SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at Tuesday August 29 2017 15 Plucky Ellesmere effort • By Gordon Findlater AN IMPROVED second half effort saw Ellesmere push Metro Black in their under-14 game at Darfield at the weekend, before falling 24-35. The team will now look to get one win over the boys from the city when they play Metro Red on Saturday. After trailing 0-14 at the half-time break at the weekend Ellesmere came firing back into contention with two early second half tries to Seth Bennett and Riley Watson closed the gap to four. Ellesmere and Metro then traded tries, with Caleb Murphy and Kayse Sisikefu both crossing the line. However, a late penalty from Metro sealed the result. Coach Mike Kingston highlighted the efforts of loose forwards Sisikefu and Jake Pluck who both provided quality metres with their dominant ball running. Following Saturday’s game an under-14 Canterbury Country team will be selected from the Ellesmere and North Canterbury under-14 sides. A large Ellesmere contingent is expected in the squad after putting over 100 points on North Canterbury a fortnight ago.
