CHAMPIONSHIP ENGINE BUILDER,
CAR OWNER ROBERT YATES HONORED
BY THE SPORT HE LOVED
Robert Yates showed up at the
NASCAR Hall of Fame that late
afternoon last May genuinely not
knowing if this would be the year
– if that would be the day – he heard his
name called as part of the official unveiling
of the five-person 2017 Hall of Fame induction
class.
Already months into his valiant fight
against liver cancer, Yates walked into the
Grand Hall
and was
immediately
surrounded
by longtime
friends and
greeted fondly
by supporters
and
race fans,
all who had
gathered for
the historical
announcement.
Three
times previously the NASCAR champion
engine builder and team owner had been
nominated for induction. So when his name
was announced as part of the 2017 group
of honorees, the room erupted in joy and
tears.
“I believe that was the fourth year he
was on the ballot so we weren’t sure how it
would go, just praying he would get voted
in to the Hall of Fame,’’ Yates’ son Doug
recalled. “He was so happy. He gave up his
life for this sport. That was his choice but
that was what it takes to be great at something
and he did that. And he wouldn’t tell
you that, but I will.
“It was the most gratifying moment of his
whole career.”
And that is saying a lot.
The man who had built so many strong
engines, may have been weaker of body
but the same spirit and contagious positive
energy he brought to the race track permeated
through the crowd that day – it was
easy to see the special extra something
that makes Yates a stock car legend.
Sadly, Yates died five months later on
Oct. 2 at the age of 74. His family will take
part in the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction
ceremony in honor of this very honorable
man.
Yates contributions to NASCAR are
diverse and significant.
And lasting.
He started his
career as an engine
builder in the late
1960s under the
tutelage of Waddell
Wilson and ultimately
fellow NASCAR
Hall of Famer Junior
Johnson.
He was the chief engine builder for
Hall of Famer Bobby Allison’s 1983 Cup
championship team and built the engines
that Hall of Famer Richard Petty drove to
his final two victories – record 199th and
200th wins.
Following his time under the hood, Yates
moved into a team ownership role and
fielded the iconic No. 28 Texaco/Havoline
car driven by the late Davey Allison and
18 // TJS 2018
NEWS
also the No. 88 Ford that Hall of Famer
Dale Jarrett drove to the 1999 Cup championship.
Allison produced Yates’ first win
as an owner in 1989 at Talladega Superspeedway
and Jarrett secured the beloved
owner his last Cup trophy in 2005, also at
Talladega.
Ernie Irvan, Hall of Famer Ricky Rudd
and Elliott Sadler also won premier series
races driving for Yates, who collected 57
Cup trophies as an owner including three
Daytona 500 wins earned by Davey Allison
(1992) and Jarrett (1996 and 2000).
His inclusion in the Hall of Fame seems
a proper and fitting way to wrap up and
recognize decades of hard work and high
expectation. What a career Robert Yates
made.
CHASE ELLIOTT EXCITED ABOUT NO. 9 AND
BUILDING ON GREAT PLAYOFFS RUN
Chase Elliott’s new car number may not
make him go faster, but it does mean a lot
to him to carry his father Bill Elliott’s No. 9
on his Hendrick Motorsports Camaro.
He likes the look of the Camaro and
the No. 9 on it. And that has always been
his favorite number. But while the change
means a lot to him, Elliott does not expect
it to change his performance.
“I’m very lucky and honored to carry the
number that I’ve carried for a number of
years before this year, so it’s like getting
back home to me from that sense,” Elliott
said during a break in the test session
Tuesday at Texas Motor Speedway. “But
no, I don’t think it’s going to make me go
any faster or slower. I wish it did make us
go faster. I would love that, but unfortunately
numbers don’t.”
But maybe he doesn’t need that much
of a boost anyway. In his second season at
Hendrick and paired with crew chief Alan
Gustafson, Elliott’s top-five finishes, top-10
finishes, laps led, average starting position
and average finish all improved.
Elliott qualified for the NASCAR Playoffs,
and really put on a show in the postseason,
piling up four runner-up finishes, and finishing
in the top 10 in seven of the 10 races.
Just missing a spot in the Championship 4,
Elliott finished fifth in the final 2017 standings.
“I was very proud of our team and the
way we ran in the final 10 weeks last year,”
Elliott said. “I know it didn’t end like we
wanted it to. We had the pace to be there
and to have a shot at Homestead and
we didn’t, but we had the pace to do it
throughout those 10 weeks and I think that
is something to be proud of.
“We had the pit stops to do it, we had
the race strategy calls to do it. I think I can
do it and excited to give it another shot this
year.”
COVENANT TRANSPORT LAUNCHES
FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND $40,000 TEAMING BONUS
Big pay increases are atop Covenant
Transport’s New Year’s resolutions
list, as company officials launch the
expedited freight specialist’s $40,000 Teaming
Bonus program aimed at teams and single drivers
willing to convert to teaming.
The new program – which goes into effect
Feb. 1 – pays $2,000 in bonus money to driving
teams every time a team eclipses 60,000 paid
miles together. The team drivers will receive
$1,000 each, up to a total combined $40,000,
or $20,000 each.
The bonus program comes as Covenant
aims to grow its team truck count from its 2017
approximate average of 980 in
the face of expected demand
for team capacity in 2018, and
sends a strong message to both
existing and potential driving teams: we want
you here.
“We have team freight,” said David Parker,
founder and CEO of Covenant Transport Services.
“That’s important to note, because a lot
of carriers bring on team drivers and put them
on solo lanes.”
Parker, who founded Covenant Transport 32
years ago as a team carrier with wife Jacqueline,
said “one of the most frustrating things for
a team is being underutilized. Teams want long
lengths of haul, and that’s what we are focused
on giving them,” he said.
Joey Hogan, president of Covenant Transport
Services, said in an increasingly-competitive
labor market, the new bonus program also
solidifies Covenant’s place among top driver
employers.
“Rewarding people for doing the work you
ask them to do is what attracts and retains
the type of drivers you are looking for,” Hogan
said. “We feel our new teaming bonus will be
a great reward for our team drivers who go out
and run.”
Hogan said throughout
2017, Covenant felt growing
competition for team drivers,
“so we knew we had to start
off the year
by putting
our stamp
on what we
specialize in, and that’s teaming. “We’re excited
to offer these bonuses to our current team drivers,”
he said, “and look forward to welcoming
many new team drivers in 2018.”
To be eligible for the new $40,000 Teaming
Bonus, new drivers are not required to bring a
team partner to Covenant. The company’s team
matching program will match single drivers in
search of driving partners, and following orientation,
newly-formed teams are immediately
eligible to begin earning under the $40,000
Teaming Bonus program.
