Superette is celebrating its 15th birthday this year,<br />
after owners, James Rigden and Rickie Dee, opened<br />
the first store in 2002. The company now has five<br />
stores plus a very successful online business. We<br />
are so happy to now have a Superette store in the<br />
central city and are loving the new winter arrivals<br />
from Bassike, Anine Bing, Zimmermann and Camilla<br />
and Marc.

With Superette’s 15th birthday<br />
celebration this month, Victoria<br />
Tait speaks with part-owner and<br />
founder Rickie Dee about the<br />
inspiration for the store and what<br />
inspires her this season.<br />
What was the initial concept behind Superette?<br />
At the age of 21, both James [Rigden] and I wanted to work<br />
for ourselves and do something we had a passion for. This was<br />
fashion, and that's where the idea of opening our very first store<br />
came from. We wanted Superette to be not just a store with<br />
racks down each side, but rather an experience and a space that<br />
would inspire our customers. Everything that we buy in the store<br />
must be something that we personally love and want ourselves.<br />
What would you say has been your biggest highlight<br />
over the past 15 years?<br />
• Each of the five stores we have opened.<br />
• Working with amazing people each and every day.<br />
• The launch of our Superette in-house brand.<br />
• The introduction of homewares to our store concepts four<br />
years ago.<br />
• Launching our online store in 2013.<br />
What are the must-have items in store this season?<br />
Too many to name… but my most recent purchases are:<br />
Senso Tyra heel, Camilla & Marc Sterling Blazer in khaki,<br />
Bassike French Seam T in white, Victoria & Woods Sterling Faux<br />

How would you describe your own style?<br />
I do have three kids, so I like to be comfortable, and I'm not super<br />
girlie. In saying that I will rough up a long maxi skirt with a leather<br />
biker jacket or a blazer with ripped denim jeans. I do like to dress<br />
up, and it is important in the business we are in.<br />
What’s inspiring you right now?<br />
I'm inspired every day by my team. Our office space, our<br />
designer’s collections, travel and, of course, magazines and blogs. I<br />
pick up inspiration from everything around me.<br />

From the little black<br />
dress to the Burberry<br />
trenchcoat, these iconic<br />
fashion items have stood<br />
the test of time.<br />

1. chanel 2.55<br />
In 1955, Coco Chanel was to change<br />
fashion history with the introduction<br />
of the Chanel 2.55. Tired of carrying<br />
handbags and inspired by the bags used<br />
by soldiers, Coco Chanel added a long<br />
strap that enabled the practical 2.55<br />
to be worn over the shoulder. It was<br />
an immediate success. In the first year,<br />
the Chanel fashion house had to refuse<br />
orders because of the high demand.<br />
This changing moment in fashion<br />
history made it acceptable for upperclass<br />
women to carry a bag on their<br />
shoulders.<br />
2.<br />
2. Dior Ballet skirt<br />
After WWII, fashion yearned for<br />
something more frivolous, colourful and<br />
playful. Christian Dior presented just<br />
that with the voluminous ballet skirt.<br />
The iconic shape he represented was<br />
called the ‘New Look’. Today the ballet<br />
or full skirt is still popular and is often<br />
combined with an edgy leather jacket.
3. Louboutins<br />
Christian Louboutin’s red soles were<br />
inspired by his assistant. The story<br />
goes that she was painting her nails<br />
in a bright-red colour, Louboutin<br />
took the nailpolish and began to<br />
paint the sole of the shoes. And so<br />
the bright red became the signature<br />
colour of Louboutin. The now-famous<br />
Louboutins are worn by many famous<br />
designers and celebrities.<br />
4. YsL smoking Jacket<br />
At the height of the feminist movement<br />
Yves Saint Laurent introduced the ‘Le<br />
Smoking’ – the first tuxedo for women.<br />
The 1966 design was a turning point,<br />
allowing women to be feminine and<br />
masculine all at once. It was the first<br />
time women could wear a smoking<br />
jacket to dinner and other events, too.<br />
5. hermès Birkin<br />
In the ’80s, Jane Birkin was seated<br />
next to Jean-Louis Dumas, the CEO<br />
of Hermès, on her flight from Paris to<br />
London. Jane was complaining that she<br />
never found the perfect weekend bag.<br />
Shortly after their meet-up, Jane Birkin<br />
received her personalised bag with a<br />
note. From that moment on, the Birkin<br />
became the most-recognised luxury<br />
handbag in the world, now selling<br />
for anywhere between $10,000 and<br />
$200,000.<br />
6. DvF Wrap Dress<br />
Launched in 1972, Diane von<br />
Fürstenberg’s classic jersey wrap dress<br />
became an instant classic. The designer<br />
explains the success of this cult classic<br />
item perfectly: “Clothes have to<br />
reflect women’s liberation. Women<br />
today want versatile, simple, classic,<br />
comfortable, slimming clothes. This is<br />
the story of my success.”<br />

hKD$1.72 million<br />
(nZD$314,500).<br />

7. The chanel suit<br />
Chanel’s most iconic item almost<br />
never was. In 1923, Coco Chanel<br />
invited journalists to preview her new<br />
collection – and the Chanel suit barely<br />
even got a mention in the press reviews.<br />
It wasn’t until after WWII, when Coco<br />
reintroduced the suit, that it became a<br />
huge success.<br />

8. Burberry Trenchcoat<br />
Famously worn by British officers in<br />
WWI, the Burberry trenchcoat was<br />
designed to withstand harsh weather<br />
conditions. The D-shaped belt ring was<br />
used for attaching small items such as<br />
maps. Later the coat was modified and<br />
now is the brand’s most recognisable<br />
item.<br />
9. calvin Klein slip Dress<br />
In the 1990s, Calvin Klein gave the little<br />
black dress a makeover... by turning<br />
it into a casual-looking nightie. Made<br />
famous by Kate Moss, the slip dress<br />
was in the style of a petticoat and<br />
traditionally cut on the bias, with thin<br />
straps. Today, the dress has made a<br />
big comeback in what’s known as ‘the<br />
pyjama trend’.<br />
10. The Little Black Dress<br />
Before the 1920s, women used to<br />
wear black only while mourning. It was<br />
considered distasteful to wear it on any<br />
other occasion. One woman changed<br />
this view forever. Coco Chanel’s little<br />
black dress design graced the pages<br />
of Vogue in 1926, when the magazine<br />
published a sketch of the dress.<br />
Decades later, when Audrey Hepburn<br />
wore a Chanel dress in Breakfast at<br />
Tiffany’s (1961), the fate of the cult item<br />
– as a true wardrobe essential – was<br />
sealed.<br />

about what’s currently on trend.<br />
What is the most fashionable treatment at the<br />
moment?<br />
Trends do come and go in cosmetic medicine, however,<br />
the treatments I am most often called on to provide<br />
remain Botulinum Toxin (such as Botox® and Dysport®),<br />
and dermal fillers. Pleasingly, the glamorised, American,<br />
more “in your face” approach hasn’t taken on in New<br />
Zealand, where we aim for a far more natural look, with<br />
treatments tailored to the individual and focusing on<br />
replacing volume and definition in the face, which is often<br />
depleted as we age.<br />
My younger clients are favouring lip enhancement, yet<br />
still opting for a “less is more” approach.<br />
Can you explain the procedures?<br />
Each procedure is dictated by the age and individual<br />
needs of the client. It is a collaborative approach where I<br />
work with each client to address their specific concerns<br />
and work out a cost-effective plan. The aim is to achieve<br />
a natural, healthy look. This may involve injecting fillers,<br />
for example, into the cheeks to restore mid-face volume,<br />
or enhancing the lips to improve definition and volume<br />
where required.<br />
Botulinum treatments involve injecting small amounts to<br />
relax over-dynamic muscles, usually in the frown, forehead<br />
and crow’s feet area. This softens and, in time, corrects<br />
fixed deep lines.<br />
What results will this achieve?<br />
The aim is always to achieve a refreshed, healthy and<br />
natural look. A “good for your years” appearance. In<br />
addition to the injectable treatments we advise on skin<br />
care and provide other services that work on hydrating<br />
and rejuvenating the skin.<br />
What’s a common myth surrounding cosmetic<br />
treatments?<br />
There are two that spring to mind. Firstly, that “Botox is a<br />
poison”. In fact it is extraordinarily safe and used in many<br />
fields of medicine. The doses used in cosmetic treatments<br />
are tiny.<br />
The second is due to the American TV media’s poor<br />
portrayal of aesthetic medicine, constantly showing over<br />
treatments and “botched” disasters. Pleasingly, in this<br />
country, clients and practitioners alike seek a natural look<br />
and such poor outcomes are rare.<br />

How did your business partnership come about?<br />
Tracy: We met while Natalie was working as an Environ<br />
educator, just after I had taken over ownership of All<br />
About You, mid-2016. We soon realised we both had<br />
strong holistic views around the beauty industry. We<br />
knew that beauty didn’t just come from quick fixes with<br />
machinery, and our passion was to offer clients a slow –<br />
but consistent – beauty approach, while still being able<br />
to offer cutting-edge technology and the latest scientific<br />
developments. All this in a beautiful, relaxing environment<br />
that deliver results.<br />
What strengths do you each bring to the business?<br />
Tracy: Natalie is a holistic practitioner who has more<br />
than 15 years’ experience in the skincare and wellness<br />
industry. She is a skin-health educator, has a passion for<br />
treating the course of skin conditions from the inside out,<br />
and she is currently training to become a naturopath.<br />
Natalie: Tracy is the driving force behind All About<br />
You. She likes to introduce new and innovative ways for<br />
women to be able to experience our treatments. She<br />
believes skin health should be available to all women.<br />
Tracy is committed to providing an amazing experience<br />
for all our clients plus she is a highly-skilled IPL technician.<br />

What is your most popular treatment and why?<br />
