2 SELWYN TIMES [Edition datE] Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday December 20 2017 19 PETS & PAWS Tips for a happy pet Emotions often govern the decision to get a pet and every year, unwanted animals are left at the SPCA because that cute puppy has grown into a hungry demanding dog or owners shift location and cannot take the pet. Whether a cat, dog, guinea pig, bird, tropical fish or some other animal, shelve the sentiment for a moment and consider whether you have the time, room or budget for a pet. Pets need looking after and dogs are top of the list. If you truly want a pet, you will be repaid with love. Taking on a pet requires commitment. Dogs need exercising, which is great if you do. Your trusty friend will have you out walking or jogging off the excesses of Christmas, helping you keep fit throughout the year. Kittens, puppies and dogs all need to be entertained so if you have a pet or one is expected on Christmas Day, add a few items under the Christmas tree. Avoid chocolate as it is potent for dogs. Small amounts upset their stomachs and larger quantities can cause serious health issues like heart problems. Your dog will be delighted with a bone, toy or specially made dog biscuit. Your feline friend will love a small ball, feathers, tunnel, scratching post and even a cardboard box. Dogs need lots of toys to keep them entertained, something that will please the neighbours. Ideal are: • Balls to chase and play ‘doggy soccer’ with. • Catnip filled stuffed toys – dogs just love them. • Stuffed toys – some dogs chew them to pieces. • Kongs filled with kibble and sealed with a little unsweetened peanut butter for a healthy doggy treat. (Note: some artificial sweeteners are poisonous for dogs.) • Squeaky toys. • Toy bones or better still, a real bone. Remember too, that on hot days it is better to take your dog out for a walk when the day cools to avoid dehydration and the potential for their paws to be burnt by a hot pavement. Of course, always supervise young children around dogs, especially when they are eating or sleeping. If heading away, organise a sitter for your pet, if not booked into a cattery or dog kennel and if taking your dog with you, check the place you intend to stay will accept pets. Some camping grounds or holiday home owners are happy for pets to stay while many others are not. If staying with friends or family, ensure they are happy with your plan to bring that extra treasured member of the household. Be a responsible traveller, if you pet is accompanying you, observe times when dogs are allowed on the beach and do not take your pet onto DOC land, even on a leash. The myth that a loved dog or cat would not attack native birds is just that, a myth. Respect our endemic species rather than further threaten their survival.
