Simple to use, with no programming required, these electric cylinders just require one digital output for on – off control. According to SMC’s UK marketing manager Bob Hitner, these new electric stopper cylinders have been developed in response to changing market conditions and they are ideal when you don’t have a compressor or compressed air supply and you want to use a conveyor line. “Simply plug the dual pinned M12 connector into an ASI unit or PLC and you’re off and, with only 5 watt power consumption, they are super economic to run,” he says. Sick UK says it has set new standards in the use of multiple light beams to safeguard the area surrounding hazardous machinery with the launch of the deTem Core family of safety light curtains for applications up to SIL3/PL ‘e’ (Type 4). The deTem2 Core and deTem4 Core multi-beam range complement the company’s popular deTec4 and deTec2 light curtain range. Designed for lighter transfer weight up to 70 kg with maximum object speeds of 30 metres a minute, these cylinders are both easy to maintain being adjustment free although the drag value is still changeable. For those heavyweight stopper requirements SMC’s series LEBH-X3 can be used. Available in three model size options, these stoppers can handle transferred objects up to 400 kg, 520 kg and 800 kg depending on the selected model with maximum object transfer speeds of 40 metres a minute. Series LEBH-X3 has been designed with an adjustable shock absorber plus soft stop capabilities and the drag value can be quickly changed using a simple dial. Sharing the same roller material options as its smaller model – resin or carbon steel – the roller direction for the LEBH-X3 can be changed in 90 degree steps to ensure maximum flexibility. With the same output as a more expensive servo drive, this makes the new LeanMotor a robust and cost effective option for those looking for higher performance at a lower cost, says the company. More rugged than a synchronous motor and delivering better performance than an asynchronous motor, it exceeds the IE4 efficiency level in its respective performance group. Its fan-less construction with integral holding brake means it is smaller than comparable drives and, with a single power connection, it is very easy to fit. What’s more, its robust construction means that the LeanMotor can be used for dynamic automation tasks in harsh production environments. It also allows for variable regulation of speed and torque from a standstill to maximum speed with full torque control, without the need for positional sensor elements. And being small and light, engineers can design more compact machines, while users benefit from lower energy consumption and long service life. “Specification of the LeanMotor also means the need to use heavier and larger asynchronous motors is eliminated, with the smaller size and lower weight combination providing about 30% gains in cost-efficiency,” says Martin Preece of Stober UK.
