A FEEL-GOOD pop choir that<br />
emerged after the earthquakes<br />
is now going international.<br />
Fifty members from the<br />
Christchurch Pops Choir will<br />
perform in Hanian, China,<br />
at the Hanian (21st Century<br />
Maritime Silk Road) Choir<br />
Festival.<br />
<strong>The</strong> choir was invited to<br />
perform as a guest act at the<br />
opening ceremony to be held<br />
on Saturday. <strong>The</strong> event is held<br />
every two years and more than<br />
300 choirs will compete in<br />
China.<br />
Christchurch Airport is the<br />
main sponsor of the choir.<br />
In 2015, when Christchurch<br />
Airport celebrated its new<br />
service with China<br />
Southern Airlines – a<br />
direct connection<br />
flight between<br />
mainland China<br />
and<br />

performed to passengers and<br />
officials after the first flight<br />
landed in Christchurch.<br />
A gala dinner followed with<br />
VIP guests from New Zealand<br />
and China at which the choir<br />
performed a song in mandarin,<br />
which was met with applause<br />
and cheers from guests.<br />
“<strong>The</strong> Chinese guests were<br />
overwhelmed<br />
and thrilled,” said Christchurch<br />
Airport spokeswoman<br />

<strong>The</strong> choir was then recommended<br />
by China Southern<br />
Airlines to the festival’s officials<br />
and it was suggested<br />
they be invited to perform as<br />
a guest.<br />

“It was simply a way to support<br />
one another, make joyous<br />
music and have a place to sing<br />
each week as we all started to<br />
recover,” said current director<br />
Ravil Atlas.<br />
<strong>The</strong> choir sings ‘popular’<br />
songs with the goal of raising<br />
the spirits of members and the<br />
people of Canterbury.<br />
A wide range of genres are<br />
covered, such as pop, rock,<br />
jazz, musical theatre, swing<br />
