A THIRD of the $195 million<br />
Southern Motorway upgrade has<br />
been finished.<br />
The Christchurch Southern<br />
Motorway Stage 2 is on target<br />
to be ready by early 2020, which<br />
will see a section of Main South<br />
Rd widened to four lanes and<br />
the project linked up to the<br />
Halswell Junction Rd end of the<br />
motorway.<br />
Work on the major project has<br />
been under way since November<br />
and is set to ramp up as summer<br />
approaches.<br />
The motorway aims to halve<br />
the travel time between Rolleston<br />
and Christchurch from 30 to<br />
about 15min.<br />
Over winter, more than<br />
300,000 cu m of earth was<br />
moved, two new roads built<br />
and the first of eight bridges has<br />
almost been completed.<br />
New roads Tiptree Lane and<br />
Manion Rd are open, along with<br />
construction at Justine Drive<br />
having just begun.<br />
PROGRESS: A new bridge (above) on Main South Rd, north<br />
of Rolleston, is 80 per cent complete. Work continues on the<br />
new motorway extension looking south from Waterholes Rd<br />
to Robinsons Rd with two lanes in each direction and a central<br />
median barrier.<br />
