe 

helps reduce isolation in rural 

communities, and a reliance on 

parents. 

It is a solution for young and 

old, with senior citizens, those 

with disabilities and people looking 

for a more eco-friendly travel 

solution invited to take part in 

our trial. 

The need for public transport 

in townships across Selwyn particularly 

Leeston, Darfield and 

surrounding townships was evident 

for us as youth councillors. 

We decided to go out and see 

what young people thought of 

this issue and our plan to do 

something about it. 

Our solution is a project called 

“Selwyn Link” which is a trial 

bus service in future school 

holidays, connecting Leeston, 

Darfield, and surrounding townships 

with Rolleston. 

Enabling all members of our 

community to go for a swim, 

catch up with friends or head 

into town using the Metro bus 

service. 

The aim of this trial is to collect 

further data and feedback 

to gauge the need for public 

transport, which we will then 

take to the district council and 

Environment Canterbury. 

We connected with 121 

young people over the lunch 

hour at Ellesmere College, each 

filling in surveys – until we ran 

out. 

A further 198 students filled in 

surveys at the Darfield event. 

Feedback was once again 

overwhelmingly positive and 

supportive of the idea. 

It is a definite work in progress, 

but we are excited to start making 

an impact on a relevant topic 

we believe needs to be improved 

upon, not only for young people 

– but for all members of our 

community.

thoughts and get in touch with 

us about this idea.

about our recently established 

discretionary fund. 

The fund is available to provide 

support for groups or individuals 

whose projects, events or activities

excluding GST available to distribute 

over 2017/18.

keep updated on our recruitment 

drive for new council members 

aged between 14 and 24, taking 

place in November.

seriously trying to say that in 

those suburbs are all owned by 

the occupants and not a single 

one is rented? There’s not a lot 

of difference between a normal 

house being rented and this 

one. I mean as they have stated, 

there’s no noise or party issues 

so what’s the problem.

be, like the people who move to 

the country then moan about 

how a farm smells. Seriously, if 

you don’t like what makes up 

an area, don’t move there.

rented to tenants who are paying 

rent and looking after your 

property. Some people just need

of people seem to be missing 

the point. It’s not that the 

house is untidy or noisy . . . 

it’s the use and classification 

of the building and consents 

required when building. The 

neighbours bought there first 

before this one was built. And 

as owners stated they would 

have bought elsewhere with the 

knowledge of such a dwelling

for homeless people. Did you 

ever think that just maybe those 

people who rent that property 

are just trying to get on with 

their life and actually think your 

homes are awful.

It’s sad people are so conceited 

that they don’t appreciate good 

neighbours regardless of whether 

they rent or own. Rentals that are 

looked after and home-respectful 

tenants are of no one’s concern 

but the landlord and certainly 

shouldn’t be harassed in this 

way by neighbours or council 

members.

they say there have been no noise 

complaints, will never be a party 

house, landscaping is booked

polite. Can guarantee they’d be 

hard-pressed to find any area

about the construction of a 

new bridge at Liffey Stream 

In correspondence from the 

district council to neighbouring 

residents of the Liffey Stream 

at Ryelands Drive in Lincoln in 

July, I note the intention to construct 

a pedestrian bridge from 

the walkway between 7 and 9 

Ryelands Drive to the land at the 

temporary (one to two years) satellite 

school site (the old Lincoln 

Club site). 

Considering that there two 

footbridges both within 200m 

(one upstream and one downstream) 

of the proposed new 

bridge site, this proposed new 

bridge must surely be a total 

waste of the estimated cost of 

$110,000. 

I also note the support of the 

Lincoln Community Committee 

for this gross waste of ratepayers 

money in the comment by them 

“very supportive of the overall 

aim to increase connectivity 

between the two sides of the 

esplanade, better linking existing 

pathways on both sides of the 

waterway.” 

Perhaps the community 

committee could explain to the 

community how this bridge will 

perform this duty in a better way 

than the two existing bridges that 

also connect both sides of the 

stream and especially the bridge 

from Kildare Tce to Leinster Tce 

and the short walk via the Moffat 

Drive walkway to the esplanade 

on the temporary school site to 

the point where this proposed 

new bridge would end. 

The Lincoln Community 

Committee must surely have 

some knowledge of the benefits 

of this proposed new bridge and 

its costs that I can’t see – perhaps 

they may wish to share them 

with the community.

The initiative for a new bridge 

came from the district council 

wanting to provide safer and 

more direct access from the western 

side of the Liffey/Millpond to 

the eastern side where the reserve 

is. 

Also to where the primary 

school is currently occupying the 

former Ellesmere Country Club 

site and building. 

The LCC did not suggest the 

bridge, but does support it, and 

they hope to see the grass and 

Reserve Flow with New Bridge 

tree green space on the eastern 

side retained as a public reserve. 

The LCC also hopes to see 

the former Ellesmere Country 

Club building retained in public 

ownership for the benefit of the 

district, and the Lincoln community, 

when it is converted into 

an arts and culture centre for 

eastern Selwyn. 

The new bridge will enable 

better accessibility to the public 

reserve areas bordering the Liffey 

and Millpond, which are not 

currently easily accessed because 

of developments, land ownership

and steep messy banks. 

The community currently 

needs to take a considerable 

detour regardless of where the 

existing bridges are. 

The new bridge does provide a 

link between the south side of the 

Liffey and the north rather than 

just being an east to west bank 

link or just there for the school. 

The ability to walk the length 

of the reserve would be the biggest 

benefit. 

This is best shown by the illustration 

of the route with the 

bridge in place. 

New bridge (marked in cyan) gives clear access between Rylands 

and the Millstream play area, gives direct access to the school and 

more importantly, creates an almost uninterrupted walk down the 

length of The Liffey Reserve.

Council rules on car parks 

THE DISTRICT council 

says a new business in 

Lincoln does not have 

exclusive rights to use 12 

parallel car parks outside 

its premises. 

The district council 

and Black Door Bar and 

Eatery have been in dispute 

since June over usage of 

the car parks in Robert 

St. The business put up

shutting down if it cannot 

find enough volunteers. 

The Selwyn Times first 

reported in May the 

Springston Secret Garden 

was in need of more volunteers 

to keep it going. 

The garden has since had 

two volunteers come to 

help at the weekends, along 

with another who took 

over the co-ordinator role 

for garden activities involving 

Springston School. 

But Springston Environmental 

Community 

Committee chairwoman 

Sue Jarvis said their coordinator 

has since had to 

resign due to ill health. 

“We are looking for 

another co-ordinator who 

wheel clamping and tow 

away signs covering the 

car parks shortly before 

it opened. At the time the 

district council said the 

signs were not enforceable.

manager Tim Harris: “We 

have reiterated to the owners 

of the Black Door Bar and 

Eatery the council’s view 

is available during the day 

time,” she said. 

The “secret garden”, 

which backs on to 

Springston School was given 

its name by the pupils.

school to teach pupils how 

to grow and use healthy

available to everyone. We

not planning any further

Career in the printing industry helps 

Shelley Bakker, 52, has been involved in the printing industry for more than 

30 years. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding about her passion for 

wearable art and helping the Prebbleton community

Tell me about how you came 

to be involved with printing? 

I have been in the printing 

trade since I left school. I initially 

got a job in printing but not an 

apprenticeship, even though 

I was still working within the 

trade. It took me six years to get 

an apprenticeship. I was the first 

female ever in New Zealand to 

get the highest practical marks at 

Auckland University of Technology 

for a printing apprentice. I 

was about 21. I have also entered 

a competition for a female apprentice 

for a non-traditional 

role and got second out of New 

Zealand. 

How did the home business 

start? 

When my second child was 

two and a half, I thought I had 

a little bit of time – obviously, I 

had a nappy brain. So I started 

printing from home. I have been 

doing it ever since and my son 

is going to be 18 next month in 

a couple of weeks. My business 

is called Bakkerprint. We print 

newsletters, cards, posters. 

Because I am artistic, I do the 

design side as well. I do menus, 

I do art post cards and greeting 

cards. 

How were you first treated 

when you started working in 

the industry? 

They told me to get an apprenticeship, 

I needed university entrance. 

I went back to school and 

did that for another year. I ended 

up getting a job through a friend 

of a family. I left school when I 

was 18 and I was 52 on Friday. I 

have been printing all that time 

but I have been printing at home 

for 16 years since 2001. 

The printing industry has 

changed a lot. What are your 

thoughts with all the new technology? 

I have changed with technology 

and I love it. I love my 

recycling, but I also love my 

technology, and it helps with my 

work. 

Obviously the printing from 

home idea has been a success? 

I still do it. It is good to work 

around the kids and family. It is a 

passion of mine. I love to collect 

old books. I do the Prebbleton 

Community Association 

newsletter. I have been involved 

in the association since 2010. 

I have actually been doing a 

lot more other stuff like the 

Prebbleton Community Market 

and organising the Christmas 

carols for this year. I also have a 

mad passion for recycling. 

What are some of the 

recycling projects you have 

done? 

I have taken part in wearable 

arts shows. For the Westport 

Wearable Arts competition 

I did last year in July called 

Earthworks of Creation, all the 

materials I used were recycled. 

My costume was called ‘Maltilda 

Fuggle’. I originally made it for 

A Mid-Winter’s Ale Festival in 

Rolleston last year. The dress 

got second in the competition. 

I entered World of Wearable 

Art this year but didn’t get in. 

My entry this year was called 

Menopausal. It was made out 

of paper mache and the head 

piece was a very old fashioned 

lampshade with different faces of 

menopause on it.

Was there a reason you 

decided to go with the 

menopausal theme? 

Probably my age. It is very 

good for stress relief. I do a 

lot of other recycling. I have 

started making supermarket 

bags because I get sick of 

having to recycle bags and then 

forgetting to take them into 

the supermarket. One of my 

favourite places is at the EcoShed 

on Blenheim Rd. I have been 

making supermarket bags out of 

old beach shades. 

How did you get into 

wearable art? 

I took up running in 2013. My 

first long event was Rail Trail 

Rampage from Motukarara to 

Little River. I did it as a ninja 

turtle. Since then, I have done 

other events including the 

Buller Gorge Marathon. My 

motto is: I run like a turtle 

running through peanut 

butter. I may be slow but finish 

strong so my nickname is Turtle 

Shell. From there, I started 

my love of creating wearable 

materials. 

What work have you 

done to get the Prebbleton 

Market going? 

I started the market last 

October. There used to be an 

older market a few years ago. 

Apparently it hadn’t been going 

for a couple of years. I said I can 

do that. I did a lot of research 

on the timing of it. The old 

one used to be on a Saturday 

morning. I made this one the 

first Sunday of the month. 

We have live entertainment, 

free face-painting – it is a nice 

community atmosphere around 

the Prebbleton Community 

Cottage. 

Was it a lot of work when you 

first started co-ordinating the 

market? 

I spent a lot of time promoting 

it to make it as free as I can. It 

took a lot of time. The money 

we make from the stall-holders 

and the market, we give back to 

the community. Four months 

ago, we donated $460 back to 

community groups. It is all about 

community and giving back, 

rather than a money-making 

venture.

Is Prebbleton a close-knit 

community? 

That is why I do the Prebbleton 

Market. The community has 

grown so much since the 

earthquake – it has spread out 

a lot. 

I hear you’re bringing 

Christmas carols to the 

Prebbleton Community Cottage? 

Around the cottage, it is in the 

same place as the market. It is a 

lovely atmosphere. We have got 

a brass band and we are hoping 

to have a night market, as well 

as the carols. It will be outside 

weather permitting. 

Where did you meet your 

husband? 

I met my husband when I 

was 30 I think. It was after 

many years of my aunt telling 

me I should meet this guy and 

for years I said no. Finally, I 

bit the bullet and I did. He is a 

mechanic. They are contractors 

for a breakdown service. It 

is an AA battery service. We 

have been doing it for 10 years. 

We both used to go out and 

cover Christchurch. That was 

in between my work. I was 

studying batteries as well. I had 

three brothers and I was very 

mechanically-minded and I have 

always been a bit of a tom-boy 

really. When I was looking at 

leaving school, I thought I would 

either do that or some kind of 

engineering. I liked photography 

and I thought I would go the way 

of printing. I tend to be a little bit 

rebellious. If there is something 

you are passionate about, try 

your hardest to make it work and 

make your passion your job and 

you will never work because you 

will enjoy it, which is what I have 

done.

Consummate performer Jan Bolwell 

plays her adolescent self, trying to get 

her grandfather Arthur to talk about 

his war. After much pestering, he 

succumbs. 

What follows is a gripping, painful and 

sometimes hilarious tale of a young 

Kiwi soldier from the Otago Mounted 

Rifles (one of Bill Massey’s Tourists) who 

with his mate Cyril, survives the terrible 

tragedy of Passchendaele. 

The play is enlivened with dance 

sequences set to amusing and original 

WW1 soldiers’ ditties and First World 

War poems.

During the July floods two 

men in a four-wheel-drive were 

swept about 100m downstream 

in a wild torrent of water from 

a ford off Greendale Rd in 

Darfield. 

The two men managed to 

exit onto the roof of the vehicle 

and scrambled up a pine tree 

before police, ambulance and 

fire services arrived.

at about midnight on July 

23.

completed on Gerald St. 

Mr Tomkins’ wife Joanne 

is terminally ill with a 

rare heart-lung condition 

called pulmonary arterial hypertension, 

meaning her heart 

is twice as large as it should be 

and she is in need of a double 

lung and heart transplant. 

A recent visit to a specialist 

found Mrs Tomkin’s condition 

had progressed by 18 months 

and were told the likely cause 

was stress and a lack of sleep. 

“She just can’t sleep and the 

stress is killing her,” Mr Tomkins 

said. 

Mrs Tomkins said the noise 

gets to the point where you 

cannot leave your doors open 

because can be heard from the 

other end of the house. 

Residents would like to see 

the business moved to an alternative 

site. 

But Mr Harris said the 

business has a valid resource 

consent to be there. 

The crematorium has been 

operated by Gribbles Veterinary 

since 1986. 

It originally operated as an 

incinerator room, a component 

of agricultural research activities 

historically undertaken on 

the site by the former Ministry 

of Agriculture and Fisheries. 

The new development has 

two furnaces, a preparation 

room, a storage room, car 

parking space and reception 

and memorial rooms. 

Gribbles Veterinary general 

manager James Richardson 

said its location which was 

previously situated in a paddock, 

has now been met on 

the boundary of residential 

dwellings. 

He said in the past 18 

months the business had undertaken 

building and furnace 

upgrades to ensure its services 

have low-impact on the environment 

and its neighbours. 

Under the district plan the 

location of the pet crematorium 

falls under Business 3 

Zone and limits the noise to 

55dBA between 7.30am-8pm. 

The decision to allow the 

development to go ahead 

restricted the operation hours 

from 6.30am-5pm, Monday to 

Friday and 6.30am to 2.30pm 

on Saturdays. 

Residents had concerns over 

why a new a resource consent 

to operate the burners was not 

granted from ECan. The most 

recent resource consent was 

granted from ECan in 2003. 

A ECan spokeswoman said 

the consent covers the redevelopment.

DARFIELD HIGH School 

completed a clean sweep on 

Saturday when they won the 

Canterbury secondary schools 

one-day horse trials at McLeans 

Island. 

The win came on the back 

of victories in the Canterbury 

secondary schools show jumping 

and dressage competitions earlier 

in the year. It is the first time 

Darfield has won all three titles 

in the same year.

schools competed in the Primary 

Sports Canterbury winter 

tournament held last Thursday. 

More than 1700 pupils in 171 

teams from 87 schools around 

Canterbury came together to 

play netball, hockey, football and 

rugby at South Hagley Park and 

English Park. 

Rolleston School won the 

senior rugby title after beating 

Hillview Christian in the final.

Don’t forget to 

buckle up! 

Over the last three years in Canterbury car crashes have caused the deaths of 26 people who 

weren’t wearing their seatbelt. This is over a third of all fatalities during this period. 

If you are involved in a crash, wearing a seatbelt dramatically reduces the risk of drivers and 

passengers receiving fatal or serious injury. 

It’s important to ensure you are not seated too close to the steering wheel or dashboard, as in 

a crash, your seatbelt and airbag needs time and room to do its job. Many people, unaware of 

the physics of an impact, feel safer sitting close to the steering wheel or dashboard, putting 

themselves at greater risk. 

Remember, the driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 15 years old wear seatbelts 

or are in an approved restraint. If you don’t wear a seatbelt or you allow a person under 15 years 

to travel unrestrained, you could face a fine of $150 for each belt not worn. People 15 years and 

older are responsible for their own fine. 

Police see the non-use of seatbelts as a serious issue and will be strictly enforcing this in 

Selwyn district.

Explore Selwyn – Otira Valley Walk 

On your way through Arthur’s Pass? 

There’s a short scenic walk nestled amongst the mountains just west of the Arthur’s Pass Township. Otira 

Valley walk is a relatively easy graded track that follows up a deep alpine valley on the northern side of Mt 

Rolleston. The track winds through the valley to the Otira River then runs alongside the river. The alpine 

birds and gentle river flow create a tranquil atmosphere with a stunning view of the towering alps. 

The track climbs over an old glacial moraine, then follows the 

contour through subalpine scrub and tussock to the Otira River 

foot-bridge. Melted ice and snow trickle down the mountains 

creating mini waterfalls along the track. 

The track is relatively level but a few small streams to cross and 

some large rocks to step up onto make the track interesting and 

enjoyable to navigate.

Warning: The track finishes at the foot-bridge. Travel past this point 

requires map reading and route finding skills. For experienced alpine 

trampers and mountaineers only. This track is subject to avalanche 

hazard in winter so it is not recommend going past this point in winter. 

Time/Distance: 45 minutes 

one way. 

Difficulty: Easy. Not suitable 

for buggies or wheelchairs. 

How to get there: The track 

starts at the Otira valley car 

park just west of the Arthur’s 

Pass township. Located 1 hour 

45 minutes from Rolleston or 1 

hour 25 minutes from Darfield. 

Dogs not permitted. 

Reduce your waste at home 

Council is sponsoring two waste-free workshops next month. These 

workshops will be hosted by Kiwi mum Kate Meads. 

In the first workshop, Waste Free Parenting, Kate will teach you 

exciting and inspiring ways to minimise waste, while introducing you 

to modern sustainable products for use in the home. 

The workshop will show you lots of ways you can reduce waste at 

home, show the environmental impact of the choices you make and 

dispel the myths about what happens to your waste. 

Kate is also hosting another workshop called Food Lovers 

Masterclass. This is a session focusing on education around ways 

to reduce food waste when cooking and preparing meals. 

Kate admits she wasn’t always the waste free person she is now. 

“I used to be the ultimate consumer and master waste producer. 

Since having my son Daniel in 2005 I have since become a waste 

free parenting warrior – promoting waste free alternatives for lots of 

different products including nappies,” Kate says. 

“Often we believe we need to change everything to make a 

difference, in the long term this is true but in the short term it seems 

too hard. What we forget is that if we all just make a small seemingly 

insignificant change every day the results will be hugely significant.” 

Every year the average New Zealand family throws away three 

shopping trolleys worth of food, Kate will talk about how you can 

stop wasting money and creating unnecessary waste. 

The workshops are being held on Saturday 16 September at the 

Lincoln Event Centre with the first session from 10am–12.30pm 

and the second 5.30–7.30pm. Tickets are $25 each or for a couple.

Osbornes Drain – a holistic 

approach to water management 

The Osbornes Catchment Management Working party has reached 

a significant milestone to improve water quality in the Osbornes 

Drain catchment. 

At a recent meeting held at Council Headquarters, the working party 

celebrated the successful granting in February 2017 of a resource 

consent for the land drainage discharge from Osbornes Drain. The 

Selwyn District Council holds the consent. 

Council Asset Manager Water Services Murray England says 

an exciting process has now begun to ensure the sustainable 

management of the catchment and drainage system. 

“Council is working together with Environment Canterbury, Te 

Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Te Taumutu Rūnanga, Wairewa Rūnanga, The 

Department of Conservation, and Osbornes Drainage Committee to 

ensure sustainable catchment and drainage management,” he says. 

“This type of management of the drain allows the group to 

progressively identify issues, provide interventions, monitor and 

adapt, to achieve the required water quality outcomes.” 

The Osborne Catchment Management Working party’s key objectives 

for the management of Osbornes Drain: 

· The protection and enhancement of attributes which contribute to 

the values of both Ngāi Tahu and DOC in the network and from the 

pump station discharge 

· The improvement of water quality and ecosystem health in 

the catchment and in particular in both the network and 

receiving environment 

· Restore the mana of the wetland and drainage system 

downstream of the pump station 

· The avoidance of erosion and the effects of sediment discharge 

· The reduction of the adverse effects of flooding 

· Efficient and effective drainage system which facilitates 

sustainable farming practices.

south of Minchins Road. The closure is scheduled for a maximum of three days, but is likely to be 

completed sooner. A detour will be available via Minchins Road and Old West Coast Road, with 

access across the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge still available at all times.

Senior A Netball 

The Ellesmere College Senior 

A Netball team is currently 

fundraising to allow us to travel 

to and compete in the 2017 

South Island Secondary Schools 

Tournament. 

Our team currently play in 

the premier school netball 

competition in Christchurch 

where on a Wednesday the 

team competes in the Super 

Net Reserve grade. This is an 

invaluable experience for us 

to have preceding to the time 

of the tournament and allows 

us to build combinations and 

develop as a team. So far in this 

competition we placed second 

on the points table at the end of 

the first round which the team is 

very proud of. 

To date we have had sponsorship 

from Leighs Construction 

supplying us with a team set 

of gear bags and Pak n Save 

Moorhouse with the sponsorship 

of thermals for all the girls and 

a donation from Richard and 

Charlotte Lemon. 

Earlier this year the team also 

put on a Ball Gown Parade 

Fundraiser in relation to the 

school formal which was a very 

enjoyable night and was a major 

financial contribution towards this 

tournament. 

The team would like to take 

this opportunity to express our 

gratitude to all of our supporters

When young, John Alexander walked past 

a car yard on his way to school. He would 

admire the Ford Falcons, a vehicle raced 

by Canadian born Australian racing driver, 

Alan Moffat who won the 1971 South Pacific 

Touring Series and 1973 Australian Touring 

Car Championship in a Ford XY Falcon 

GTHO Phase 3. 

John fulfilled his dream when he and 

partner, Fiona McLachlan purchased their 

4-door, 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT saloon a 

number of years ago and recently added 

stickers to replicate Alan Moffat’s racing car. 

John says it handles really well for a 40 

year old car, perhaps because it was built as a 

production race car. This might also explain 

the 351 Cleveland engine that John recently 

rebuilt when there was 67,000 original miles 

on the clock. 

The vehicle has a manual 4-speed gearbox 

and top speed around 130mph. It was built 

in Australia explaining its 36 fuel tank that 

costs close to $300 to fill though lasts about 

500 kilometres. 

Fiona and John enjoy driving their car. 

They have taken it to Taupo, Invercargill 

and Westport and won numerous prizes 

including Best Muscle Car at the Kaikoura 

Hop. It has also featured in the Aussie Street 

Machine magazine. 

John and Fiona’s Ford Falcon will be at the 

Selwyn Motor Fest in November, an event 

they are helping to organise. 

1972 Chevy Nova 

Vince and Kari’s satin silver, 2-door, 1972 

Chevy Nova has been built as a Yenko tribute 

with custom graphics, 355 decals and black 

widened steel wheels to make it stand out in 

the muscle car crowd. With drop spindles 

and adjustable suspension, this Chevy 

Nova has the prefect stance and the motor 

an angry note that lets you know it means 

business. 

The Chevy Nova arrived in New Zealand 

four years ago and was in storage until last 

year when Gareth, the previous owner, 

began restoring it. Vince and Kari saw the 

car at Muscle Car Madness this year. They 

decided they had to own it so made an offer, 

before the car was completed. 

They are not concerned about fuel 

consumption having bought the vehicle 

because they liked its look and sound. It is 

a little different, due to Nova’s being rare in 

New Zealand. 

When restored, the Chevy’s interior 

was found to be minimal and the engine 

mounted in a way that suggested the vehicle 

might have been a prop car in American 

movies, a suspicion that Vince has not yet 

been able to confirm. 

Vince and Kari love to burn fuel and drive 

the tyres off the Nova. 

Their Chevy Nova will be at the Selwyn 

Motor Fest in November, an event Vince is 

helping to organise.

MOTORCARE PROFESSIONALS 

A lifetime love 

of motorcycles 

A passion for motorcycles shared by 

high school friends led to four becoming 

professional racers and Lindsay Williamson 

starting his own motorbike business. 

That was in 1975 and Christchurch 

Motorcycles has been serving motorcycle 

enthusiasts in Christchurch and further 

afield ever since. 

The business was one of the first Harley 

Davidson franchises in New Zealand, 

then in 1995 Lindsay decided to focus 

on importing and trading New Zealand 

second hand Harley Davidson, Victory 

and Indian motorcycles, along with some 

Japanese bikes. 

Five years ago, Christchurch Motorcycles 

moved from Hornby to their current 

premises near Lincoln. They sell 

motorcycles, tyres, batteries and other 

parts, and services customer’s bikes. 

Lindsay believes in providing a high 

level of service. He enjoys the challenge of 

sourcing quality parts that represent good 

value at affordable prices and likes to assist 

customers, advising them on how best to 

keep their machine running smoothly and 

in a safe condition. 

“Whether a customer spends $2 or $2,000, 

it makes no difference,” says Lindsay. 

Lindsay likes the day to day contact with 

those who come into the shop. 

“Our customers are great. I value them 

and their loyalty,” adds Lindsay who advises 

that their customers travel from across 

Canterbury and even further. 

Lindsay’s love of motorcycling includes 

bike racing. Over the years, he has been a 

supporter of BEARS motorcycle racing in 

Canterbury, seeing it as a great discipline 

for young men and women who become 

involved with the sport. He is also proactive 

in lobbying for rights for motorcyclists such 

as more realistic ACC levies on motorbike

Gardening 

Potatoes – the veg for gardens of all sizes

NOT SO many years ago every 

quarter-acre section boasted a 

large potato patch to feed the 

family. 

As a tasty, versatile and affordable 

addition to any meal, it just 

made sense to grow your own. 

But as property sizes shrunk, the 

demand for growing your own 

spuds also diminished. 

Not so any more, we’ve seen a 

big resurgence in home potato 

growing. Gone are the days when 

you were obliged to purchase a 

2kg bag of seed potatoes to get 

your own crop growing. Packs of 

five, 10 or 20 seed potatoes cater 

for all garden sizes. 

Whether you’ve got a small or 

large garden, potatoes are a musthave 

vegetable. Growing potatoes 

is a great way to get children into 

gardening, and nothing beats 

your own home-grown spuds on 

the Christmas table. 

So, where to start? With quality 

certified seed potatoes. Seed potatoes 

look just like regular potatoes 

but are usually smaller, and are 

certified free of disease, so you 

know you’re getting the best start. 

Some of the well known varieties 

are jersey benne, agria and rua. 

The type of potato you choose 

to plant will depend largely on 

what you want to do with it and 

when you want to harvest. 

Seed potatoes fit into three 

categories – early, early-main and 

main crop. Early potatoes are 

ready to harvest early, and really 

need to be harvested early as 

they are not long-term growers. 

They also taste a lot better when 

harvested early – the classic early 

sweet-tasting new potato. 

Early-main crop potatoes can 

be harvested early to get ‘new’ 

potatoes, or can happily be left in 

the ground until the top growth 

dies back and the skins thicken 

up. Harvested later, they are no 

longer ‘new’ potatoes, but larger 

and thicker skinned. 

And main crop potatoes need 

longer in the ground and should 

be left in until the tops die back in 

autumn before harvest. They will 

be larger, thick-skinned and also 

keep well. 

If you want to ensure you’re 

serving home-grown spuds at 

Christmas, plant early potatoes 

such as rocket, swift, jersey benne 

or cliff kidney. These ones can be 

harvested after about 90 days so, 

if planted in September, will be 

ready for Christmas. 

Potatoes also vary in their make 

up. Some are called ‘waxy’ potatoes 

and these are lower in starch 

and hold together much better 

when cooking – they are more 

suitable for salads, boiling and 

casseroles. Others varieties are 

called ‘floury’ potatoes and these 

ones are higher in starch and

ideal for wedges, chips, roasting 

and mashing. The earlier potatoes 

tend to be more the waxy 

types, and the later varieties more 

floury. 

If you’re looking for a general 

purpose potato, try desiree or rua 

– these are suitable for most uses. 

Leave your seed potatoes in a 

light, dry place for a few weeks so 

they can start to shoot. 

When the shoots are approximately 

2cm long they’re ready to 

plant. Before doing so, work in 

some compost to the soil to make 

it more friable and easier for the 

potatoes to grow, as well as easier 

for you to harvest. 

Next, dig a v-shaped trench 

about 15cm deep in your garden 

and place the potatoes in the bottom 

of it – approximately 40cm 

apart. 

You don’t need to fill the trench 

back up at this stage, just cover 

the planted potatoes with at least 

5cm of soil. New spuds hate frost, 

so keep an eye on them and as 

the shoots start to push through, 

cover them a little more each 

week until you have turned your 

trench into a mound of 15-20cm 

in height after six to eight weeks. 

The more growing stem beneath 

the soil, the more opportunity 

for the plant to produce 

potatoes and the bigger your crop. 

To keep diseases away, don’t 

overhead water your potatoes 

excessively. Once planted the 

rain should be enough to keep 

them going until they’re ready for 

harvesting. 

I also recommend covering 

your potato crop with some 

insect-proof netting which will 

keep out the potato-tomato psyllid, 

a small insect that can cause a 

lot of damage. 

The best way to tell if your potatoes 

are ready is to ‘tickle’ a few 

up to check. Get out your trowel 

and loosen the dirt around a few 

of your potato plants, put your 

hand in the soil and gently pull 

out a spud or two to check progress. 

If your potatoes are small, 

cover them up again with dirt and 

leave them to grow.

Emma milburn & JacquElinE morrEn 

Little River Gallery will be presenting works by two artists, Emma Milburn and Jacqueline 

Morren in their new exhibition ‘Mixed Two’ from this Saturday September 2nd. They are 

bringing together different geographical cultures, using different media and materials, 

both with a strong environmental focus from the manmade and natural world. Their work 

is fabricated by using old traditional techniques yet with a contemporary edge. 

Emma Milburn’s paintings depict elements that are influenced by the natural environment 

of remote and isolated South Island wilderness areas and her interaction within this. As a 

Wilderness Search Dog handler and Visual Tracker, Emma is acutely tuned in to analyse 

detail along with the ‘big picture’. 

Colour, shape, shine, shadow, contours,movement and 

texture influence Emma’s abstract painting style. 

”The juxtaposition between my experiences of wilderness, 

and an urban environment of playing and writing music also 

bring an awareness of the interaction between space, time 

and repetition.”

She sets herself a big challenge to sculpt without training or

in the Selwyn District 

Building on a 

corner section 

Corner sites are often overlooked, as 

many people opt for standard sections that 

are perceived as offering more privacy. 

Callum McGhie, Design and Sales 

Consultant for Homes by Maxim, 

suggests corner sections are the unsung 

heroes due to their two open boundaries 

affording more opportunity to capture 

uninterrupted sun into a home as well 

as convenience with multiple points of 

access. 

Jim Painter from First National Real 

Estate supports this view. He says corner 

sections give a home a street presence and 

grander vista. They also allow people who 

enjoy gardening to create an environment 

to share with others. 

While corner sections are no cheaper, 

they can be slower to sell due to buyers 

factoring in the cost of additional fencing 

or hedges to gain privacy and secluded 

areas. 

“Purchasers of corner sections often look 

to make them private whereas these sites 

show off a home’s design and landscaping,” 

advises Jim. 

Smaller corner sites do have their 

supporters, often being popular with 

homebound residents such as the elderly, 

who may enjoy watching the activity in the 

neighbourhood. 

Callum believes the pros of a corner site 

outweigh the cons. 

“Multiple points of access translate to 

more off-street parking, offering a place 

for a boat, caravan or motorhome and 

the opportunity to capture more sun into 

the home which is a real plus,” suggests 

Callum. 

Both Callum and Jim emphasise that 

corner sections on quiet residential streets 

offer lots of potential yet if located on a 

busy street where traffic slows down then 

accelerates when turning the corner, there 

are more challenges. 

Callum who has a background in 

and passion for good design enjoys the 

challenge of creating a plan that fits a 

client’s parameters and while section size 

is a factor generally more privacy from 

neighbouring properties can be achieved 

with a corner site. 

“Many people think their home will 

be on view yet with clever design there’s 

potential for more outdoor living space 

without being aware there’s a street 

nearby,” suggests Callum. 

While subdivision covenants will 

influence what can be done with fencing 

and other aspects of building, Callum says 

a reputable building company will factor 

this in when designing and siting a home 

on a corner section. 

“Standard plans often don’t lend 

themselves to a corner site and a 

collaborative approach is needed in 

achieving a client’s goals,” adds Callum 

who admits to loving the challenge of 

producing a unique design that works for 

each and every given environment. 

Corner sections have potential. Look 

for a building company that will work 

with you so you end up with a design 

that enhances all the benefits of the site, 

maximising privacy, outdoor living space 

and sunshine.
