The school took part in the Ellesmere Speech Competition which was held at Prebbleton School recently. Pupil Daisy was awarded first place for an outstanding speech on brothers in the year 8 category. The speeches had to be between two-and-a-half to 3min with the contestants choosing their topic for a persuasive speech. Twelve other schools competed from the wider Ellesmere region. West Melton year 7 pupil Kaitlyn also took part in the competition and presented a speech on lying. ROLLESTON SCHOOL pupils are getting a buzz out of their newly-donated bee house. A new house for the leafcutter bee was presented to the school by Rolleston New World as part of the 2017 Little Garden Promotion. Pupils are making the most of the spring, planting seeds in their classrooms. Information packs from Rolleston New World said leafcutters are a gentle breed of bees that specialise in pollination. They’re regarded as solitary bees safe around children and there have been no known cases of anaphylaxis in New Zealand as a result of a leafcutter sting. Growing the leafcutter bee population is part of a nationwide initiative with the goal being to reach 15 million bees in five years.
