“Be still”
This month sees the start of our Season of
Prayer. An important opportunity to
gather on a number of occasions, as a
Church family, across six weeks, to listen
to God.
We’ve done our best to declutter the diary
and strip back a lot of the usual
programmes, so that we can each make
these corporate prayer gatherings a
priority.
In a world where we are often crazily busy,
running fast while spinning plates, the
space to properly engage with God gets
squeezed.
My hope is that as we press the pause
button, we can experience what it means
to “Be still..” (Psalm 46:10). The original
context for that statement is of a world in
turmoil and at war. So the literal meaning
of “be still” is, “lay down your weapons”.
Maybe that’s part of what we need to do
during this season of listening to God. As
individuals and as a Church Community,
we surrender to God all those questions,
struggles, and battles which churn us up
on the inside or come at us from the
outside. In that transforming encounter,
to be still is to hand all the issues over to
God in an act of trust, so that in the end
He is the only one we are holding onto.
I can’t emphasise enough how significant
such seasons are in nurturing spiritual
health among us.
But this month also contains two other
important features. One is the beginning
of a process to appoint an Associate
Minister on staff by the Autumn. His
name is Mike Smailes and he will preach
on February 4 th am and visit us again with
his wife Sandie for a few days during the
half term holiday, when we will have an
opportunity mid-week on February 15 th
to hear from him informally.
Half term is also the time when the
Church at Woodbury Avenue will be
turned into a building site for The Big
Build Holiday Club. It’s going to be an
exciting outreach to primary school aged
children. Feel free to invite those you
know. Please see sign up information in
the ‘Big Build’ article in this publication.
So as we stop, reflect and pray during this
season, let’s offer to God the entire life of
the Church. From our mission to proclaim
the good news, to our pastoral care, staff
development and discipleship. There is
nothing too big or small to pray about.

Gathering PACE...
Opening the Bible to the next
generation in Bournemouth
and beyond…
The Lord first led me into
Schools Ministry in 1993 during
my time at Bible College. Since
then, wherever I have been
working over the past 25 years
I have found myself in schools,
and the last few months have
been no exception. As I have
approached a number of
Bournemouth schools they have
welcomed me in with open arms
and ears!
I aim to be involved in as many
primary schools as possible in
the BH postcode area: taking
assemblies, teaching lessons,
and encouraging churches to
serve their local schools in
creative ways. If you have
children, grandchildren,
nephews or nieces locally
- I hope to see them and tell
them timeless stories from
God’s Word in an engaging way.
So, I am stepping out in faith,
working with the PACE Trust,
but raising my own support in
order to make this possible.
Well, in fact, it is God who will
make all this possible - through
the prayers and generous giving
of His people.

Anyone who attended the
Church Forum at the end of
2017 will know that this year
has the potential to be a very
significant season for
Lansdowne. We face a number
of important questions that are
yet to be answered. How can we
most effectively reach our local
area? How can we connect
more with the BH1 community
during this period? What is God
trying to teach us through the
hold-ups to the building
project? How should we
develop our staff team this
year?
As well as these, we are called
to keep growing as followers of
Jesus, both individually and
corporately. We remember our
commission to make disciples
of every nation. But where do
we begin?
During Lent 2018, we’re going
to be stripping things back,
turning the volume down, and
giving ourselves the space to
listen to God. This will mean
that many of our regular
groups and activities will pause
during this season, so we can
gather each week to pray as a
church.
Even if you don’t regularly
manage to attend our monthly
prayer gatherings, we hope
you’ll be able to prioritise this
season, as we bring our
questions to God.
Our motto text for 2018 says,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”
Our prayer is that we’d be a
church that is prepared to
listen to God and ready to
follow where he leads.”

During February Half Term Lansdowne
Church Woodbury Avenue is being
transformed into a Lego building site.
Between Tuesday 13 th – Friday 16 th
February primary school aged children
can become builders and join us as we
explore the character of God through the
lives of Noah and Jesus, with plenty of
the usual singing, games and crafts.
We’ll also be celebrating the week
together on Sunday 18 th at 11.15am and
we’d love to invite everyone to join us.

Six reasons [excuses?] why you should NOT bother
to come on Saturday 24 February

1. It will be a dark winter’s evening

3. You’ve had a hard week
4. You do not want to move out of your ‘comfort zone’
5. You do not want to hear of a spiritual awakening
6. You’re afraid you might be challenged
How sad if these reasons prevented you from hearing from Dennis and Sheila Eaton on
a very significant movement of God’s Spirit in one of the most deprived areas in Malawi.
They returned home last October with many heart-warming and heart-breaking stories
to share with us. Don’t miss out on being encouraged by what God is doing in one of the
poorest countries in the world.
See you there – 7.30 pm in the main church. The evening will conclude
with tea, coffee and biscuits.

Care Homes Ministry! We currently need more volunteers for the monthly services at
Queensmount, on the second Sunday at 2:15pm, Knyveton Hall on the 2 nd Sunday at
3.00pm and the Evergreens on the 4 th Sunday at 3pm. We need team leaders, pianists
and team members in order to keep these services running. Please speak to John and
Rebecca Osborne, or feel free to come along to any of the services. We also value your
prayers for this ministry.
