SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday November 15 2017 31 Darfield High come close to ultimate frisbee title • By Andrew King DARFIELD HIGH finished second in the inaugural South Island secondary school ultimate frisbee championships. Competing against five other teams at Centennial Park in Spreydon, Darfield met Cashmere in the final of the compeititon known as the ‘Ultimate Champs’. Shirley Boys’ High, Riccarton High, a combined team and a second team from Darfield were also involved in the competition. Cashmere’s Gordon Forrest was named the most spirited player in the compeititon, Riccarton’s Ben Cruse was the men’s MVP and Darfield’s Stephanie McKenzie was the women’s MVP. Shirley Boys’ High coach Scott Edwards also helped coach the Cashmere side and said it was a fantastic event and great to grow the sport. “In the last two years, the high school scene has grown a lot. There were a lot of parents that came down to watch and all the players hung around to watch the final,” he said. He said with no official tournament in the South Island, it was good to get something like this off the ground to keep up with their North Island counterparts. So what is ultimate frisbee? •Normally, it is played on a 70m x 50m field with seven players on each team. •The goal is to get the frisbee into the opposition’s ‘end zone’ to score a point. •The first team to 13 wins. •Teams can be made up of both men and women. •Each game runs for 45min. •The Ultimate Champs were played with only five-aside, so the field dimensions were shortened to 50m x 20m, with 30min pool games and 45min semis and finals. With the club now on the verge of being New Zealand Football licensed, they felt it was timely to revisit how they represent their philosophy and values. The new badge design aims to capture the local environment, which is represented by the alps and the Selwyn River, both a part the previous badge, while simplifying the colour scheme. The imagery was retained to represent the relationship between the club and local community. The introduction of the horse is a nod to the new and recognises the development of the club SPORTS NEW: Selwyn United have replaced their old club badge (above) with a new design (right). New look, new league for Selwyn football which is now known as the stallions. The horse is symbolic of freedom without restraint, of pace and beauty, and of the instinctive and the controlled. The club felt it captured their football philosophy which is built around playing attacking, free-flowing and passing football. Selwyn’s premier team won this year’s Canterbury championship league to gain promotion into the MPL for the first time in the club’s history. They will also have a chance to qualify for the newly reinstated South Island league, which will feature eight teams – five from the MPL and three from the southern premier league.
