Schools showcase talent at culture fest<br />

KAPA HAKA groups from<br />

10 schools around the district<br />

travelled to Leeston to perform<br />

in a Maori Cultural festival.<br />

Ellesmere College hosted a Po<br />

Whakangahau on Thursday evening<br />

to celebrate Maori culture.<br />

The festival featured performances<br />

from schools across<br />

the district including Lincoln<br />

Primary School, Springston<br />

School, Prebbleton School and<br />

Southbridge Primary School.<br />

The evening opened with a<br />

whakatau, karakia and waiata<br />

and finished with a karakia<br />

whakamutunga (waiata).<br />

Ellesmere College year 13 student<br />

George Ward said the crowd<br />

packed the school’s Riki Ellison<br />

Memorial Hall.<br />

“This was great to see as it<br />

means the event is getting bigger<br />

and soon we may even have to go<br />

somewhere else to fit everyone<br />

in,” he said.<br />

George said he advises anyone<br />

who wants a great and cheap<br />

night out to put it in their diary<br />

now.<br />
