ELLESMERE COLLEGE celebrated the success of its many talented students at its annual Sporting and Cultural Awards Ceremony last Wednesday. The evening began with a performance of the school’s kapa haka group and was presented by Mark Walton, a clarinettist, saxophonist, composer, arranger and musical educator. The school’s head of arts and music and organiser Alison Wakelin said Mr Walton had an international reputation and it was an honour to have him officiate and play his clarinet. During the evening, student and recipient of the “Cultural Blue” for music award Megan Dunlop sang while student Fylgia Romero gave an emotional rendition of a spoken poem. The evening was led by students with the school’s cultural prefects, Jak Mitchell, Georgia Hague and Waimaria Brown, announcing the cultural awards. The school’s sports prefects Jessica Carter and Beau Luxton also announced the sports awards. The evening concluded with supper provided by the school’s basketball team as a fundraiser for their forthcoming trip to the United States.
