SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday December 20 2017 13 Leeston-Southbridge stay at top of table after 96-run win KEY MAN: Dougald Munro claimed three quick wickets to topple the Oxford-Rangiora top order at Southbridge Domain. LEESTON-Southbridge will go into the Christmas break at the top of the country cricket standings after securing a 96-run win over Oxford-Rangiora on Saturday. With big names missing due to Canterbury Country taking on Nelson in the Hawke Cup, it was a round for young players and experienced club stalwarts to come to the fore in the premier one-day competition. Leeston-Southbridge won the toss and piled on 218/7 at Southbridge Domain. Opener Liam O’Sullivan batted well to anchor the innings with 94 off 129 balls. He was well supported by skipper Chris Beatson who made 69 off 99 balls. The pick of the bowlers for Oxford-Rangiora was St Andrew’s College first XI member Mitchell Power who took 4/35 with his right arm medium pace. In reply, Oxford-Rangiora found themselves in strife early on with Dougald Munro, who returned from a two-week vacation in Australia, taking three top-order wickets including the prized scalp of David Fulton for a golden duck. Opener Blake Hansen tried to stick it out and give his team a chance, but fell to the part-time off-spin of Toby Doyle. The Oxford-Rangiora youngsters in the middle-to-lowerorder then couldn’t muster a response and ended 122 all out. Short scorecards: •Leeston-Southbridge 218/7 (L O’Sullivan 94, C Beatson 69; M Power 4/35) beat Oxford- Rangiora 122 (B Hansen 36; D Munro 3/13, A Hooper 3/23, T Doyle 2/1). •Lincoln 190/4 (R Clark 45, A Paterson 45, H Paterson 26; A Laffey 1/17) lost to Sefton 192/6 (T Harrison 79no, C Simpson 23no; M Elliot 2/25). •Southbrook 216 (M Brine 55, A Wise 39, D Power 28, S Carston 3/30) beat Darfield-South Malvern 190 (M Pauling 66, A Inch 48no; M Brine 4/31). •Weedons 173 (T Suyker 50; P Rayner 3/38, BR Rayner 3/22, 3/26) beat Cheviot 119 (B Rayner 40; BN Nightingale 5/15). Point standings: Leeston Southbridge 45pts, 1; Weedons 33pts, 2; Sefton 33pts, 3; Cheviot 27pts, 4; Darfield-South Malvern 27pts, 5; Lincoln 21pts, 6; Southbrook 21pts, 7; Oxford- Rangiora 9pts, 8. • By Gordon Findlater SELWYN United have become the first club in the country to achieve the highest grade in a new programme set up by New Zealand Football. The club achieved ‘quality club mark two’ accreditation. The programme aims to identify, support and highlight football clubs in New Zealand which are well-run, communityfocused organisations. More than 50 clubs across seven different federations currently hold QCM one accreditation. However, Selwyn United has become the first to reach level two. “It’s a wicked indication of the brilliant work they’ve been doing at Selwyn,” said Mainland Football community football manager Martin Dodgson. “When you put together really good planning with some very dedicated people to execute that plan and a high demand for football, you get the perfect recipe for a high performing club.” QCM assesses a number of factors on and off the field SPORTS Selwyn Utd first in the country to gain top endorsement across the following criteria: Club administration and leadership, planning and finance, compliance, volunteers, referee development, player development, coach development, and community engagement. New Zealand Football supports QCM clubs with logos for their websites, letters of support for fundraising and gaming trust funding applications. “They should be proud because it’s not an easy bar to reach and they’ve set a great example,” said New Zealand Football community development manager Jamie Milne. Selwyn United was formed with the merger of the Rolleston and Ellesmere football clubs in 2012. The club recently gained promotion to the Mainland Premier League after winning the Canterbury championship league. Selwyn United will also have a chance to qualify for the newly reformed South Island league. The top five teams after two rounds of the MPL will qualify for the SIL, along with the top three clubs from the southern premier league. Attention water consent holders National regulations require all water consents of 5 litres/second or more to have a water measuring device. If you haven’t already got a water measuring device, you’ll need to have one installed this season by an approved supplier (find a list of suppliers at www.irrigationnz.co.nz) A water measuring system can help you save time and money and the data is critical to understanding the region’s water resources and ensuring it is being used efficiently.
