2 Wednesday November 22 2017 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi SELWYN TIMES FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK GOOD ON the district council for taking steps to stop companies illegally taking water from roadside hydrants (see page 1). An eagle eyed resident spotted such a thing and alerted the Selwyn Times last week, and she’s right on the button: Our precious water supply is being tapped into by some thirsty for more profit. Police continue to make inquiries into the brutal attack on a 15-year-old in Rolleston – the one where his head was held under water while others chanted “drown him, drown him”. People have been interviewed and all police are saying at the moment is inquiries are continuing. All complaints have now been dropped against West Melton under-14.5 rugby coach Amanda Tomlinson who got into strife last season (see page 7). Commonsense has prevailed. – Barry Clarke Inside Christmas spirit at Rolleston College SCHOOLS 9 News.........................3-7, 22 Schools.............................8-13 Local Views................... 17 Backyard Critters..........29 Rural Life.................40-41 Gardening............................ 42 Community Events...43 GET IN TOUCH General Inquiries Ph 379-7100 Classified Advertising Ph 379-1100 The Christchurch Star Company Ltd. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday November 22 2017 3 News Complaints dropped against junior rugby coach Police urge her to keep coaching • By Andrew King A WEST Melton rugby coach pulling the pin on helping out her club would be a “real shame,” a police officer said. The under-14.5s coach Amanda Tomlinson (left) was under investigation by police and the Canterbury Rugby Football Union after an altercation on the field with a Lincoln player in July. It was alleged she grabbed the player by his collar after he kicked someone from her team in the mouth during a match. Both investigations have been dropped due to the complaint being withdrawn. PRE-GAME: The West Melton under 15 rugby team, which was coached by Amanda Tomlinson, before the match where the incident happened. ON THE DOMAIN LINCOLN 3 MARCH 2018 Ms Tomlinson said she won’t coach again after the incident and wouldn’t comment further when contacted on Thursday. Senior Sergeant Pete Stills told the Selwyn Times it would be a “real shame” if she let the incident take away from her incredible work in the community. “We think she should carry on. She is a valued member of the community and should continue to coach,” he said. “I would be sad to think she would not continue.” Ellesmere Rugby Union president Stuart Boon said he would not have a problem with her returning to coach. “The penalty has been served . . . she has had a long involvement with rugby and she is very good with the management side of things,” he said.
