GOOD IDEA: Mayor Sam Broughton is offering to give $10 to any 10-year-old
living in the district with a good idea they want to get off the ground. If you
have an idea, email it in under 200 words to bernadette.ryan@selwyn.govt.nz
Cash offer among
mayor’s initiatives
Mayor Sam Broughton
writes about three
quirky initiatives he
has been working on
to help the creative
minds in Selwyn
Sam
Broughton
Selwyn Mayor
THERE ARE three new
initiatives that I have been
working on with others to
support participation in
our community.
They are 10TEN10, $500
community solution, and
the ‘Largest Pumpkin’
growing competition.
Ten dollars for 10
10-year-olds is a way to
support new ideas that
our young people have.
In my role, I am privileged
to meet lots of great
people who need a helping
hand to get an idea off the
ground.
I know $10 isn’t much
but Selwyn is full of
10-year-olds with entrepreneurial
skills who are
excited about multiplying
those dollars into two or
three times that amount.
Posters and opportunities
for this have been
distributed through our
schools.
The $500 community
solution is about getting a
solution completed.
The district council is
involved in lots of great
projects but, by our
nature, sometimes things
can take a while or cost
more that what might be
expected.
If you’re thinking “why
doesn’t the district council
get onto doing . . . I know
I could do it for $500”,
then I want to hear from
you.
You can email your idea
in under 200 words to
bernadette.ryan@selwyn.
The pumpkin growing
competition is a joint
initiative with our Selwyn
Waihora Zone Committee
chairman Allen Lim.
We want to see who can
grow the biggest pumpkin
this summer.
Mr Lim has grown
a number of seedlings
which are being
distributed to schools and
individuals over the next
week.
Our hope is that this is
also a good opportunity to
talk about the use of water
and nutrients as we grow
food to feed the world.
I’ll be growing
a pumpkin at the
district council offices
in Rolleston over the
summer.
If you are interested in
the above initiatives feel
free to share them or
get in touch to know
more.
