They form a diamond shape that allows natural<br />
angles of support, as well as numbers<br />
up on <strong>the</strong> central attacker. (Fig2)<br />
The goalkeeper is a key position for a team<br />
that <strong>build</strong>s <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong>. <strong>Players</strong> in this role<br />
must be technically as good as any outfield<br />
<strong>play</strong>er, comfortable with <strong>the</strong>ir feet, and at<br />
this stage, <strong>the</strong>y should follow <strong>the</strong> same technical<br />
training of an outfield <strong>play</strong>er.<br />
Fig 2<br />
The position of <strong>the</strong> two central defenders<br />
should not be <strong>to</strong>o far <strong>from</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r, as it<br />
is difficult for <strong>play</strong>ers at this stage <strong>to</strong> have<br />
great passing and controlling accuracy of<br />
over long distances.<br />
The central midfielder should form a triangle<br />
with <strong>the</strong> two defenders, and be in a position<br />
<strong>to</strong> provide an advanced passing option.<br />
Note: When <strong>the</strong> goalkeeper is in possession,<br />
<strong>the</strong> ball should always be passed <strong>to</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />
one of <strong>the</strong> central defenders unless marked.<br />
The wide <strong>build</strong> up chains include one central<br />
defender, a wide <strong>play</strong>er, <strong>the</strong> midfielder, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> central striker which will move <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
side of <strong>the</strong> ball (are you talking about <strong>the</strong><br />
central striker or <strong>the</strong> <strong>build</strong> up chains? It is<br />
unclear). They form a diamond shape with<br />
two natural triangles. Advancing <strong>the</strong> ball is<br />
always <strong>the</strong> priority but must be done in a<br />
safe matter. Through training, <strong>play</strong>ers must<br />
learn <strong>to</strong> recognize <strong>the</strong> various situations and<br />
choose <strong>the</strong> best available option <strong>to</strong> safely<br />
advance <strong>the</strong> ball. <strong>How</strong>ever, when this is not<br />
possible, retaining possession is a priority. In<br />
Fig 3<br />
Fig 3, <strong>the</strong> central defender has no viable safe<br />
passing options, but can use <strong>the</strong> goalkeeper<br />
or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r central defender as <strong>the</strong> "out<br />
<strong>play</strong>ers” <strong>to</strong> come out safely <strong>from</strong> a pressured<br />
situation.<br />
The last <strong>build</strong> up chain, occurs in central areas<br />
with <strong>the</strong> central midfielder in possession<br />
of <strong>the</strong> ball. Two wide <strong>play</strong>ers, and <strong>the</strong> central<br />
striker, and <strong>the</strong> central midfielder form<br />
an advanced diamond shape that moves <strong>the</strong><br />
team’s <strong>build</strong> up through <strong>the</strong> midfield areas<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> final 3rd of <strong>the</strong> field. The two central<br />
defenders take a <strong>back</strong> position of support as<br />
“out <strong>play</strong>ers,” an option that must be always<br />
