Breaking The Second Line<br />
When <strong>build</strong>ing <strong>play</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong>, <strong>the</strong> objective<br />
is <strong>to</strong> advance <strong>the</strong> ball <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> midfield area<br />
in possession and <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong>re, move <strong>the</strong> ball<br />
<strong>to</strong> more dangerous areas <strong>to</strong> penetrate.<br />
Keeping possession is always key. The ball<br />
must be moved safely <strong>to</strong> areas with less <strong>play</strong>ers<br />
and more space available.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> illustration below, (Fig 13) with 8 in<br />
possession of <strong>the</strong> ball, <strong>the</strong>re are several options<br />
<strong>to</strong> advance <strong>the</strong> ball.<br />
8 can use a short lateral pass <strong>to</strong> 10 <strong>to</strong> move<br />
<strong>the</strong> ball <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong> field, or use 7<br />
or 11 <strong>to</strong> penetrate laterally, or advance centrally<br />
with a more direct pass <strong>to</strong> feet for <strong>the</strong><br />
central striker 9.<br />
If under pressure and with no forward options<br />
available, 8 can always pass <strong>back</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ball <strong>to</strong> any of <strong>the</strong> three defenders, in order <strong>to</strong><br />
keep possession and move it <strong>to</strong> different areas<br />
of <strong>the</strong> field.<br />
